If you do the peaceful route, the mistwatch bandits become non-hostile and you can even sleep and save stuff in the forts chests

It's an unmarked quest, but when traveling, one of the random encounters can indicate the location (even if you're very far from there, like in Haafingar in exemple): a female NPC, clothed as prisoneers, runs to you, saying she was retained, jailed by bandits and managed to escape. She asks you the direction to the closest town. And she marks the location on your map, saying that these bandits should be taken care of. No quest is given, but you have then the location on your map.
