I've actually been to Paisley - it was 20 odd years ago for a retirement bash so I didn't see much beyond the pub and the restaurant. It proves my theory about places anywhere in the UK. All "nice" places have rubbish bits and all drab places have interesting nice bits. Classic example in Greater Manchester is Rochdale - not the prettiest town but it has a stunning Victorian Town Hall and is surrounded by glorious countryside. Really like these videos.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video 😊. Yea, I agree. Everywhere does tend to have its nice bits or bad bits irrespective of whether it's classed as a nice area or not.

I last went to Paisley in 2017 when it was drizzling and I was riding around on my bicycle. The view you get as you emerge from Gilmour Street railway station is quite impressive, as the video showed. I went to the Museum and Art Gallery to get out of the rain initially but I was impressed how good (and big) it was for a town of 80,000 inhabitants. That reflects the fact that the population was about 95,000 fifty years ago, when there was still a fair bit of manufacturing in the town. No doubt there are ugly housing estates hidden away from the routes I cycled but it seemed a not unattractive place. Although not an obvious place for a day out, I would recommend it to others to go there for a few hours.

Agreed, I would also recommend a wee trip to Paisley. As you say it's a lovely place and has a number of historic buildings that are worth visiting.😊

Why isn't it an 'obvious' place to visit? It's only 7 miles from Glasgow and 10 minutes by train. It's also close to a nature reserve at Lochwinnoch and is on a Sustrans cycle path.

If you went a couple of weeks ago you could have gone into Paisley Abbey for its open day (a few other places were open as well). It's an annual thing, so maybe next year.

I was going to write "Blast from the past!" - but it's not really.................. I was at college there 1980 - 1983 and remember the town as lively and vibrant, even on dreich days like the one in your film.. So much seems to have changed; I remember college flats with no running hot water and no bathrooms, communal toilets were on the stair landings. I used to g for wonderful baths in the public baths, not sure if they're there any more, and they knocked down one of my flats in New Street. Halls of residence were at the end of Townhead Terrace. I used to borrow vinyl LPs from the library; spent a lot of time in the museum too. The museum is definitely worth a look for its collection of Paisley shawls. I sang in the school choir in the abbey, long before college days. I loved my three years I was in Paisley - great memories :)

Sadly, Paisley is but a shadow of what it once was (you have to see photos and video footage in the mid to late 20th century to see what a bustling town it once was). So many industries have left the town - e.g., Coats (thread), Robertsons (jam), Brown & Polson (food. e.g., custard, creamed rice), Geigy (chemicals), etc. - and shops are derelict because of out of town malls such as Braehead. Not helped either by successive town councils who destroyed priceless heritage in mistaken projects to "modernise" and who make parking a problem thus discouraging further footfall for local businesses.
@terrifictraveltales

It's a shame that there has been such a decline in the industries. Despite this, I still think Paisley has some worthwhile spots to visit. Thanks for watching 😊

I would hardly call the shops 'derelict'. They are just shut, awaiting new owners! Derelict suggests run down, which is not a good image. What about all the historic buildings, , cafes, pubs?
@DH.2016
@DH.2016 Ай бұрын
@ColinDuncan-c8p True. Many are just empty. Shut. But there are also those that are very run down or deteriorating due to lack of money and care (e.g., Forbes Place, trees growing out of buildings, etc). I didn't say it was a bad place or that it doesn't still have a lot of good historic architecture (280 Listed buildings and statues?) but the town used to be buzzing in the sixties and seventies compared to today which I reckon is fair comment and would be great to have back again.

Great video. I was talking to my aunt on the phone this afternoon (she lives in Elderslie) and she was complaining about the roadworks being carried out in Paisley. I watch you video tonight and there are all the traffic cones! My dad and many of his family were born nearby in Johnstone and so they visited Paisley often. I still have a small number of relatives living in the area. My dad is sadly no longer with us and he, along with many of my relatives, were laid to rest in the Garden of Remembrance at Woodside Crematorium. I always visit Paisley at least once a year to pay my respects and remember my dad.

Was it a week day or early Sunday you were there? Because it seemed very quiet,even for a dreich morning!🤔 Unfortunately,the story of Paisley Town Centre is similar to many other high streets.The out- of-town shopping area (Braehead) was the beginning of the end for the town centre. Very nice video🙂

Im very surprised that the population were in hibernation the day of your visit, like last o the brownies comments, when myself and two young sons were looking for St mirre n football ground we stopped at a bus shelter occupied with only person around to ask directions, unlucky for us, he was doped up and got angry, then after a few expletives although he was going the opposite direction tried to jump in car, it was hilarious when I drove off. Only recently, a guy on you tube was filmed with title man taking his pet fire 🔥 for a walk in a PRAM. 😂😅😅😂😂 Honestly,im sure it was the same guy totally on a different planet. ❤ Yip we all have memories for very different reasons. Shame as the place has potential i suppose.

Sadly, Paisley voted overwhelmingly to be ruled by Sir Keir Starmer and his Westminster based Labour Party. The local Labour MP Johanna Baxter voted to remove the Winter Fuel Allowance from the most vulnerable in Paisley. Im sure the locals will be applauding her actions.

I agree it's a real shame the winter fuel payments have been removed from so many deserving senior citizens, but why bring politics into the comments section of a video intended to promote the town ? Surely the choice of MP by the locals is their business.

@johnmorrison1680 4 ай бұрын
The whole of the UK knows the Labour government has means tested the Winter Fuel payment, meaning so many deserving senior citizens will miss out. I think it is wrong, but it's also public knowledge. Holding this against the voters of Paisley is wrong however. Certainly they elected 2 Labour MPs, however they did not know at this point the action the new Government would take on Winter Fuel payments, any more than we know what measures lie ahead in the next Budget. Let's just agree to differ, and enjoy the video on its own merits.
