Also known as the Hayden Manoeuvre. From what I have heard in other videos, Hayden saw a stuntman doing it, so he decided to learn it, and now it is Anakin's signature move.

I am a sword fighter, the funny thing is that most people consider twirling useless in a sword fight but there is a hidden utility behind it. Twirling a sword allows you to change your stance and your tactics while remaining in motions as well as making it hard for your opponents to predict your next move. The only thing is it presents a risk because if you twirl for too long, then you may leave yourself open.

Plus, with a lightsaber the weight will be much less of a problem, allowing for much greater control, while every point of contact is potentially deadly to the opposite, vs any bladed weapon. Much more similar to a flail in utility, with the precision and control of a sword.

I learnt about this in fencing - 'spinning' is actually an aggressive tactic. It's kinda harder to pull out to block, but if you're being *very* aggressive, you're basically winding up to strike/lunge, and it forces your opponent to retreat and try to block. It's slightly-higher-risk/quite-high-reward. It fits *perfectly* for Anakin, who definitely believes the best defence is a good offense.

You know, turning around and facing away from your opponent is usually a terrible move, hence why spinning around seem mostly unnecessary and done because it looks cool... HOWEVER, Anakin protects his back WHILE spinning around, meaning he's actually incorporating spinning into a useful measure. It's not without reason why the Prequels and shows like Ahsoka or Obi-Wan Kenobi has excellent fight choreography. Hayden and Ewan are actually trained in sword combat.

One must imagine just how fucking bitter Vader must have been that he probably couldn't do this move anymore. Between the cape, the restrictive nature of the suit, and the sheer damage to his body, Vader could never again have that free flowing motion he had as Anakin. Everything has to be economical just to fit within his body's new limits. For a former slave, who only felt free when he got to be in motion either in a vehicle or just by moving through the force, being so utterly restricted by his own body must have been such utter hell.

My headcanon explanation for this move is Anakin uses it as a show of disrespect/bravado while dueling. He's essentially conveying the fact that his technique is so superior to his opponent he can even turn his back to them and remain safe.

Nick Gillard, the stunt corrdinator of the PT, is a real life Jedi Master. He personally worked with every single actor playing a Jedi, even the "minor" characters with only a few seconds of on screen action, to develop fighting styles that suited their personalities and physical characteristics. That's why all the Jedi of the PT are so memorable and iconic. It's fun to watch the Battle of Geonosis and just focus on all the background action, there's a ton of cool stunts going on.

I suppose an opponent of his could realize where his back is exposed in the motion, but I feel like this is really cool the move does two things: 1 covers his back despite its appearance, and 2 it almost mirrors Grievous style of blade spinning for the intimidation factor, or to make the opponent uncertain of where the strike will be. Cool stuff, haydens the goat

0:57 people always clown on this but I think they don't really get the idea. For the exchanges prior they were doing similar movements but were attacking and blocking at every point perfectly. So for two experienced force users, it's not hard to imagine this extended flourish in striking distance was an attempt by both of them to bait out a block in order strike somewhere undefended.

You know a lot of people say the spin is useless but actually if you pay attention to most times he uses it, the move is actually timed and the best times for its use, can trip up the defender and shift and push the saber and weight of the defender bringing them off balance showing that the move actually does has great use but only if it is being used by a master of offense which fits the chosen one very well

So, the "Hayden Maneuver" is _almost_ a potentially viable tech. Twirling is typically an awkward thing to do in a swordfight - there are uses to it such as remaining in motion during a stance change but you don't want to spend _that_ much time doing it.
