Here are a few segments of mostly un-edited downhills that I shot while riding my recumbent trike (Catrike Road) down some of the roads in Anaheim Hills (Peralta hills) in Anaheim California.

Great video Glenn! I bet it takes just a little longer to get to the top of those rides than it does to get down :) Its the only problem with great downhills, having to do the uphill part too :)

Yeah - it flashes by pretty fast at 41 mph - lol - but I was able to see the Trucks Maximum stuff. I would be scared to go that fast on my scorpion - sit too high/upright. I need to get a Catrike instead.

That part of the ride... the downhill in the video was a drop of about 300 feet over about 7 tenths of a mile... nothing really over 9 or 10 % grade although some parts of it might vary. as you saw most of it was at 40 ish MPH and the one little spot after that one street where I hit 50 might have had a small dramatic drop that pushed me up another 5 or 10 mph for that section. ;-)

Yes, I used to ride a Terratrike Tour. Currently a Catrike Road. They are both good trikes but I do consider the catrike an upgrade from the TT. The Catrike is more laid bake seat angle, lower, steering is tighter (more like a sports car than the steering on the TT). Ride might be a little more rough (like a sports car) on the catrike too... but I like the feel of it. Both are good trikes for what they do. the TT was a good starter for me because of price, but I love the Catrike!

HA! ok... I will give you 12 mph handicap... gives you a little wiggle room. Yeah, I don't think I would want to ride a velo downhill as my first try! Does it give you room to lean right and left for weight shifting or are you pretty much in your seat shoulders to the walls?

I have only done the north side of Imperial downhill once. It is fast... but there are so many lights and cross streets there now... I did not really like it. a little scary. So usually I only go UP Imperial. ;-) Cannon on the other side is nicer for the roll down.

Trikes are faster than bikes. I had a recumbent bike at 50 years old that wld easily passed the racers, who believe me didn't like it all. My max speed was 39 mph, but just TRY to get a racer over 32--can't be done. And I'd pull up at a light and tell them, "I'm 50 years old!" They were not generous about that. Then they'd say, "but they can't climb." For me and my bicycle, that was true. But as I'm walking my bike up hill in Maine, I'd look BACK at them trying to crank their bikes up hill an eighth of of a mile away. If they didn't feel like idiots, they should have. --Rocket Scientist

yeah I had to go back and look at it again... not to say there are not other speed signs that I pass where I am not exceeding the limit ... a little. ;-) but I do try to stay with the flow of traffic speed if there are other cars. ;-)

20 MPH? That means 70+ MPH, OUCH! I've hit 66 MPH before, but that's scary fast on a trike! Obviously I'm a wimp. :) Sure, you can borrow sometime, but not for downhill speed records until you learn how the Velo handles in the wind. On the SART, no problem at all.

Hi! Very amazing video hehehe, this trike was corner hard well??? I am looking for a change mi old KMX tornado F7 with schlumf hsd for an trike faster... I commute every day 15km house-work-house with flats and hills, my average speed is 20-21km/h (the same as a mountain bike whit all round road tyres)... But trike is much more fun and comfortable... Researching for a change I see interesting a catrike speed and road(unsuspended) for the lightweight(I up to house by stairs jejeje)... The speed is comfortable and valid for commuting? The road is stable and corner as hard as KMX??? Wath is the overall difference in average speed to an KMX to an catrike???
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes I commute on my Catrike Road about the same distances and speed you do. I have never ridden a KMX trike but the Catrike is lightweight and corners well. Because it is lighter, it might require more lean in to the corners and more brake on the inside wheel to stay in corners but I like mine and it handles well when I lean in at speed.

@@TrikeSquadron I recently bought an ICE Adventure HD 26 with no motor, no suspension, and after over 20 years of riding "ordinary" bicycles I was still amazed at what I could do with low gears (it has 30). However, I do not think I would - or could - climb the hills you rode down. I would need a motor for that. Maybe some day, or some day I will be strong enough to do it without a motor. Thanks for the video and the replies.

You are crazy man. What happens when a car, truck or dog darts in front of you going at that speed????? That aside, I noticed you have shifter on the ends of your hand bars/grips and also have found a way to mount your rearview mirrors. How do they attach and where did you purchase them if you don't mind me asking. Ride safe.
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 10 жыл бұрын
Well, all you can do is be as visible as possible. I have front and rear 400 lumen daylight bright flashers on, I ride in the center of the right lane so that I am not hidden my side of the road clutter and have room to take evasive action (not pinned against the curb). Also have an airhorn to warn off dogs and drivers alike. but yeah... there are no guarantees. As to the mirrors: they are attached to mountain bike handle extensions connected to the bottom of the handles near where the brake handles are attached. see here for an overview of my accessories and how they are attached... kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYXKiKhmppaJaJYm25s

Where's the traffic? I would be concerned some car would pull into the intersection not expecting to see a tri-bike, especially at those speeds. Brave or dumb?
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 6 жыл бұрын
Neither brave or dumb. I ride to be a part of "traffic", positioning my vehicle so other drivers will best see me - as the vehicle code states I should. When it is safe for me to safely share the right lane with another vehicle I do that. When it is not safe to be too far right with no safe passing space in the lane because of lane width, debris in the street or speeds, I use the full lane as allowed by the law. I also choose to ride in areas and at times when motor traffic is lighter. So.. it is neither brave nor dumb, it is being smart and following the laws of the road.
@lorik.6669
@lorik.6669 6 жыл бұрын
Dregerclock, You're missing the point, how can one stop a tri-bike at those speeds (30-50 mph) fast and safely enough if someone pulls out and not expecting to see a trike with much less visual mass and the rider with virtually no body/brain protection? I'd be conservative in a car too. I've done a lot of urban and countryside touring and with a fast bike (top of the line Gary Klein custom frame bike with all "jewelry"). ???
@lorik.6669
@lorik.6669 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with all your riding approach, it's all about appropriate speed for traffic and location. Not lanes etc. The tri rider was all over the place and way too fast to avoid possible disaster. You follow safe traffic riding at controlled speed. A totally different situation.
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your concerns. But I think you dont understand the stopping ability of the trike. I have test emergency stopped it and the wide angle camera is also probably giving a different impression of things than it is in real life. Ride safe.
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 6 жыл бұрын
Visibility, stopping power and stability are all better on a trike than on an upright bike. I have ridden down hills on bike and been at only about 26 mph and felt like I had no way to stop or turn, not to mention visibility with my head pointed down more than forward. the Trike is a MUCH more stable and safe platform for downhills and any bike.

50 is pretty quick but I've gone faster (a little bit) on shorter hills on my regular road bike. Were you on the brakes? I've never ridden recumbent but I'd have thought the aero advantage would have you going faster than that.
@TrikeSquadron
@TrikeSquadron 9 жыл бұрын
+cockedcap If you have done 50+ on a road bike downhill then you are braver than I. 30ish on an upright bike for me is more than I care for. on the Trike I still felt in control. and no I was not on my brakes. :-P
