Even though I love BOSS pedals, I never cared much for the DS-1 Distortion. However, about 2 months ago, I came across an early 2000's DS-1, (in the box with all the box candy!!), at a yard sale for $25. I was thrilled when I opened the box and it had the Analogman sticker on it! I truly love this pedal! It has waaaaay more mid range to it now. It is a mainstay on my board. Side note: at that very same yard sale, I ended up with a mid-2000's EHX Small Clone, a Digitech Bad Monkey, (better than I thought it would be!), a Line 6 Roto Machine, and finally, the star of the show: a 1982 BOSS CE-2 Chorus in MINT condition, also with the box and candy!!! I gave $115 for everything, (including the $25 for the DS-1). I'll never stumble on a deal like that again...

Mike is a kick-ass dude who makes kick-ass pedals and waiting 17 months for my King of Tone was well worth it. It is not over-priced (unless you find a gouger on ebay/Reverb) and, much like the Klon, it's not Mike who is responsible for the stupid resale pricing. I say, get on the list and then just go about your life until you get your email!

His personality and customer service, overrated (he's no where near as friendly or patient as he's often made out to be. I'm not saying he HAS to be, I'm just saying). His pedals, also overrated. They're not "bad" by any stretch, some are really excellent. Particularly his modded Boss and Maxon pedals and the KOT. I'm just saying they're just overrated, over mythologized. I own and have owned at least 1,000 pedals over the last 25+ years. His fuzzes have nothing on builders like Pigdog, Castledine and D*A*M and certainly aren't as sturdily built. Of the about 50 Analogman pedals (including modded pedals) I've had at least a quarter of them have janky footswitches, shitty solder joints and need to be repaired within a year or two. At times alot of stuff gets built in a pretty slapdash manner because he's backed up on orders. Getting back to his Sun Faces, printed circuit board fuzzes will never sounds as good as point to point hand wired. So and so said different? They're wrong and they likely sell pedals with printed circuit boards. This is not to "slag" Analogman at all even though I probably come off like a prick. His pedals sound really good and his website is a fantastic resource. It's just to say that people need to chill because his "legend" has been blown up like a fun house jumper.

"Boutique" generally refers to selective use of materials so as to achieve some desired end-product that is optimal in some way, or simply tailored to a customer. Some might consider it equivalent to "bespoke" at times; essentially the difference between a suit provided by a tailor, compared to off-the-rack from K-Mart. Insomuch as Mike makes use of germanium transistors and other selected components at times, it's fair to consider his pedals as "boutique".
@steverherb
@steverherb 4 жыл бұрын
Very true. For example, Mike uses NOS BBD delay chips in his chorus pedals. You can then choose from several models and further customize them.
@markhammer643
@markhammer643 4 жыл бұрын
@@steverherb I suspect he has probably moved beyond that, since many things that were unavailable *except* as NOS for a number of years, have been resurrected. But yes, there was a lengthy period during which NOS BBDs were pretty much your ONLY choice for some things. One always needs to keep in mind that manufacturers have to factor in the availability and sustainability of the materials required for a given product, before launching it. One can probably rely on being able to source NOS germanium transistors or BBDs, power tubes or rare woods, if the objective is to produce maybe a few hundred pedals, amps, or guitars during the total lifespan of the product line. But if the goal is producing thousands to ship off to every music store world-wide, and send as freebies to every KZbin reviewer out there, NOS *anything* is going to be nigh impossible to sustain. You will never see Boss using germanium transistors unless they buy a factory that used to make them and resurrect production. Their volume needs are simply too large. They would never release a product that they only anticipate ever making and selling 300 of, unless it was a $5000 synth.. Mike has the advantage of being small. Sometimes being "boutique" lets you get away with things that major manufacturers are thoroughly capable of doing, technically, but unable to produce in the quantities expected. If you have the chance, read up on what happened to Electro-Harmonix when Mike Matthews found he was being blocked from sourcing Panasonic BBDs he needed for his flagship Memory Man pedal, some 30 years back.

"Tyler" has always been my favorite too. In my area of western MA the local "modern rock" radio station started playing "BAckslider" before any of the other singles from that record and my friends and I all fell in love with the band. At the end of my first guitar lesson my teacher told me to come in next time with a song I wanted to learn, so I came in next weekend asking him to teach me "Backslider" and I can still remember him listening to the opening riff one time and then playing it. I was blown away that he could do that and I never forgot that feeling. At that time my mother, who had become a born again Christian a few years before this, was having issues with some of the people at the church we were going to and this song came on in the car one day and me, not knowing what a Backslider was, started turning it up. After it was finished she told me what it meant and that it applied to her etc etc. That whole record had such a tremendous impact on me during that time in my life and it was a nice surprise to see it mentioned here out of the blue like. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Edit: grammer

My favorite definition of boutique was uttered by Analogue man himself, and I'm paraphrasing but...it's that the designer is making the choices for you. He thinks it sounds good like this, so rather than substitute a resistor with a pot and let you decide, he does the work of finding the sound and it's just done. It's easy to use and it sounds...not great but ...perfect. As the designer thinks of that pedal, it's perfect. Boutique isn't a lot of knobs so you can tweek all day, it's done for you in the vision of the designer. Experimental however is when yes, go nuts with the knobs. So...is Dr. Scientist boutique? That's the question. Is Snazzy Effects? IS LOVETONE???? ANSWER ME JOSH!!!!!! Is JHS?

The Beano Boost is one of those must have pedals. Doubly so if you're using a 60s style British amp. Marshalls, Voxes, Laneys. They can all get very dark and muddy when pushed into overdrive. Even more so with a fuzz doing its thing. The Rangemaster was invented to bring a little brightness back. So having that in a very pedal board friendly package is just nice.

Im from Dallas, and have always held up Darrel Herbert as one of the most raunchy yet beautiful guitar players of the time. Who doesnt love a locking nut fender

One of the best records ever recorded! Tyler is definitely the stand out tracks for me. Graduated high school in 95 and this was the soundtrack to my summer and still a favorite. 🖤

Love that Toadies album. Friends and I regularly karaoke tunes off it. Also, I've been playing guitar for 23 years and have never really been into pedals... Used my amp gain or an mxr od and nothing else for years... Until I started watching this channel. Now I have many pedals, including some JHS, and am always on the hunt for more. Thanks for expanding my guitar tone world, JHS!

I met my best friend during my senior year of high school when he was a freshman. Years later, I traveled home to see him graduate, and the first song we played after the long wait was "Possum Kingdom". Absolutely ruled.

Analog Man has some great pedals. I'll definitely check his gear out. I love that first Toadies album. My two favorite songs from 'Possum Kingdom' are 'Backslider' and 'Happy Face.' They're so guttural and yet groovy. I love the lyrics to 'Happy Face' 'cause it all deals with fighting back against tormentors. 'Tyler' is also great, especially with that siren-style playing at the open. And that final track, 'I Burn,' is phenomenal. It's a shame that The Toadies had so many problems, they could've been huge had they made more records in the 90's. But hey, we got some great stuff in the 2000's, so it's not all lost. If you haven't heard their other records, Josh, you should check them out. Especially 2017's 'The Lower Side Of Uptown.' It's a great Rock album.

RECORD TIME! Rubberneck is an album that ruled my world for more than a minute. In constant rotation in my car's cassette deck, it was the perfect soundtrack for driving fast in my early twenties. The guitar tones blew me away, in a time before the internet really caught on, I was obsessed with trying to recreate this sound. On a thin budget, it wasn't really possible on small, solid-state combos and Sound Tank pedals. But we made due. I remember the Toadies were opening for Corrosion of Conformity (?!) at a club in Boston. My friends and I took the train into the city for the show. They took the stage and immediately blew our hair back. Rocked so hard. When the set was done, we realized we had to run to the station to catch the last train out (train service did not run very late then). So we missed COC completely, which was a real bummer. But of all the shows I've attended, this was probably the most enthusiastically rocking one. They were having a blast playing this material, and we were eating it up. Good to see I'm not the only one carrying the love for Rubberneck!

Record Time was on point today. I lived in Dallas and played a lot of shows in the area in the early to mid 90s and saw the Toadies many times. One NYE show, Vaden had been in the hospital with pneumonia all day and he still came out and played the show that night, hooked up to an IV if I recall. They kicked ass as always. Dallas had such a great music scene then. Tripping Daisy, UFOFU, Rev. Horton Heat, Hagfish, Chomsky and of course, the Toadies. Good times!

I’m always conflicted, I’m sad Josh doesn’t have all the pedals but I’m also always excited to hear the “I don’t have this pedal” jingle. It’s a real moral dilemma.
