In this first video of three, we are going to assemble a complete vintage hi-fi system with a low budget, around 1000$-€: turntable, cartridge, amplifier, speakers all vintage!

I'd recommend the budget AR 4x over the 3a with the amplifiers mentionned. In my experience the 3a needs loads of current, only really opens up with 100wpc plus and the tweeters and woofer surrounds are generally knackered. The 4x with it's alnico woofer actually sounds nicer than the 3a (but with much lower resolution) and has cloth surround woofers and reliable cone tweeter. It puts many modern speakers to shame with its full fat sound with proper low bass. The efficiency is lowish by the standards of the day when it was made, but not too bad in these days of tiny 5" woofer boxes. It works fantastically well with a modern class d amplifier (sorry vintage fans!).

Very nicce video. You're right, vintage hi-fi has a crazy charm and surprising good sound. I'm full Pioneer sources from 1974/75 and I'm always happy.

My first turntable was a Dual-1219 with a Pickering cart. It was considered good-value back then. I also had a Stanton 681EE and EEE on that table. In 1973 I "upgraded" to a Thornes with an SME 3009 arm. I'm still using that combination today...(after much re-build & re-furb work) Hopefully it will make it to it's 50th anniversary in 2023. My original cart was Shure V15 type III. I eventually upgraded to a Shure V-15 type V. Good replacement styli for that cart is NOT cheap today. (It used to be around $80) All the Shure hardware is now considered to be be "working rare vintage" since no new Shure carts are being made. I also owned a pair KLH-5's that I sold when I was in college. Nice hear folks (younger than me) talking about the "sound" of this equipment.

I went used, maybe not vintage. Thrones 160, Denon PMA 2000r, Elac floor stands, I was below 1000,-- and loved it. I made some upgrades since (Sonus Faber Venere S), next is a clear audio performance. But to start vintage was the optimum for me, I learned a lot and the old stuff always goes to my wife for her room so she is happy too :-)

I enjoyed your video. You mentioned some real gems. I’ve had my vintage system since the mid-1970’s - Kenwood KA-3500 integrated amplifier, Sansui SR-2050 turntable, Shure M91ED cartridge, and Dynaco A25 speakers. For fun, I checked eBay and my system can be replaced for under $1,000.

My original vintage system(new circa 1978), was the Pionner PL-540 turntable, Sony STR-V3 receiver, Sony TCK-5 tapedeck and Yamaha bookshelf Rock Monitors, 2 way. Over the years I have tried to find something similar, but no dice. Oddly the big thing for me was being spoiled by the Yamaha speakers! I have NOT been able to find their equal at the price since! I love FULL spectrum sound and these were it. I have been looking for these or equivalent online and no luck.....Now I have replace my Pioneer with the same model, gotten next level up in the receiver (STR-V4), gotten the same tape deck(nastalgia as decks have greatly improved since that one), and Nova 6 speakers, which are overlooked and underated in my opinion. Still a work in progress. And all for about $1000 Canadian including shipping.... I agree with your Pioneer amp. I have a 1991 receiver which is amazing to me. It is the Pioneer VSX-9700S, which I did have brand new when it came out, and recently purchased one for about $250. It has since gone on the fritz so it needs some work. Hopefully just caps and ressodder, but here's hoping. I was amazed at how good it sounds, but it should. It was $1300 brand new in 1991.... By the way, Paradigm is pronouned PARA DIME, like the coin....

Goldring Lenco GL75 can be lovely, if the idler is in good condition and the arms pivot bearings are intact, they dry out and go hard so may need replacing. Lots of nice old B&W speakers out there too, DM4 for example, and old Kef speaker's, Celestion, Goodmans, Mordaunt Short, so many that sounds great. Also cartridges, Shure M75, Goldring G800. This can all be great fun, especially if you can give them a little TLC, you can find some bargains and put a system together for a lot less than £1000 😃

In the US it’s probably easy to find, but you can get some nice ADS speakers for about $300 to $400. I recommend the L880s. While expensive for vintage, $250 will get you a brand new Audio Technica VM540ML cartilage, which is amazing!

Very interesting review, My vintage system consists of an Ariston RD11s turntable fitted with an Infinity Black Widow tonearm with an ADC ZLM cartridge € 580.00 my amplifier- receiver is the Sansui 441 €115.00 and loudspeakers a matched pair of Mordaunt short MS 400 floor standers €170.00 Vandamme Black studio grade speaker cables with gold plated Banana plugs €70.00, Total outlay €925.00. This system has put the smile back on my face and has that foot tapping drive to it. Vintage gear can be so much fun, again thanks for the excellent video.

@@anadialog Another excellent turntable is the Sony PS-X 600, mine has a Coral MC 81 and an AT 33 Mono LP Correctly set up this deck can easily outperform most turntables in any price range. They sell for between €350.00 to €600.00. I use this in my main system.

When I got home and looked into it I was disappointed to learn the shopkeeper tried to rip me off. He was asking for $170. They go for 75 - 100 bucks on ebay

Very nice video . Just would like to confirm how outstanding some vintage kit can be. My turntable as a case in point - the Thorens td150. My first proper turntable as a kid. Little did I realise how damned good it was! So, a succession of 'upgrades' - Rega 3, Linn LP12, Townshend Rock, all the fashions (!) and I'm back now, full circle wth the humble giant killer that is the td150. It takes a bit of effort yes, to set it up and fine tune and fettle the suspension. But oh my lord , the effort is so worthwhile! This 50 year old TT now sounds so incredibly realistic - dynamics , separation, silent backgrounds, rock solid images. Just Wow.

Good to get some focus on vintage gear. For me vintage ends somewhere between 1973 - 1977. After that amps were using ics(integrated circuits) instead of transistors. Not good soundwise but cheap. I have both the Dual 1019 and the 1229. Also the Lenco L75. The Lenco is perfect for rebuilding. If used as is, always replace the v-blocks in the arm bearing. My receiver is a Sansui 5000x with Sansui SP5500 speakers. Cartridge these days are the Ortofon anniversary 40. Looking forward to the next episodes.

I can also recommend the NAD 3120 I have one as a backup and had to use it over Christmas when a valve popped. It sounds very different to the Quad but was still pleasing to the ear

I only listen to 2 sources; Records (LPs) & CDs and last year bought a new turntable. Not vintage as it's the Rega P3 but otherwise I'm all vintage and still have my old Dual stored away in a cupboard. The only reason I upgraded was that the Dual was suffering from incessant 'screaming' which I believe was some kind of feedback. As my otherwise vintage set-up won't come in at the €1K range I'll save further comment until one of the next instalments but thanks for a very promising series and I'm looking forward to #2 & #3.

A couple of other suggestions could be 70's receivers. They sound fantastic, and can be bought for very little money with just a little patience. They also look a heck of a lot better than the Nad or Rotel. Some of them also have more watts which increases your choice in speakers. 70's Philips turntables like GA212 - 208 - 202 etc. are not very highly thought off, and can therefore be bought for almost nothing. The funny thing is that they kick the crap out of Thorens (at least in my opinion). They can be placed directly in front of the speakers turned to the max without any feed back,. They can also be placed on the floor while you dance around like a maniac without skipping due to the floating suspension. Try that with a Thorens and see what happens. They also look awesome, and sound absolutely amazing. If you're on a budget you can't go wrong with the AT95 cartridge. It also fit the impedance on many build in preamps in 70's receivers, which lift it to a level many wouldn't expect. It's not a coincidence it's called a hifi classic. When it comes to speakers, just be sure that the foam edges are okay. On old speakers they can be as rotten as .... Also be careful if you are buying speakers that has been refoamed. Not all know what they are doing, which can ruin the speakers. Many really old speakers, and newer cheap ones has a paper unit as tweeter. They are to stiff to let the fine details ring out. Word of advice: Always go for dome tweeters. The most important advices I can give is; 1. If you don't know how to check if what you wanna buy is okay. Bring someone who does. 2. Do some surfing before buying. There are people out there who thinks their junk is gold. Get a good idea about what is a fair price. Then you can make an awesome deal, and get a kick ass system for less than you think is possible. I wish you a happy and succesful hunt.

You're damn right about the Philips turn tables! I have the GA 212 and GA 213 and they are awesome, even with the original cartriges. I use them.with a Akai AA1020 and Philips AD1256 12" full range drivers in a simple open baffle. Sounds great.

@@HansJazz I love the Akai 10.. series. They are highly recommendable. At the moment I have a Sanyo DSC8000K (the top model of 74 I believe), but my next one may very well end up being an Akai. They look and sound amazing, and visually one of those babies will fit my Akai X-200D perfectly. The receiver may be changed, but as you can imagine the Philips turntables are not going anywhere. great video, i used to own a rotel amp from 1988 and i loved it. had a 90's nad amp and currently i'm using an arcam delta 120 from the early 90's and b&W dm 580 from around the same era. some brands components get along with other brands components some really don't, so to my opinion the amp/speakers part is the most important and people should start with one of them and than try to find a good match ,once they figured that part all the rest is much easier.

Cool! I'd also think about the B&W DM330i (1987). I used to have two sets of them and I really loved them! Here in the Netherlands, you can get them (restored) for 350-400 euros.. They are also regularly rebuilt and have a very nice vintage sound I think. I also recently picked up a B&O BeoCenter 2100. This has an integrated cassette deck (pretty good), but the amplifier section was remarkably good. It wasn't regarded very highly then (well, it IS an expensive brand really), so I picked it up for 10 euros! I also bought a 1978 fully restored Luxman R1500E for 450 euros. Okay, a bit more expensive, but man, it looks and sounds amazing! And I also pickup a set of free Mission 301's from the mid 90s. But the foam surround of the woofers were gone / disintegrated. So, for 25 euros, I replaced them, and they sound quite nice as well. I run them with a Squeezebox Classic (actually, the original which has better parts). That really works well! And runs Spotify. Combine it with a Topping D10S (99 euros new) and WOW.. Total second hand cost (B&O + Missions + Squeezebox + Topping + cables) was 170 euros! Turntables always seem difficult to me. Balancing them out, new oil, etc. Bearings have to still be good.. For me, a minefield unfortunately... And.. The 1019, 1219 and 1229 models are so famous here, that refurbishers are always faster than I am ;) So I went for a Thorens TD-160 (then 25 euros!) and nu TD-124. But that really is a very different pricepoint..

@@anadialog I have a system that is all made from older stuff. The turntable started as an Acos Rega Planet. I've changed to an RB250 tone arm (recently rewired by Origin Live), a glass platter, new motor, bearing and recently picked up a mission 773 MC cartridge in very good condition and a Sumiko blue point as a stand by. I have two amps. An Audiolab 8000a and a Linn Intek because I like the phono stages in them. The speakers are Heybrook HB1's. Slightly bright but very detailed and they suit my little room. I always look at older 'classic' components with a view to improving but I've sort of stopped for now as I'm satisfied... temporarily.... For now :)

NAD 3020 👍👍👍👍. Also the NAD 316 BEE any version. Combine them with inexpensive PSB from bookshelf speakers from around 2008 and you have magic floating around your listening room.

Cool video, I personnaly like to use vintage hifi and I'll wait for your next ones. My own setup in the living room: amp Marantz 4270, turntable JVC JLA 40, cassette Kenwood KX-1060 and a pair of Celestion Ditton 66 (Yes, they're WAF compliant!). The main drawback of the vintage gear, in my opinion, is its maintenance. If you are living outside a very big city you'll not find easily a tech and you'll have to learn how to do things by yourself. And I waited during all the video to see la Signora Anadialog entering in the field of the camera and grabbing you by the ear in order to help her to finish the dish washing we heard in the background. Poor of us, real life can be quite intrusive! ... :-)

I can't believe I sold my Denon DP62 TT that I bought in about 1991 with a Shure VR-V (I think) and 2 stylii. I bought the table ifor $600. I sold all in 2005 for about $500. I'd love to have that back along with my Audible Illusions Class A tube preamp. Oh, the pain...!

PRECEPT is a good high end line of cartridges by Audio Technica from the 1980s that you may want to look out for ...I bought a old belt drive Technics off of Ebay about 12 years ago and it had a Precept mounted on it , model 220 ..I never had heard of that name before but the sound it brings out is one of the best.. The table was not great though ,the motor went bad and could not find a new one but the cartridge was a great item so I took it off and used on a better table ..It made the 60 bucks well worth the price I spent getting that turntable..

Hi the epos speakers you showed were infact the epos es14 which is larger and earlier version ,the es11 were easier and less fussy on rooms position but sounded fabulous and got better as you upgraded, I've still got mine

My first (and current) setup runs around $1200 U.S. and will surprise you on the sound! Not retro but easy to aquire. A fluance rt85 turntable and a pair of Klipsch the Sixes powered book shelf speakers. Each speaker has 100 watts and a built in phono preamp its probably the easiest way to enjoy fine sounding vinyl! Also has a very small foot print!

Get a better phono preamp! Klipsch put a kludge into the Sixes and even a modest external phono stage like the U-Turn Pluto 2 ($99) or the Schiit Mani ($129) will give you much better sound.

Either way ill have to get a reciever with a phono stage or a separate preamp.ive heard bad things about the preamp in the sixes,Sixes, the sound is flat and lifeless, honestly thats not entirely true, I think the cartridge may have alot to do with how my setup sounds.it sounds nice. However its my first 2 channel setup and I admit that I haven't heard any other vinyl setups so once I hear more I may have to agree. Either way,thanks for the advice!

Grado used to have a $13.00 cartridge that was all the rage in the industry. An upgraded version is now $70.00. I had all three of the cartridges you recommended and they were nice in the time that I owned them which was many many years ago but the Grado blew them out of the water.

I bought one of those really good and cheap Grado cartridges back in the day. The current Grado Black is good but not great. A-T and Nagaoka currently make better tracking and sounding cartridges in the $100 range.

A bad cartridge might damage their records. Best to start with something like a fresh new ATVM95E.

An other great video about vintage stuff. I am happy you make these recommendations and not TechMoan because that would instantly bump up the price at e.bay. personally I think Dual is better than Lenco, you just have to compare the platters to be convinced. Be careful with turntables, I have bought about 10 different ones on-line and they all need work on them. The bad news, most of them work but there will be something wrong that makes them sound worse than they have to and sometimes you may even think it is just not such a nice sounding model. If you are on a budget, try to buy a Dual with an M44 cartridge already (or rather sill) on it. In my opinion the V15 and the Stanton EEE belong in the mid class category and not budget. And if you put a Jico Ciabatta needle ($250,-) on an M44 you have a high-ish end cartridge as far as I am concerned. My current HiFi is as follows: Dual 1009, 10 Euro and 20 hours work (I have 2 Dual 1019s but the 1009 is what I use at the moment) Shure M35 (new) 90 Euros, yes I know it is too much but I wanted it and I love the sound it makes with the Dual. Luxman L210, (2x50W integrated amp from the 80's) 130 Euro Magnat Pro-15, (very obscure model but think of the Magnat All Ribbon 5 or 6) 130 Euro So for less than 500 Euro, you can have quite good vintage sound. PS, I am thinking about upgrading the speakers with Mundorf capacitors, coils and resistors and bracing the cabinet. They already sound good but this should take them to the next level and cross overs are the weak point of every speaker, specially vintage ones. Other projects for when I have time: Marantz 5025 cassette deck, Dokorder 7100 reel to reel deck.

I agree with your choices however those are European prices. Here in Canada / US there is a humungous demand for vintage that the prices are sky high. Warning on rare equipment is that since few were made and sold, replacement parts are next to impossible to find. Especially for those monster powered receivers / amps.

Thanks, well I did extensive research and on hifishark I found the prices I presented also in dollars. Some components are hard to find in the US and that is why I put various models. Those are probably more costly as you said.

Good video (as always) but some (choose you’re own noun) are already bidding more for a NAD 3020 on eBay than it cost new. Remember, this was a budget amp, as is all equipment mentioned. . . On that note, I’d be very interested to see top recommendations for mid and high end vintage hifi components.

I like your videos and in most cases I share your opinion... but why did you skip Denon? Denon PMA320/520 and mainly 720/720A are much better than NAD 3020 for the same price. These are from 1989-91. The next models were 360/560/860/1060/1560 and a 860 can be a great deal for about 100-150 EUR. You spoke about Rotel and Pio but never Denon. I was very sad as it is my favorite brand.

Well done: This is long over due... next you need to mod and upgrade a vintage turntable!! I am going to break your request......you missed the legendary Grace F-9 cartridge( I am a B&O MMC2 MC20cl user). On the lenco L75...its a cheap idler, that as your budget increases can be upgraded to high audiophile levels.

As a long time collector, seller, trader & buyer of vintage gear, adding anything to that list after the mid 80's is ridiculous imho. I've put many vintage systems together for friends. as well. Sadly you missed out on mentioning a lot of 70's equipment that is far superior to the later models & can be bought for fairly cheap as well. Some good choices though here & there.

Great video! I agree using a vintage receiver can be a great place to start. Marantz, Pioneer and Sansui have signature sound and tone. If you have an opportunity, listen to a few to see what you like. I have experience with Sansui 441, 551, 771, Model 7, 7070 and an 8080. I kept the Model 7 through it all and use it often. Scott receivers in the 300 series can be a steal as well and they sound terrific and I use a 385R often with a modern CD transport. Vintage speakers can be a mixed bag as with anything 50 years old. I’ve been through various KLH models (6, 23 & 5), AR 2ax and several pair of Advents. I would definitely add Advents to the speaker list, they are plentiful, not more than 250$ refoamed and capped and they sound terrific with a sneaky bottom end.

Once you factor in cables and Interconnects (not any real vintage bargains there) your $1000 budget will not go far. Most vintage gear will probably need restoration to sound at its best or maybe even work at all. I think the real benefits will only become apparent in the higher budget categories.

@@anadialog A JICO HE stylus retails around £135,, alone,, add in a usable decent second hand V15, and there goes another £100+,, If your gonna fit a £35 stylus on these carts,, you may as well just buy something cheaper in the first place, as you won't unlock it's potential. Bottom line,, if you want a GOOD V15 type111 setup plan to spend around £300,, (got the T shirt my friend)

does anybody know how those vintage turntables compare to a Rega Planar 3? Mine isn't exactly "vintage", I think it is around mid 80s, I have owned it since 2014, I got it locally from a friend of a friend for 250 Euro, and it works well. But it is the only turntable I have ever owned, so I have no idea how it compares to any other turntable....nobody else I know owns a turntable to listen to :P

Yes I would go with the Rega. I guess this vid was about trying to be vintage. If you want a good HiFi for sound only then there's loads of stuff from 80s and 90s. The audiolab 8000a is a great amp for instance. Tannoy 609 or 611 speakers are great also. They'd go well with a Rega!

@@newtronix thanks, I am also more of a fan of 80s gear :p. I have recently decided to go into separate pre amplifier and power amplifier. And was actually considering the audiolab pre amplifier. One of their later models though as I saw it has a gain control dial. And my speakers are Mission Cyrus 782 which have 91.5 dB sensitivity, with my current amplifier I hardly go past 8 o'clock on the volume

I have a Shure V15 Type 5. Shure does not make replacement styluses for ANY of their cartridges anymore. www.whathifi.com/us/news/shure-to-end-phono-cartridge-business-after-86-years-production The only reasonable replacement is the Jico (which I have now). I watch eBay have haven't seen an authentic new or "used" V15 stylus offered in over 2 years (and why would you want a "used" sylus anyway?) So, unless you have a better alternative, Jico looks like where I'll be buying my styli in the future.

If you check on hifishark you will find plenty of them. A lot of people get a used cart. If it isn't completely gone it will still sound very good and will cost much much less, a very important point for many, especially young people.

You seem to have a problem with your illustrations. You showed a KLH MODEL 17 stating it was a model 6. You showed a little AR-4 saying that it was an AR-3a. There is an extreme difference between an AR-4 and an AR-3a. The AR4is a small budget speaker system. The AR3a has a 12 inch woofer, a dome mid range in the dome tweeter. It weighs in at around 50 pounds. It is drastically different speaker than in your photograph. I’m a vintage audiophile. Believe me I know. Good luck changing things around

Hi Mark, I did put a wrong picture of the A3a, the picture shows a pair of AR6 NOT AR4 as you stated while the KLH are model 6. Model 17 has a small line, like a frame, in the front. So I guess in the end you don't really know. ;-)

The NAD 3020's price keeps creeping up,, but a cheaper alternative that slips under the radar is the 7020 receiver - it's a 3020 and a 4020 tuner in one box. I'd also recommend looking out for Luxman's entry-level amps - the L-1, L-2, L-113A and L-114A - which often go for $150-250. They hit a sweet spot for both warmth and detail. A word of caution about vintage AR speakers: the foam surrounds on the woofers are almost always perished, so you need to factor in the cost and time of replacing them. This also applies to a lot of other vintage speakers with foam surrounds.
