I'm from Badagry an Ogu Man. In Gungbe/Fongbe/Ewegbe we call all Yorubas Anagonu while the language is Anagogbe. Yoruba is much newer word cos all other Ethnicity to the West call Yorubas Anago/Nago/Anagonu etc. In fact there is also Ayonu (someone from Oyo). It seems that historically there will have been distinction bttw the Anagos & Ayonu cos Old Oyo was controlling vast land areas as they were the ruling class.

In Ghana, the Yoruba were called 'Alata' and 'Anago'. But the people of Accra, Ghana's capital, the Ga people, were themselves a part of the Yoruba. Their Ga language is close to Yoruba and in recent times they easily picked up speaking Yoruba, before 'Ghana must go',; compared to other Ghanaian groups. I believe they were the origin of the Yoruba today calling Ghanaians 'Ageni'. They were the same blood.

Originally, we're Ikedu and Ikedu speakers from our cradle or source Ule-Ufe, which was formally Ugbomokun. But, as the people migrate or spread out of Ule-Ufe, Ikedu started charging forms into what each clan speaks now, like Anago, Olukunmi, Ijesa, etc. Infact, Oyo is a contemporary or modern Ikedu language, which is used in our written form, in Nigeria, somehow, influenced by the English alphabets.

This is not entirely correct. Ule ife of Ugbomekun spoke ikedun quite alright, but there was a change in ancient Ile ife language when Oduduwa clan arrived with another dialect classified as edekiri, it was ikedun and edekiri that fused together to create different dialects we have today with Edekiri been the dominant, that’s why the only place you can find ikedun is Ondo and Ekiti area where Ugbo people migrated to after they were pushed out by Oranmiyan

It is one thing to revisit history to identify a group and its origin. Still, it is important to understand why evolving patterns of human groupings exist. The Yoruba territory was split between Nigeria and Benin based on territories that were under Dahomey empire at the time of its defeat to the French in 1894. After the fall of Oyo empire in early 1800's, rising Dahomey empire raided and incorporated the Yoruba towns in present-day Benin under its vasal. By the time of the last French-Dahomey war in 1894, the French and British finalized the border based on the dominant empire's influence which permanently split Yoruba territory into two countries. Similar to the way the British included Ilorin and some other edge Yoruba towns as part of Northern Nigeria protectorate because they were seen as Fulani/Northern Territories. Its worthy to also note that if Abeokuta had fallen to Dahomey during the Dahomey-Egba war of 1850 thereabout, Abeokuta would also have become part of Benin Republic.

@@OlumightyLoveth IGBOs in the current day Nigeria originated from the Bantus of the Congo basin. DNA will likely prove me correct. The Other northern tribes are part of the Kanuri/Chad, Sahel and Desert people looking for greener pasture heading towards the the lush of the south by the Atlantic ocean. But YORUBA had dominated the areas (from Ghana to Benin and the Delta) for thousands of years before the calamity that befell the Sahara turning into desert and the intrusion of Colonial powers and their trickery later on. However, before the amalgamation of north and south in Nigeria, YORUBA was a sovereign nation and they never allowed Hausas nor IGBOs into her territory. With British lust for power, it changed all that and we are all suffering from it till today.

@@OlumightyLoveth Most of the towns in Ogho areas has their own history. I'm from both Imoru and Ifon in Ondo State. From my primary school history class, from oral history and the traditions from elders, we were or some of us were descendants of Oranyan who were part of the old Benin Empire. Some also were descendants of OBATALA, Ogun, Obaluaye that settled in this areas. So also I believed is the history of Owo (Ogho). We are 100% true YORUBA to the core from Ile-Ife and Benin the first YORUBA Empire!

Bonjour. 😇

I dislike if yoruba is telling yoruba that he or she doen't speak good yoruba. It's people from Lagos (Eko) who always show that supremacy.. Remember that yoruba language is divided in sooo many dialets, it's according to the village, city or country! The question is: wich yoruba language is the best?!on my opinion, no yoruba language is better than others !!

I think you are on course. Anago like words like Naga, Nege and similar names. I actually believe the later two, which are similar to Anago, are origin of the term Negro. Because Europeans play around with letters in words to generate new words. Sometimes to hide information. So, Anago to Negro make sense.

Anago does not in any way mean Negro. The term Negro dates back to thousands of years before Europeans encounter with the Yoruba speakers in West Africa. Negro, Niggar, Niger, and many other derivatives stem from one root word with Greek and Roman origins
