I have the "We are rewind" & have had it for about a year. It cost me an arm & leg to friggin' get it here! That said, I'm glad I have it. After an azimuth adjustment, it works fine. The loudness & quality of the sound depends on the tape being played. But all & all, EXPENSIVE but fine. I'm happy with it.
@pavelmracek853810 ай бұрын
What exactly do you mean by "azimuth adjustment"? I already received a third replacement and all of them sound like absolute garbage (especially treble) due to the azimuth. I find out that is gets better when I pull the door slightly, but it feels absolutely ridiculous to do things like this with such an expensive device. Matthieu from the company wrote me that they have never heard about this before from other customers, are they deaf? Because three units with the same fault in a row, that cannot be a mistake. Overall, a huge disappointment. So anything that would improve this would be greatly appreciated.
@thecatacombz903410 ай бұрын
Yes please explain the azimuth adjustment you made. Please create a video showing us how to do it. This would be very helpful to anyone that owns one. Thanks!
@WillWill5610 ай бұрын
Azimuth is a pretty common adjustment on most cassette players. There will be a screw near the play head that will be exposed when you hit the play button, and you adjust this with a screwdriver or other tool while playing a tape and listen as the sound gets brighter/duller. You're aiming for the brightest sound you can get, so listen for cymbals and hi-hats. On portable cassette players like the We Are Rewind or FiiO CP13, to adjust azimuth you need to play a cassette with the door open in order to do this, this means opening the door and putting the cassette in the "wrong" spot so that the tape ends up sitting where it would be if the door was closed, but with the door still open.

When talking about whether to buy something like the Fiio vs buying an 80s or 90s Walkman, it's important to remember that your mileage may vary enormously with buying vintage devices. For every five supposedly "working" vintage walkman I've bought, i might get one that lasts beyond the first six months and it's not always a case of replacing belts. This should be factored into any decision on price. At least with the new devices, you're going to get a minimum one-year warranty. On that topic, there are people claiming the Fiio is too expensive. I bought mine for £99 in the UK, which, looking at an inflation calculator, is equivalent of about £40 in the late 1980s, which seems perfectly fair for a device of this build quality. (The walkman-type devices you could get for, say, £20 back then would have been plastic, with even cheaper mechanisms than the maligned Tanashin one, and I bet very few have survived.) I think it's encouraging to see the Fiio and We Are Rewind devices. We may not get anything better in the future but at least there are two decent new personal cassette players to choose from for anyone who doesn't want the hassle of maintaining a vintage device.
@anadialog2 ай бұрын
If you think on using them without any service, you are perfectly right but there is no point in doing that also for you stated besides the most important part, sound. You must do an overhaul, meaning replace belts and capacitors. Not too expensive just hard to find people who still do that. At that point you’re good for another 10/20 years!

Hello Guido, there you are the analog expert as your yt channel is called, and i enjoy a lot of your content you post.There i now have a question about vinyl playback. I have an vintage Philips 777 turntable which is a fantastic device in my opinion. But my dac and amplifier are from the new generation, a combi of NAD c658 and c 298. What i find when i am enjoying an evening listening to my vinyl records is a good and detailed sound with enough mids and highs, and the soundstage is also excellent. But i always experience a lack of deepness and bass, whichever quality record i listen to. Can an update to a modern turntable in a reasonable pricerange solve this problem, or is my vintage turntable from the golden age of vinyl good enough. It’s called a mobile phone! (humour). I can see hackles rising. Tape players were the thing of my past and some portables were as cheap as chips. Often needing a little tweak of the playback head to get the best treble. Do they still use Dolby to reduce the hiss? Eventually the heads would wear down or the gizmo went into tape chewing phase destroying your prize recordings. So I’m afraid I won’t be going back there even though I love boys toys. I always respect each to their own as no doubt people think I’m a vinyl dinosaur-but I love it . In my ignorance is there much new recorded music out there on tape or is it for playing your own recordings/vintage tapes? For those who love it-enjoy. 👍 I do appreciate the channel is mainly about analogue devices and so understand the interest in such devices.

The W1200 performs fine for playback, as does the Sony CD-S70, not able to compete with older high quality decks from the 80s,90 and early 2000s but comparable to budget or even some lower mid range decks from that time period. The W&F from these mechanisms is perfectly acceptable but the lack of proper noise reduction is one major issue. Both companies also do OK when it comes to recording on unused ferric cassettes because they use AC bias recording whereas others use DC bias which introduces unacceptable noise. Was das laufwerk betrifft.... welche alternativen gibts aktuell? Eine kleine Anmerkung zu Dolby, ich habs bei meinen Tapedecks nie benutzt weils die aufnahmen verfälscht hat, mit oder ohne ich hab da keinen riesen unterschied gehört.

a belt clip would be nice

No one is actually going to use that.

It's maybe a step nearer, but that thing is so underwhelming in it's design. That's the problem really, because Sony (for instance) had top designers for their Walkman's, and if we just consider the early WM models, they were gorgeous, and have not been surpassed since. But, that's not to say some clever young designer will come up with an ultra sleek model using quality parts.

Why do none of these new cassette players have autoreverse or noise reduction?
@anadialog2 ай бұрын
Actually almost all new portable players have auto reverse but it was a wise choice NOT to put it because the tape head azimuth goes to hell that way. Noise reduction is out of the game because Dolby does not license it anymore and dbx doesn’t do it anymore.

My "we are rewind" went to trash. He had a parasite noise each ~60 seconds

How disappointing , I was really looking forward to a positive review of the Fiio Cp13 can't understand why this company would make something that seems not as good as the We are Rewind product, embarrassing if you ask me.

Wish Sony rerelease cassette walkman just like you owned

Those late 80s Sonys with the little green button all have gears that are prone to breakage and seem to have w&f problems no matter how much u refurbish them. Will avoid if anyone is looking for a more fuss free old Walkman.

Yes, same awful dirt cheap mechanism you get on $5 units :(
@markalot10 ай бұрын
No one is mass producing the mechanism, and if someone started making one the price would be very high. Too bad. :(

|)(| Dolby Noise Reduction? 120uS/70uS Equalization? It should at least have type B. The WM-10 Sony Walkman is the best one I've had. Too bad, you'd probably have get a Japanese girlfriend to have Sony secretly manufacture a special one just for you.
