Sheera was right about the teeth blackening! Ohaguro isn’t specific just to Japan, but several other countries iirc. It was a status symbol (tied to beauty trends), but started to die down around 1911. It was used by both men and women, though only men of high power would do it. iirc this is set in the Edo period (1603-1867), so this just a stellar attention to detail on the creators’ part.

Didn't see this mentioned before, but the sword broke because of unsteady heat - when Mizu bound her chest, it hurt, which caused her to operate the bellows without the ideal regulation. The uneven heat affected how the sword was forged.

So around halfway through, when mizu was making the assassins sword. Lupa asked if the guy cut mizu during the sparring. Most likely it was the binding Mizu did for her chest with the bandages. Nowadays binders shouldn't be worn for more then 8 hours or maybe 12 since it can hurt ribs. Her using just straight up bandages and doing blacksmith work wouldn't bode well so it was likely due to improper binding.

I was a bit on the fence whether Mizu was a woman or a man on that 1st episode, since androgynous characters are fairly common in manga and anime, so it really could have gone either way and it would have worked … on that last fight, it’s genius, because nobody had to “explain” why she jumped down the cliff, but it was a way to not be surrounded and overwhelmed by the Four Fangs, and they had no choice but to fight her one by one on the cliff’s wall.
