Lovely beach at St Andrews and Tentsmuir is nice too. I" m not keen on the town itself, its too busy and seems very geared to rich students and golfers, plus the countryside around just doesn' t have enough hills for me, but the coastline is beautiful and the old buildings are lovely. I bet there's an huge divide between the locals , affluent incomers, tourists and students though. It must bs a hard place to live on a low income..i stayed in a very nice caravan park near Guardbridge a few years ago. Off season and cheap! I do miss the bus which used to run from Stirling to St Andrews - it was great if you fancied a day at the beach! On the whole though. Id rather go to Montrose or Arbroath or down the East Neuk.
@terrifictraveltales6 күн бұрын
Agreed-I wouldn't really want to live in St Andrews either and prefer the East Neuk😊 It must be difficult for people on a low income to live in St Andrews. Especially with the number of tourists and students in St Andrews. Think student accommodation was even built in Guardbridge because there's not enough space in St Andrews?

Ive been led from one videoto another😅. I love it when places have historical info about the town. Port Glasgow is another place to have struggled in the past forty years or so. Lookswise it seems like a nice town. What a shame for the folk living in an empty scheme. That can't feel safe. Has the council thought it was cheaper to let the buildings deteriorate and demolish them and sell the land, or zre they planning to replace them?
@terrifictraveltales6 күн бұрын
Yea, it really is a shame. As far as I understand, the council is planning on replacing the buildings after demolition.

Edinburgh Castle gets all the attention, but in terms of history Stirling, the castle, and the surrounds are far more important. When you went to the beheading stone at Gowanhill, that's also the site of a Roman fort. Looking out you can see why, for centuries, the crossing of the Forth has long been fought over. Oh, and instead of Cafe Nero, should have gone to The Burgh which is just across the road :)

North Berwick is still small enough to have avoided an invasion by the usual chain shops that you get in most UK towns of a certain size. As a result of this and the fact that it is rather middle-class, there are still a lot of independent shops on the High Street. If I may pick you up on a small point, the population of the town of North Berwick is actually just under 8,000. That is a big increase from the population of 4,600 in 1971 but I am guessing that the figure of 15,000 mentioned at the beginning refers to the electoral district centred on North Berwick but also including surrounding countryside and villages like Gullane and Dirleton. I would certainly recommend a visit to the Scottish Seabird Centre. I would also recommend climbing North Berwick Law, although it can be quite windy. The view from the top is fantastic on a clear day. I went to Tantallon Castle as a kid but, going back again as an adult a few years ago, I was a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps I had been to so many other castles in the meantime. By the way, the emphasis is on the second syllable of Tantallon - not the first - English is a strange language! In the ticket office / shop at Tantallon Castle, I notice they were selling Luca's ice cream. Luca's are a century old institution in Musselburgh High Street and for Edinburghers returning through Musselburgh from a day out along the East Lothian coast.
@terrifictraveltales12 күн бұрын
That's interesting, thank you! We'll need to go back to North Berwick and climb up North Berwick Law and visit the Seabird Centre.😊 Thanks for watching!

We did that Discovery boat in Dundee some years back. Much better value than the dafty boat in Greenwich where you pay £20 each for a wee wander around. London is even worse than Glasgow for getting a good pint for a reasonable price…
@terrifictraveltales13 күн бұрын
Ah yea, we have seen the Discovery when we have visited Dundee but have yet to take a tour of the boat. It does look interesting. £20 is a lot just to get onto see a boat. I can imagine London is pretty expensive too! Thanks for watching 😊

Excellent and enjoyable video. The reason that you remember the name Glen Sannox is that it is the name of the new CalMac ferry that just started operating to the Isle of Arran. I believe the new bridge opened in September 2024 and I hope to go and see it open for the Waverley one day! It was interesting to see around the Glenlee. One tip that may help when going down the steep stairs is to turn around and go down them backwards as if you were climbing down a ladder (like the moon landings!) When you step on each stair, if the front of your foot is facing inwards rather than outwards, this allows you to put your toes under the stair above and so more of your foot is able to make contact with each stair. This should make it safer to step down each time. It sometimes works for me anyway! As the video was about a historic ship and tonight is Burns Night, I thought I would mention that another historic ship, Cutty Sark, which is at Greenwich in London, took it's name from the Robert Burns' poem "Tam o' Shanter". It refers to the underskirt worn by the witch Nannie in the poem and the ship's figurehead depicts Nannie.
@terrifictraveltales13 күн бұрын
Ah right is that how we remembered the name Glen Sannox! I can't think of what bridge you mean but that does sound great of you could see the Waverly passing through. Yea that does make sense walking down it like a ladder. They were at that odd angle where it feels like you should be able to walk down forwards but they are just a little bit too steep 😂. Thanks for watching 😊

@@terrifictraveltales I meant the new Govan-Partick Bridge near the museum. In the video, I think you were wondering when it opened.
@ThamesShips13 күн бұрын
@ Sorry - my last comment was unclear. I believe that the Patrick - Govan bridge is on a pivot and the bridge can swing on this pivot to allow it to open for vessels that need to pass. I was saying that it would be great to see the bridge swing open some time to allow the Waverley to pass.

I last visited Clune Park in August 2022, when the fencing was not as robust as it is now. On that occasion I drove there and got out of my car for perhaps two minutes and found the whole experience extremely nerve-wracking, even as a six-foot tall man who is not normally unduly affected by potential danger. By that stage, Inverclyde Council had built modern flats nearby and had offered places there to all the existing tenants at Clune Park but the rent they were paying at Clune Park was peanuts and they would be paying more in the new flats. A small number of speculators had bought most of the Clune Park and were refusing to sell them to the council for a price the council were prepared to shell out before demolishing theses old flats. As Ian stated, the flats built at the turn of the 20th century look superficially like many red sandstone flats in smart parts of Glasgow but, as Joanna(?) read out, most of the flats were either for shipyard workers at Scott Lithgow either for single occupancy or for married couples with no children.
@terrifictraveltales14 күн бұрын
Yea, think the council made the fence more robust because people were still jumping over it and entering the buildings. That's interesting re the flats-I wouldn't move either if it was going to cost so much more.
