An upright fridge lets all the cold air spill out every time you open the door , A chest fridge the cold air stays trapped down in the bottom , meaning the fridge will chew less power of the 12v system trying to get the compartment back to temperature as far as I understand it .

I don’t really understand why the big rant !! I’ve done a upright fridge and in my opinion its the best configuration for a troopy by far (Note in my opinion there’s only one upright fridge that fits or at least this is the only one i could find) If we parked them side by side you’d have to eat your words or at least some of them. ( Or i could quickly make you a sandwich as my fridge is so assessable lol😂) Why not take a look at what other people have done there’s pros and cons to everything. What i hear when listening to your video Andrew is that I’ve made a huge mistake and don’t know what I’m doing…. When in fact we should be proud of all the different ideas people come up with in these amazing trucks. Maybe you could see my Troopy and say its a real surprise and I think it’s fantastic but I’ll stick with my chest fridge. Or just see it and go wow !! I this is the first one that I’ve seen that works. Note - its not noisy, I don’t have to sift around digging for items, I’m only 172cm so I couldn’t reach your fridge even if i want to put it there. Yes you can’t get into it when were in the truck. Well you can its a little tricky i must admit but i never really feel the need to once I’m inside I’m normally going to bed. This could be fixed by moving the fridge back a 100mm (next time 😂) I value all your experience and your opinions but remember they are just that. Others also have experience keep up the good work you are an amazing person sometimes i just don’t get the rants. 🤷♂️

WOW. Last week you made one of your best "non travelling" videos ever on Lithium batteries, and 7 days later you drop this nonsense. Almost everything you complained about is wrong. You say that upright fridges rattle, You just don't know how to pack them properly. It doesn't take much. My glove box rattles more then my fridge. They don't get in the way when climbing into the back and they don't inhibit access. I can get to at least 2/3s of the gear in my Troopy while still standing on the ground. Of course it's your channel and you have the right to rant, but this video, and claiming that a Troopy is the wrong vehicle for those of us with an upright fridge was just an insult to those of us who have designed the interior of our Troopys to make an upright fridge work. I'm looking forward to better content next video.

@oldbloke2043 күн бұрын
A comment I saw recently that made a lot of sense, imo, was that every time you open an upright fridge/freezer all the cold will fall out but not with a chest type appliance as the cold air sits in the bottom of it. Any cold air that is lost has to be replaced using power, obviously. Mind you I use an esky so no practical experience of either really.

So i had a upright fridge in a VW Bus (and with a lot of off-roading and bad roads). I had it for 18 Years. No rattle from the inside of the fridge ever. Never. You could fill them like the chest ones as well. This point is not really valid tho. See it from the space usage: it was not high, so i could fit the same in my Defender (which is almost similar space wise) and could open it. The design of the build would make it possible without any issues. The only argument for me is that if you are in hot countries, you need to make sure to keep the thing staying cold. And this is the point of the chest fridges. You don’t loose that much temperature when opening. (Btw: i love my Engel Box and would never change, but i ratteling and accessibility is not the point for me personally)

Granted you lose storage, and I can't tell exactly where your chest fridge is to suggest utilising that storage as an alternative. Could you place the upright fridge where the two draws are that opened sliding inwards to the centre (on the left side of the frame). You can still leave the third draw at the bottom so you have one on either side accessible from the back and fridge would be accessible from both inside and outside the car?

We love our upright fridge...love it, love it, love it, love it, love it!!! Just turn the fridge around so the door opens into the walkway. @LuaiADVКүн бұрын
Keyboard warrior here, I agree that an upright fridge is not suitable for a van type vehicle. However I disagree with your reasoning. Sure, access is important. But you can creatively work around this. The biggest disadvantage is the thermal exchange when you open and close the door. On a chest type, the cooler and denser air is low and inside the chest. Whereas in an upright, you are moving the cooler air out with every open and shut of the door. The upright is somewhat limited in positioning. And usually requires it to be behind the rear axle. This causes the rear suspension to work extra hard to compensate for the overhang behind the rear axle. A rule I like to follow when building a Troopy is that you always want race car weight distribution. This means all the weight should be as low as possible and as center between the axles as possible. And work around that.
@LuaiADVКүн бұрын
With the weight sitting between the axles. You have less wear and tear on the suspension and better suspension performance. Better handling. And overall better weight distribution when driving on sand. Troopys are easy to overweight or put the heavyweight on a side. Left right or front rear. But with proper distribution and choosing the right gear. You can really improve its performance over stock and get all the goodies to sustain longer adventures.

@@4xoverland Probably the only inconvenience of a troop carrier is the lack of a convenient place to house an upright fridge. After working out food rations for a 4 day trip, I have opted for a 50 litre chesty. Anything longer than 4 days without visiting a store, I will use my old portable 40 litre chest freezer as well. Have arranged the internal space of the 50 litre chesty so I can easily retrieve the milk, a couple of stubbies and the tomato sauce, without the hassle of nearly emptying the thing just to retrieve these often used items.Happy camping Andrew.

,,,or a caravan. You don't hear the rattles from a caravan and their upright walls are conducive to such units of course. That said, I think that the best fridge in a caravan I have seen is in the Caravelair Arteca (or Artica - I forget) which is a deep wide drawer in the kitchen that looks like part of the furnishings. In essence, a built in slide-out chest fridge. Many campervans in Europe are now fitting what looks like a dwarf upright fridge, but again, it is a sort of hybrid drawer/upright/chest style thing. This wouldn't really work in a Troopy though as the rear of the vehicle doesn't have 90 degree angled aperture and it would need to be placed towards the middle, which will make access difficult and proves the point Andrew was making about upright fridges (of any design) not being suitable for the Troopy.

I tried a chest style fridge before getting the upright, and it just didn’t work for us. It was such a pain to access it (didn’t have a slide) while also having the KAON roof shelf in place. I didn’t find the rattles from the fridge contents too bad on our “mini lap”, however we had a lot of other rattles and what not that masked it - Holy balls, the road to Steep Point is INSANE!

Hi andrew after years of looking i finally found a canopy for a defender 110 double cab it is a Bushtech Aluminium canopy that fits on the tub the tub is what i would call awkward i also have a duel zone 75L fridge freezer that is very handy for what i do hunting/camping/offroading but it is big any ideas on how to set it up i remember you doing a video years ago on a 110 double cab but it was more of a coffee machine on wheels
