Absolutely great movie-examples. The Nakamichi 480Z was my first Cassette-Deck of that Brand in my life, after it I got 700ZXL, 1000ZXL (both used) and Dragon (new).

The KZbinr Techmoan has made a couple of videos about the different tape recorders used in the original 1960:s TV-series Mission Impossible. The tape recorders were used to give IMF team leader Jim Phelphs (Peter Graves) his missions. When the tape came to the end, the tape recorder was self destructed in five seconds! Good luck, Jim!😄

I've owned record players continuesly since the 70's and I would NEVER put any force on the cantilever towards the cartridge body. You may get away with it on a DJ cartridge or one with a short cantilever or one with a very low compliance. You correctly stated that you should always clean using a brush moving the brush from the body towards the stylus, so why on earth hold the gel and push towards the cartridge? The correct way to use this type of product is to place the gel below the stylus and lower the cartridge using the lift mechanism so as to avoid any side to side or lateral movement. Anyone with a thin walled long cantilever such as the Audio Technica range is likely to destroy their cartridge if they follow your advice.

A piece of Hi Fi history, many soldiers in Vietnam when they came home brought Japanese components they bought at PXs, etc. Sansui, Akai, etc. It really got Japanese equipment known in US for the age of Japanese stereos! Now considered the golden age of receivers!

Interesting, bit of trivia, when Alex goes to music store there is a top ten list. One of the bands listed is Heaven 17. In the 80's a group took that name for themselves.

The X-2000 series was indeed the best and last series of R2R from TEAC. Especially the 2-track version X-2000 M with 38cm/s speed is one of the best home R2R devices ever built. I consider myself very lucky to own one of these, which I bought new in 1990.

Thanks for the great new video. Diva is a 1981 French thriller film directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix which you must see and show some credits. Nagra and Nakamichi are the main actors I'm my opinion. Great soundtrack also. But here comes the question. We have tape revival with old tapes and old decks? Where are the new equipment?

When you quote a frequency curve it would be nice if you could also quote the cut-off dB-down level at which the range cuts off. Otherwise the frequency range is meaningless - especially those ones that specify the cliche 20Hz to 20kHz range.

Hi Guido. You do see a lot of great stuff in movies, so this is an awesome idea. Let's have some more of these videos, and with other types of gear as well. I guess it's quite normal for people like us to immediately forget all about the plot and focus on the gear that's being used, or appears in the background, and try to identify it. At least it's normal for me. Just ask my wife, though she won't agree about the normal part, and tends to get pissed when I rewind, freeze the movie, move closer to the screen and starts talking to her about the gear. "I was watching that"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "I know honey, but now it finally started to get interesting". One movie that most definitely comes to mind right away is Guardians of the Galaxy since it started the current tape fetish for a lot of people. I'm actually surprised that it wasn't the first example in this video, and that no one else has mentioned it in the comments so far. There's so many good examples that it almost blocks my brain, but I'll be posting suggestions as I get it sorted out. Stay cool Mate. All the best from Denmark.

Thanks! Unfortunately I don’t see much interest (low visualizations) in any case we will see. I did not put Guardians of the Galaxy first of all because we all know about it and most importantly I wanted to stick with classic movies. The old school stuff! Maybe in the future, in an episode dedicated to recent movies!

Hi, you should not skip Il secondo tragico Fantozzi, when Fantozzi covers Conte Semenzara (maybe a Geloso recorder) and Fantozzi subisce ancora, in the scene where Fantozzi covers all the colleagues "absent" from work (Akai db4000 it seems). Not the proper use of a tape recorder, but a specific instrument to create humor Btw, also in Mission: Impossible (old tv series), tape recorders have been used (and in theory destroied at every mission), but also From Russia with love, even if that was a Q design, small recorder is present

For volume 2 add the Akai 1722 ii R2R from the Canadian made movie “The Changeling”. The deck is instrumental in the plot development. The scene (53 mins into the movie) is based around what he hears. The movie is available on KZbin for free. It’s a classic. BTW, another vote for “The Conversation”.

Oh no, I need to rectify - cross field alows to send bias without any touch to tape. In standard technologies it is imposible because we need full contact to bias/audio head because audio has to be fully transferred to magnetic particles. .. Bias head in cross field is not wearing and due to it its parameters do not change by friction to tape. Bias fluctuations (increase with every meter of tape movement) is 90% reason of degradation in recording mode and may be corrected by else distancing recording head from tape in play mode, or using separate recorder for reproduction only and often aligning bias. . I think downside of cross fileld may be difficulty to keep precision distance from bias head to tape because tapes are different, they , may be localy deformed while it decides about bias and perfomance . .
