Yep, it appears most of us Nicaraguans do have West African ancestry from slaves. I'm roughly 1/3 European, Amerindian, and African and I never would have known. My parents are also about 1/3 African and they are unrelated. Nicaraguan people have had some very significant admixture and most don't know this.

Mike689 How is it Nicaraguans don't know they have African slaves in their family. The truth is they do know and the fact is they didn't want to be associated with African and black blood because it's not considered something to be proud of. The Caribbean, central America,and south America has s history of slavery so to be surprised is nonsense.

It depends… most are around 50/50 and others goes one way or another. In Mexico that’s not the case though. There’s a lot of resentment towards Spanish and even clearly mostly European descended people claim “Aztec blood” lol Everyone has a different perspective on their identity

Actual Latin Americans are fully aware of the complex mix that exists in Latin America. And actually, that's not the case. Widespread genetic research conducted on Latin Americans in all major countries including Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Dominican Republic, and Chile has concluded that the average Latin American's genes are not "mostly" anything. However, the largest single ethnic contribution is Iberian (Spanish/Portuguese) at around 40-50% of the average person's DNA. It's around 25% in Peru and over 65% in Cuba (Yes, that's after taking into account Black Cubans). Also, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans and Salvadorans are taught they are mixed race people from a young age

I don't have a very exotic background; all the typical Anglo-European heritage, English, Irish, Scottish, French, Sweden, The Netherlands. My children and grandchildren though are British, African, Latinas, Middle Eastern, the Caribbean. So fascinating! I discovered my Great-grandmother, a hardworking woman born in 1863 and she died in 1938, she was born of Northern Irish parents who immigrated to Canada because of the Irish famine. I feel such a connection to her and dearly wish I could have met her. She bore 11 children and I found all their names and their spouses and children's names - even grandchildren's names. It's all so very interesting.

Nicaragua has an incredibly diverse background. I had my Nicaraguan husband take a DNA test from Ancestry and his ethnicity is from 17 different regions - Spain and Indigenous Central America being the most prominent. But he has two other Indigenous groups, 8 different African groups, Sardinia (that was unexpected, England/NW Europe, Jewish, Basque, and Scotland. Our neighbors are from Togo and we joke with him that they're family now.

I wouldn't put it that way: instead of "Spanish royalty", "Spanish nobility" is more likely ... All those viceroys in Hispanic America between the 1500s and the 1800s were in fact Spanish nobles "Grandes de España": some of them blood-linked to the Royal House of Spain, some not. And the viceroys were often Spanish high-rank militars, which in those times were often Spanish nobles (not all the time though: several Conquistadors had no noble blood, but because of their achievements in America were nobled by the King of Spain) .

@amiquigonzales7917
@amiquigonzales7917 2 жыл бұрын
@@jbak87 Yeah, and most of those Europeans were Spaniards, who were kind of mixed as well: most of Spaniards settling in America after the Discovery were Andalusian and Canarian, which means several of them might have had Arab ancestors as they invaded Spain and lived and ruled there for about 800 years. If you ask me, most Andalusians are naturally tanned and black-haired and black-eyed, they don't look like Trump, for instance. There are Spaniards who look like Trump especially in the north of Spain, and they don't have foreign ancestors, they are native-born Spaniards.

It isn't that rare as you think. Many families in Latin America are of noble origin because the nobility was way bigger than in, say, Britain. This, the seemingly enormous fecundity of the nobility in the Iberian Peninsula and the continuity of that in the Americas, means it's not impossible.

I'm a white Latina, but my ancestry is so diverse and interesting. I think latinos in general have experiences where your ancestors and family members are very diverse, many different skin tones even among siblings. Based on my family's oral history, I know I have indigenous great great grandparents, some ancestors descending from spaniards, and also some afro-latino ancestors. My grandmother on my dad's side had 9 children, and I always thought it was interesting how despite them all having extremely similar facial features, they all have a different skin tones. From quite dark skinned to very light. My dad is the whitest of the group, hence me. But I would love to someday have something like this ancestry thing done for my family. Given the iffiness of central America's record keeping in rural areas, it might be very hard or even impossible to get more concrete details on some of these people, yet it would be incredible if there could be a chance of me figuring something out.

This is what most people either forgot or really just don't know. All the people of Latin descent are Afrikan. When you study the history of what happened during the 1400's and the women were Raped and the men , elders and children were Killed by the Invaders.When that all went on they created a new breed/look of people and they were taught to never claim their Black/Afrikan side.To hate the darker skinned etc....Colombus and his friends to this day. What ever language you speak yup that's the ones who conquered your people & enslaved U!

Except for atheists, one just needs to read Genesis where it all began in NE Africa. So we’re all part African. So Black people need to get over it when they see someone “trying to act black”it’s not about a cultural perspective. DNA will show Africa is in all of us. Also indigenous Africans ARE DIFFERENT SHADES BROWN, LIGHT BLACK, RED, etc . It ain’t just a black thang.

Jenae, what you're saying here is not at all accurate. I'm Caribbean and DO have African blood. But many places in Latin America had ZERO African influence. Anywhere the Spaniards could get by with taking the indigenous people as slaves, they did not bring slaves. So, the blood lines there are either 100% indigenous, or Indigenous + European. While there is a significant number of Latinos of African descent, to assert that *all* Latinos and Latinas are Black is only possible if one does not know much about the history of The Americas. (Unless, of course, you mean waaaaaaaay, waaaaaay back in evolution, when there was no "White" people and we all--you, me, he, she, they, xe--were black...)

We cannot say that with certainty. The slaves of ancient Rome, for instance, were often too unhealthy to have children. As David Hackett Fischer & James Kelly remark in their book "Bound Away," about Virginia, it was very unusual in human history for a slave population to maintain itself by "natural increase"--by reproduction. What happened in English-speaking mainland North America was odd. From classical antiquity to the sugar plantations of Brazil & the Caribbean, masters usually had to replenish their slave numbers through new purchases or new captures.

Brian Patrick O'Malley, Hey I’m all for the super specific, but it’s on you to explain to most black Americans that they aren’t descendants of slaves either...or worse; a good chunk of black Americans are descendants of slave owners. Lol EDIT: I would prefer that people just stop this “survival of the weakest” competition altogether, but if people are going to continue to demand special treatment because of the historical struggle of people that they’ve never met, and with whom they share only skin color, it has to be stated that the same historical struggles have been forced on people of all skin colors.
