That is amazing. Thanks for sharing this bit of history. Of course, the signature X was standard nit just for former slaves who weren’t allowed to Hearn to read or write, but many of the poor whites also had the same signature. Years ago, in the early ‘70’s when I began working, I encountered the same X Signatures. In Central America, a fisherman would draw a fish, or 🔨.

My mom couldn't sign✍🏻 her name, due to not having any education at all, so she would sign her name with an X as well.... Veryyyy sad, I'm the first and only within my generation and my mom's generation to have graduated high school and college, I was the one and only to havebroken that cycle😢😢😢 None of my four siblings finished even junior high school 🎒🏫, I complete both junior, high school, and College.

She is a disgrace! I am half black and Puerto Rican with a Spanish last on the Puerto Rican side. I understand my history and would never spit on my ancestors of Caucasian blood that originated in Spain. To find out that she is part white and she was disappointed is outright shameful. They and everyone needs to keep in mind that Black people were still not able to marry legally even after emancipation depending on the county and/or state. Many Black men and women lived together and had children but weren't legally able to marry or just didn't... Doesn't mean they weren't present in their children's lives or their households...
