Most of serious mastering facilities we use the signal unbalance balance most for mixing and recording, but still not plug ins to replace a germanium analog sound or optical compressor in the Eq and limiter field are some good algorithms plugins but can be more precise but not provide the texture of the analog gear, good luck in your new journey when the spirit call, not way to be denial nice informative video for those need some gear

Wonderful video and beautiful gear. Can the 8 channels of summing in the Heritage Audio MCM-8 ii be used completely separately from the 500 series units? I want to sum my 8track reel to reel but want my 500 units separate, they just need a power supply. Just wondering how to routing works, whether I can use the 500 series ins and outs in my patchbay outside of the final stereo out on the mcm-8. Your insight would be really appreciated!
@cavemanmasters3 жыл бұрын
Dan my man appreciate u for the love and support 🙇🏻♂️🙏🏼♥️ the mcm8 ii has 2 bypass/engage buttons per channel...first button is to turn that channel on/off, second button is to insert/bypass the 500 series unit in that channel slot. hope that helps! feel free to ask any more questions you may have, i love answering these ⭐️⭐️⭐️
@cavemanmasters3 жыл бұрын
in your particular case, for strictly MCM summing you will have to engage all the channel "on" switches (white button) but have all the 500 series switches "out" (red button) then you would just XLR in/out the powered 500 units in the back and then use DB25 breakouts (or the L/R aux) for the summing. 🤓💯
@GoLongboardBroseph3 жыл бұрын
@@cavemanmasters Thanks so much for the help and quickness! That pretty much answers what I wanted to know. I assume that you can't use the summing part and the 500 series separately at the same time. I just want to be able to use the 500 units when I'm not using the summing mixer (for example, if I am tracking vocals into my DAW through 500 series pres/eqs/comps).

Are you using Fab Filter Plugs in your mastering chain now or something better? I tend to use Pro L and Slate mastering plug and try to get my mixes right so i can keep the master simple. I have to go deeper with things I didn’t mix
@cavemanmasters2 жыл бұрын
Yuba Sun my friend, so so sorry i missed this comment for such a long time 😭 i have used the fabfilter limiter since their first pro L (using pro L2 these days) and to this day Pro L2 is still an industry recognized standard worldwide. when pushing extra hard and i'm losing dynamics...sometimes i would put slate fg-x before my final limiter and use the knobs to get abit more low end knock and definition without losing volume (shhh secret sauce) 👺🤘🏼⚡️ but always remember, every incredible master ALWAYS starts with an amazing mix 💯 that law has not changed since the beginning of time.

I’d sure like to see a video where you use that gear on a project. It sounds like you really know what you’re doing! It looks cool separated by the little pillars, but man I’d be really nervous about having close to 30k worth of gear stacked in a tower that could fall.. cus I know that I’d get drunk one night & start appreciating the way the gear looks all lit up & bring down the tower. I have heritage audio mcm MkI. It’s apparently a line mixer, not an actual analog summing unit, according to dangerous audio anyway. Anyway, I dig mine. I use the aux in & out for the transformer at the end of the line mixer, run everything that I can through it for warmth.
@cavemanmasters3 жыл бұрын
uh oh....i think maybe dangerous audio forgot to read the manual for the mcm 😅 (they even include a circuit diagram) from the official heritage audio mcm manual: "The mixer follows a passive voltage summing topology, having the gain loss restored by a classic ́73 type class A output stage."
@justinupchurch17733 жыл бұрын
@@cavemanmasters yeah, apparently it’s passive summing, requiring the gain stage at the end of circuit to bring levels back up or something like that & the dangerous is active summing, illuminating the need for all that. Anyhow, from watching other videos, I see that you have a d-box also. Which do you prefer?
@cavemanmasters3 жыл бұрын
@@justinupchurch1773 yessir! i had both for different reasons, i used to work as a console tech so i know large format desks inside out. i eventually went with dangerous because i can do a lot more with clean signal, anything emulating a neve-specific circuit is going for character/tone...which is sometimes too specific and not always flexible to work with! i find the dangerous safer, for the genre's i work in have heavy bass. neve is colourful and will fold the subs abit too much sometimes it can even slow the speed of transients if you're not careful!! 👆🏼👀
@audiokemestry4 жыл бұрын
great review and details about your gear. what are you using as your mid/side encoder? I guess I must have missed that part. also, have you noticed that the headroom is significantly lower when using the unbalanced outs on your massive passive? I picked up an MP earlier this year and i've been using the unbalanced outputs (which bypasses the transformers) pretty frequently on projects---its a whole other world indeed. but i definitely can't push the MP as hard when using the unbalanced outs.
@cavemanmasters4 жыл бұрын
thank you for watching! 🙏🏼👹 currently i'm just using logic's I/O utility for MS. i agree with you about the reduced "headroom" when using Massivo unbalanced connectors, the hysteresis and soft clipping in the xformers definitely contribute to some increased headroom and perceived loudness. i also find the sweet spot is wider when pushing into them (xformers), more feeling but less precise. i'm usually only working within 1-3db range though (mastering) so i don't really run into the headroom issue as much. hope that helps and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any additional questions or comments! 👹

Thanks for the Video. Holy Moly all that amazing Gear 😳 I do have a question about your Sidechain technique you showed us with your Massive Passive and the Dangerous Compressor. So, you talked about how much you love the sound of the Massivo…but a bit later you told us that your 500 Series Rack‘s Output is hitting the Dangerous Compressor Input very hard. Then you talked about boosting the Bands of your Massive Passive extremely hard. That means that the Massive Passive was just for the purpose of eq‘ing into the Sidechain ..? (with a Split Signal?) I wonder because ..if so you wouldn’t hear any direct Sound from the Manley right 💁🏻♂️ ? or did you Monitor the Sidechain Input while boosting? Sorry I am confused 😕 Thank you very much for answering and for teaching us these techniques. I hope you are doing fine Bro, i would appreciate upcoming Videos very much ✌️best wishes
@cavemanmasters Жыл бұрын
Blesss fam for the love 👺🙏🏼 I really appreciate it! yes once the massivo is inserted into the dangerous sidechain input, you don’t get the sound of the tubes anymore. With this sidechain method, I am mainly using the unique curves on the massivo eq to control the behaviour of the dangerous compressor. Of course there are times I just run stuff through the massivo without patching into any side chains for the beautiful clear tube colouration.
@thepanicroommastering2062 Жыл бұрын
Oh wow ok, that is by far the most expensive Sidechain EQ i‘ve ever heard 😋 Couldn’t imagine, but now it makes sense because you said „the curves of the Massivo are so musical“ Thank you so much for clarification & your fast response Brother. Blessings upon you 🙏🏻✨

@cavemanmasters3 жыл бұрын
yooo that's actually a fire question 🙇🏻♂️🔥 no amount of equipment is going to make a mediocre song sound good, i will pick the good song and master it in garageband over the mediocre song. it all starts with taking the extra time to select good samples, capture quality recordings, and a great mix. that way, you can leave it as is or "crush" it as hard as you want and it'll still sound good at the end of the day 👺🙏🏼💯
