Reuben Cohen demonstrates how one move influences the whole chain when having a series of processes working together. EQing into compression plays a key role in the mastering process. This idea applies to both the analog and the digital realm.

Hi there … first and foremost, your plugin is great! Second, I truly appreciate the responsibility and honesty to name your presets as a “starting point” unlike CL_ who says that if one uses his plugin and preset, this one will get the “flavor” of his mixes! Poor beginners! Not you! Just sharing your knowledge without ego. Kudos, guys! Now on to this mastering … I truly appreciate your approach of “like I was not there” and preserving the intention of the original mix. On this one though, what takes my ears off of the voice are the guitars on the L/R. While I could consider that the mixing engineer/producer wanted the voice buried in, when you compare it to the level of the guitar solo towards the end, it just confirms to me that, IMHO, it needed some attention. While the approach of the 6K etc does bring the voice out, it also brings the guitars out with it. This could easily be tweaked with a mid-side processing, using the same philosophy. With that, I would love to see a mid-side module in the plugin. I think it would really complete the package. Maybe I just haven’t spent time with the plugin yet and one of the modules offers mid-side processing. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Thanks again for sharing great knowledge and technique! Cheers!

This is truly inspirational and considering you're style and performance there, I have to look at this from a different perspective. Coming from someone whom spent 30 odd years as a DJ I can relate to your technique but as much as you just sold me that Console, I would like some info on how you learned to Mix to get you to the level you're at. Much respect is due here, Mixing needs to be recognised as an Expressive instrument in these such Projects and lets not forget that!!! I see too many Performances nowadays in which the so called Professional Mastering Engineers don't have a clue. Thanks and now i Subscribe!!!

Welcome to the arena! Just curious, do you still Dj? Also what EQ do you use for mastering? I’m interested in the EAR 825 but 12.5k is 😨

I have a pair of Ear 822Q, although it's not nearly as impressive as a Pultec. For mastering it is more versatile and the high frequencies are more beautiful and smooth.

Cool video! Nice mastering! Wouldnt you think the kick could have been mixed a little bit softer in the mix (less apparent) and also the bass could have been a db or half louder? Then the mastering would have been totally different.

Great video. So how wide is the Q on this Lursen mastering EQ (how wide is the curve, shape ...) so that gives that perfect sound and 3KHZ influences with crossover frequencies 60 HZ and 6KHZ 120HZ? I wan't to replicate the same "curves" (Q settings) on different mastering EQ's, so I don't go too wide or too narrow ... I like Lursen mastering console stand alone plugin , but there's no info about crossover frequencies and shapes of the Q on 60 120 3 6 and 10KHZ ... I know it's reverse smiley concept that is top notch but what are the specifics of that smiley face? 60 and 10 khz form (I'm guessing) downward slope shape curve, 120 is how much Q wide bell, shape, 3 khz etc. ? if you can answer that it would be great. Everything else is known, this is still an enigma, haha

Rueben you talk about listening flat. Is that relative to your system or is there a standard way of measuring “flat”? I recent was told I should have my room tuned so I’m getting into a whole new arena in acoustics. It’s all like 🤯

Relative to your system. Is more about keeping your listening environment consistent and diminishing the amount of variables when listening.

Awesome content! Cheers guys. Question, when you add either compressor in the chain to push in too, do you not engage the side chain filter or do you so the low end doesn’t trigger the comp?

I’m curious what it actually means when you say boosting 3k, 6k is also cutting 60, 120. Is this just because those frequencies are occupying more of the dynamic range, or is there an actual cutting of the low frequencies because of how the eq is designed?

First thing I would is get rid of the card board bass drum and tighten it up. I'm not sure how you are sharing the audio over the internet. I might not be as negative if it were shared in a different fashion. Very important to make quick changes so you don't loose your thought. I did notice the track starting to really groove near the end. Looks like your approach worked ot well afterall. Nice job and that's why people pay you all the big bucks. Thanks for sharing!
