@@saltysocks1074In order to maintain a well regulated militia, the right of THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR arms shall not be infringed. A militia is made up of civilians. If civilians cannot own weapons, there can be no militia. The founding father make it very clear in documents and letters outside of the constitution that the people are meant to be able to retain the power needed to overthrow the government if need be. Historians have also noted that "well regulated" did not mean the same thing during the time it was written and language and meaning change over time. Which changes the context in which some people choose to believe that it means people in the military or who go through extensive training on a regular basis and does not apply to the average citizen.

@@saltysocks1074 "It seems to be the case that at the time the Constitution was founded, there was an expectation that the majority of the US military power was going to come from a combination of militia and federal armed services." That's correct. "Paraphrasing but the second amendment more or less says in order to maintain a well regulated militia, the right to bear arms shall not be infringed." Your paraphrase is only half-right; Roger Sherman made the argument that, since the people have the right to keep and bear arms, that _the states_ should also be able to arm themselves, which is what the second amendment was about, the states arming themselves with militia. His argument, was that a state's right to arm itself is an outgrowth of the individual right to arm oneself, and that the two are tied together, that you don't have one without the other, and that if the state is to have the right to be armed, the people must also have the right to be armed, and vice versa. The argument is not teleological, or instrumental, in nature.

The right's obsession with California has become a derangement syndrome. Lots of red states are suffering population loss, opioid addiction epidemics and suicide, rusted out towns with no much industry and higher crime, but all you hear 24/7 on the left is CA CA CA. Despite the fact that California gets 20 times the private sector investment of TX and FL ($100B vs $5B) per year. Despite the fact that CA is #1 in many industries: agriculture, manufacturing, software, hardware, media, tourism, aerospace, and #2 in many others, biotech, greentech, fintech, etc. Despite the fact that the homeless population has large oscillated between 130-170k since 2000, that the murder rate in CA is lower than TX and FL, and on the city level, SF is vastly lower than say, Houston or DFW. The property time rate is roughly the same between CA and TX, but all you ever see in right wing media is the smash-n-grabs in CA, not in TX. Or shall we bring up the fact if you go back and look at CA in the 1980s, crime was much much higher and SF was a shooting zone? But ok, let's talk about the PG&E issue. Anna frankly, doesn't know anything. So California's grid is old, and the state's forest density has gone up considerably since then at the same time that California is becoming more arrid, more dry, and hence more prone to epic fires. This is not PG&E's fault, it's largely the fault of the Federal Government and California Government's forest management. But leaving that aside, her idea that you'd simply rebuild 100 yrs of infrastructure and bury the wires ignores the fact that this would cost more than PG&E's entire valuation. It costs $2.5 million to bury 1 mile of grid, and $25 billion to bury 10,000 miles. There are 33,000 miles of powerlines in CA, costing $75 billion to bury, or twice the market-cap of PGE and many many times their revenues. In short, there is no way for PG&E to do this without government help, and Anna frankly, wanted PG&E to go bankrupt and have the CA government seize and run it. That's her whole beef with Newsom, he's not socialist enough for it. Newsom did the right thing in an emergency, bailing out a company behind a critical piece of infrastructure. The right just loves to see Anna bash Newsom, even though, she's effectively doing it because he isn't enough of a communist for her in nationalizing power companies. The problems in SF are nuanced, and this channel doesn't have the intellectual bandwidth to deal with it. SF had just as much crime and homelessness in 2018, and for those who live and worked there, they know WHERE the tent encampments are, and where they aren't, like many cities, there's a skidrow, and then there are the clean and wealthy areas. SF's problem is largely that tech workers post-COVID refused to return to work, and work-from-home and partial-remote-work have largely destroyed the downtown economy supported by those workers. At the same time, investment funds like Blackrock and Vanguard, plus overseas funds from Saudis and Chinese, have been buying up real estate in the city but not renting it, so you end up with work-from-home policies combined with high rents, basically making it economically advantageous for people to live and work outside the city. Most people I know aren't moving out of SF for crime or homeless, they've been living with that for decades. They're moving because rents are expensive and they don't *need* to live in the city, when you can work at OpenAI doing machine learning pulling down $450,000/yr but live in an area with 50% cheaper rent, what do you think is gonna happen? The right wing has an obsession with making everything about taxes or some woke policy, when the reality is, the businesses come to SF to obtain far more value from the network effect of other companies, and don't give a sh!t about the taxes. It's the same reason why Shenzhen is a huge manufacturing center, or Taiwan rules in Semiconductors. Once a regional nexus gets established, it draws in more, because there's a lot more to gain to being next to other billion dollar synergistic companies than moving 1000 miles away to get a small tax cut. California is not a mad max catastrophe, it is doing very well economically, there's a slight historical bump in homelessness, the population trend is largely the same as it has been since 1990 peak when the the growth curve inverted, and the real issue that's plaguing California is simply this: Housing.

“Non-violent” offenders means nothing. A lot of criminals plead down their charges. So the prosecutor will drop more serious charges and convict on a lesser charge. That’s how you had a lot of people that on paper are serving time for drug possession, and you’d have activists screeching about it. In reality those cases are almost all the result of plea deals.
@jacquelineking5783
@jacquelineking5783 8 ай бұрын
Or barring plea deals it is the Al Capone Arrest method in which if can't get them on the one thing get them on what you can. Because going by non- violent as a standard tax evasion is pretty non- violent and Capone should not have spent time in jail much less Alcatraz for it.
@DefinitelyNotAMachineCultist
@DefinitelyNotAMachineCultist 8 ай бұрын
That, and you also have people who are innocent pleading to lesser charges thanks to coercion from prosecutors and the like. The Reid technique that seems to have been in fashion since the 60s has a surprisingly high rate of false confessions that only turn out to be false after the damage has been done. The number of 'serious offenders' could be higher or lower than petty crime stats might indicate. Prevention is better than cure in this case, and by prevention I mean potential victims that can defend themselves. _“If violent crime is to be curbed, it is only the intended victim who can do it. The felon does not fear the police, and he fears neither judge nor jury. Therefore, what he must be taught to fear is his victim.”_ - Jeff Cooper Always sounded a bit gun nutty to me, but considering the lower crime rates (including for property crimes) in places with high rates of legal ownership…

Yeah, they usually are plead down from bogus distribution charges based on the amount in their possession, not actual evidence of distribution. But as she said if it were just legalized and highly regulated it would take a lot of strain off the justice system. Part of the issue with the "more police" strategy is that many major cities have no room to house those arrested and even if they do, lack staff to oversee them.

Interesting point actually because it's not just about being called something else. I think it is the desire to be called a woman. This is the correct answer, because their response will invariably be "because you're _taking away_ from people who identify as women," and that's where it comes out that their goal is to take away from women. Those "violent crime" stats are most likely inaccurate, given how they are either categorized or policed by the SF government. Even if somebody get's arrested for a "violent crime", they can be charged with a lesser crime keeping them out of prison, and making the statistics unreliable. Also, if cops are perusing crimes that are covered with bureaucratic red-tape, there's really no point in enforcing those laws. Which also means there's little point in citizens reporting them, since law enforcement won't pursue the matter, and criminals may seek revenge for the attempt to get them arrested. It's amazing how the people in CA can see what's happening with their own two eyes, yet still believe these conflicting statistics that their government provides.

I remember when it was Democrats who were the ones who were against war at nearly any cost. I remember when it was Democrats who pushed back against warning stickers on rap music. . The Democrats were always pushing back on conservatives, but they agreed that children should not be subjected to sexual materials and the thought of children at a drag show, was as repulsive to them as the GOP. When Democrats were not only fine with religion, but quite a number were open about their faith. . What we have seen in the last 10 years is a FAR, FAR cry from where they were only 20 years ago. They allowed the Marxist cult to step in and CONSUME the party and allow them to call ALL the shots. To think they have come to the point now, when "trans care for children" is a hill they have CHOSEN to die upon, is absolutely mind boggling.
