An Update on Phabeni & The Herd! One big happy family 💚🐘
We hope you enjoyed watching the introductions between Phabeni and the members of the herd, with all the nail-biting action and reactions, the heartwarming and tender moments, the funny back-kicks and tusk-pokes, and the few complete surprises! It was a journey in itself, and one that was very important to ease Phabeni into the herd, and to ensure no stress to the herd or the little calf meeting them. But a new beginning is here now, as we are able to move on to showing you the next step… into the wild, with Phabeni and the whole herd.
We move now from the orphanage to the bush, where Phabeni takes milk bottles in the company of the elephants in the wilderness, and joins them for all-day walks. Since this little bull is much stronger than Khanyisa was at his age, without the wounds or affects of snaring to contend with and overcome, he has been able to take on full day walks quickly. He has familiar comforts around him to help him adapt, such as his bottles delivered by his carers and the presence of the elephants he has bonded with.
Setombe has clearly taken on the responsibility of being Phabeni’s mother, having adopted him right off the bat. Lundi did not contend with her for the role, and it was very clear to all of us that Setombe had her heart set on this little bull from the start. It has been so special to witness this new side of Setombe and we are excited to watch her have her moment in the sun!
It is natural for older females to birth new babies every few years, and so perhaps Setombe simply felt ready for her turn to be a mother again. Klaserie is staying close too, still very connected to her mother.
Enjoy these moments of transition, from milk bottles in the orphanage to bottles in the wild, with all the elephants around to watch over Phabeni, and help our team raise him.

What an interesting study this will be. Setombe, who by right of age and dominance, chose not to be matriarch, became a helicopter mom to her own daughter Klaserie, has now stepped up to be a mother again in her elder years. Perhaps this is the cycle of the female ellie in life that we are witnessing. Even looking at Khanyisa as she is now transitioning into big sister and looking like shes shifting into allomother training. Our human phrase "Actions speak louder than words", seems to be playing out. Even Sebakwe, whom i choose to call Setombe's husband, is stepping forward. Life is grand, if allowed to progress naturally. What a wonderful experience to witness.

It’s amazing to see how the adult elephants always surround the babies while they walk, and how they close ranks when stopped. It’s so sweet to see how attached Setombe is to Phabeni - a personal escort to the orphanage, monitoring his milk and then saying “nope, you’ve been exposed too long, back to the safety of numbers, the bottle will just have to follow you”. I have so enjoyed all of the videos over these past years, and have learned so much about elephants. All of you are to be commended for your hard work and love for these amazing animals.

I swear he is smiling these days!! It's so wonderful seeing him integrate into his loving herd. His bond with his Mama Setombe is so tight, she is near him at all times. I have also noticed her daughter Klaserie has been giving them space. It's all so exhilarating to watch. ❤ And Khanyisa!! She has gone from jealous bratty four year old to sweet, protective older sister in what seems like overnight! It all makes my heart so happy. It's been a lonely winter for me, the Herd has really pulled me through!

@@herdelephantorphanage - it is absolutely amazing! For me, Setombe & Phabeni just reflected my very first day of kindergarten. My mother walked with me into the classroom and handed me to my teacher. Happy and smiling, she waved me off, and after that I enjoyed turning up to every day of school. I am a lot lot lot older now 😁- but that's what I saw Setombe do, and that is an incredible mother raising a wonderful confident little bull calf.

He’s so different from Khanyisa, he’s a little round ball of energy. Like human children, the boys are usually more active than the girls, and like human children, he’s too busy playing to eat properly. Tears were rolling down my face when Setombe was walking him home, but then him running to his elephant family and our pink princess being so kind to him was to much. It was such a beautiful, loving video of him eating, walking in the bush and being accepted as one of them. Did have a bit of a "aaawww" when he was finishing his milk bottle and Khynisia seemed like she was saying"what about me". I LOVED everything from start to finish. Thank you to all. 🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️

Phabeni has come so far in such a short time! He & Setombe have fully embraced their relationship as mother & son which is really beautiful 🥰 So sweet that she drops him off to the nursery door every night. The other females are amazing too, providing support at all times. When Setombe decides bottle time is over & it's time to head into the bush, Phabeni is hot on her heels & so are the other females! It's beyond impressive to watch this gentle giants how they behave, the love they show Phabeni, the acceptance and how Phabeni walked right in is definitely unique. Setombe walking the tiny elephant to the orphanage and Phabeni running to the Herd, I am blown by all this.
