I recently went on a business trip to New York City and had some off time in between workshops and meetings to take some photographs. I chose to only pack two rolls of film and the Pentax 17 for this trip. I also did a vacation trip to Tokyo right afterwards and what did I pack? The Pentax 17 among some other cameras.
The Pentax 17 had been released in June 2024. With six months' distance and some fresh images at hand, I think it is a good opportunity to share some additional thoughts to complement my original 38 minute review. If you haven’t seen that, please go back and watch this first. Why another video? Because I still believe that we as a film community are not giving Pentax all the credit it deserves for introducing this completely newly developed camera.
I shot Kodak ProImage 100 and Ilford Delta 400 in New York and really took the Pentax 17 through its paces using it to capture parts of the Veterans Day parade on 5th avenue, the onset of dawn which required the use of flash and the bright early morning sunrise, sometimes shooting directly into the sun. In Tokyo, I mostly shot Kodak Gold 200 rated at ISO 160 and carried it with me throughout the day and evening. I captured lots of street shots and how Tokyo’s architecture meets traditional Shinto shrines for instance.
The variety of images nicely illustrates what this little camera is capable of. The films were developed and scanned by my trusted On Film Lab based in Frankfurt and I can highly recommend you giving them a try. Let’s take a look at some of the images and my findings.

Excellent! As a 76 year old photographer, It really exasperated me to see this camera written off as a "beginner" film camera. The level of control available is really awesome; just not in the f-stop and shutter speed terms we are used to. But it is all there IF you understand the mode dial. I loved this camera from day one and it has only grown on (and with) me since.

What a timely video for me. I took my Pentax 17 to Chicago and took 2 rolls of film with it. I had not received the film back before I had another trip to Las Vegas, and did not take the Pentax 17 there. WELL…I was missing not having it terribly. I missed the weight and ease of use as I wandered the streets of Las Vegas both day and night. I am never leaving it behind again. My consolation was I brought a Ricoh GR1V which was also fun to shoot but as a used camera which I paid 2x versus the Pentax 17, and not repairable.

Your images are impressive. I am currently fighting the urge to buy the Pentax 17. I don't need another camera...I really don't. But I like cameras that force me to change my shooting process and there are enough different features and quirks to this camera what would make me slow down and think. I'm glad you addressed the shutter speed. My Yashica A has a top shutter speed of 1/300 of a second. This does require thought on carefully selecting film speed and overall though on lighting and settings. I saw one Pentax 17 review that suggested the camera was defective because of issues of image blur.

Thanks. Great summary of this camera. It is not something that's supper collectible or a stsus symbol, it is just camera that's there to be with you. Easy to take, easy to shot and gives great results. I shot both film and digital and I always have this little companion close with some nice film loaded. Often take it to museum where I know I can use flash or just take with me to shot for sake of shooting and playing. 72 exposures make it possible to just snap away happily. I shot few rolls of Ektar 100 with it and it is crazy how sharp this lens is and how good exposure meter is working. Even the half frame image quality has not hindered me as I ordered biggest prints my local lab can make and all was nice, sharp, no degradation. Same with flesh and Ferrania 50 that I used inside old steam locomotive and that camera was able to handle it brilliantly.

Max, I wanted to tell you how much I truly enjoyed the photographs you showed in this video! The street photography in NYC is vibrant and full of energy. The architecture work in Tokyo show so much spontaneity and a more casual (not sloppy) approach. The work is an excellent visual contrapuntal to your more studied, considered, and staid work I typically see on this channel. It’s like the NYC/Tokyo photographs embody the qualities you highlighted in your commentary and revised appreciation of the 17. Really really enjoyed the terrific photographs!

Everything you say here makes sense and even tempts me to get one (even though I don’t need yet another camera). My issue is that I just don’t like the small negatives and having to do 72 frames, which is why I rarely use my Pen F (that I love). But I speak as someone who regularly does large format and when doing medium format thinks that 8 frames of 6x9 is the perfect amount! 😉 That said, I have when traveling carried a 35mm as a second camera (OM-4ti, Trip 35, or the fabulously small and capable Ricoh FF-1) as you mentioned as a complement to a medium format camera. i don’t know; maybe I might gift myself one for Christmas….

Thank you, this video is enlightening. I used to have an Espio Mini with a similar three element lens, its photographs have the qualities of the Pentax 17. Back in the 90's Pentax made lots of the lens coating in the Espio Mini and it is good to see what a new coating does on this triplet lens. I was comparing your immages with mine from an Olympus Pen D with a high quality lens. I think the combination of a simple clear triplet and a modern coating is a winner in the Pentax 17.

There is great joy and liberation in using half frame cameras casually to document your life. It really complements my Pen F with the 40 f1.4 lens which i use more for artistic and closer crop composition. You have created amazing compositions using it. I also almost always using it in vertical framing. I am still not completely able to use it well close up especially indoors. Hopefully will get used to it

I’d still prefer it with for 35mm negatives, autofocus, aperture priority, shutter speed indicator in the viewfinder, 40mm f2.0 lens. I love the manual ISO, exposure compensation and filter ring! That is a standout feature among P&S cameras. You don’t get that combination with vintage P&S cameras. Essentially I want something like a Fujifilm Klasse, but with a filter ring and manual ISO dial.

I like this enough to give one a try. 72 frames per roll sounds good. My only reason for occasionally shooting film is to teleport myself back about 45 years before anxiety, stress, self doubt and back pain set in. For me though I love the tactile feel and most importantly the Kraftwork like rhythm of click, slap and advance. All those springs and gears working in harmony is so pure and in those brief seconds I’m young again. And if I’m young again then so are mom and dad and all my friends. Maybe the designers at Pentax understood this.

I'll also agree strongly about two points later in the video. First is some of the traits of the lens. If Pentax knows anything about lens design, they know coatings and color transmission. Those seem like they've always been at the top of the list for Pentax lens designers. Second, I really feel the 17 as a great B camera. Pairing a half-frame like this, or even a plastic Reto/Kodak H35N, with a more serious camera goes well. With one, you can fully document everything around you, any stray scene which captures your fancy. With a serious SLR or even medium format or larger camera, you take your time for the shots that truly matter. The pair of a digital camera with a short telephoto lens and a half-frame with a slightly-wide lens like this also has been a favorite combo of mine.

Oh hey, it me. =D I stand by it. The Pentax 17 is a casual camera. Beginners probably want a casual camera, but more experienced folks might want a casual, too. Manual enough to feel involved, automatic enough to be easy. I think it hits a sweet spot for that kind of experience. That said... I think I just put my last roll of film through mine for a while. I'm finding it to be pretty awkward in a chilly New England Winter, where I want to wear mittens. I've made myself a nice set with open thumb and index finger, they're great with a mirrorless or SLR. But the lens on the 17 is so shallow that I'm worried that the mitten tip from the lower three fingers is going to be in frame. We'll see once I get the roll developed. Looking forward to shooting more of it in Spring!

I think it was so easy to get caught up on potential downsides on the spec sheet but the design has proven to work so well in the end for when you want to Just Shoot. I’ve really enjoyed my 17 for street photography. It’s so quiet and unobtrusive. Regarding blurry images and shutter speeds: First I want to say most point and shoot cameras for this size feature shutter speeds similar to the 17’s. And that’s enough to expose ISO 400 film correctly in any lighting condition and since even the fast B&W negative films have good overexposure latitude, it’s not an issue if the image is overexposed by a stop or two. Second, the best way to avoid shaky images is to use Bokeh mode. The camera will prioritize keeping the lens open but with a 350th max shutter speed that means it’ll hit that fairly quickly in brighter conditions. So you basically have a fast shutter speed priority mode with that. I’ve successfully shot it with Ektachrome and a warming filter that takes another third stop in shady streets with people moving and they’ve all come out sharp. And at typical street distances from 2m to infinity you really only need to use the last two clicks on the focus scale. And since the lens is likely to still stop down some in daylight scenes even when rated at 80 ISO, having the focus not set perfectly wasn’t an issue. What’s an issue for me is the meter, which seems to tend toward underexposure and gets tripped by backlight quite easily. That’s not the biggest issue with negative film but it seems to happen more with faster films. The camera was way more likely to severely underexposure above ISO 400 even with only some backlight that should have effected the scene too much. For the Ektachrome rolls I was constantly using exposure compensation, think where in relation to middle grey the scene would average out to. That’s not particularly great for a camera meant for total beginners but the exposure was correct in that case. It’s a shame because there are fully automatic point and shoots that were similarly priced to the 17 that don’t have that issue. They’re smart enough to compensate for extreme lights or parts of the images that are mostly white or black. It’s still a good camera considering what it is but I’d say it’s more for enthusiasts who have some understanding of exposure than total beginners.

Agree with a lot of what you say in the video. Manual focus is fine with me, but I want landscape mode and "full frame" negatives. I use mostly a first-generation Ricoh GR when shooting film now and had hoped for something similar but with manual film advance and full manual control. The 17 isn't that far off except for the half frame part. Maybe the next Pentax will get even closer.

Simpler designs can be the sharpest. Especially triplets are known to be able to be incredibly sharp with very good rendering. The issue is when you want to make them fast. As always I really love your videos. I have one thing to say, I heard the argument about this being a middle place camera, not fully auto not fully manual, and I've owned lots of cameras in that category so I like this category of camera. BUT, I will not buy the Pentax 17 because it's not a rangefinder. I want full control of my focus with these middle place cameras, I disagree with the people that said this camera should have been autofocus, NO! I'm glad it's not auto focus, but it would still give the beginners and everyone that likes this camera, nearly the same experience if this was a range finder that still uses the pictogram focusing scale instead of meters or feet, this way if you are shooting from the hip(not looking through the viewfinder) you can still focus the same as this camera already does, BUT when you look through the viewfinder you have a rangefinder patch and you focus precisely all on your own. If this was a rangefinder camera I would buy it.

I find it difficult to find a good use for this camera, apart from its size, when there are so many better and cheaper classic cameras that work just as well. The size and the lens do not justify its existence for me, although you can get more photos per roll. I don't know if it's the KZbin compression, but I didn't find the photos to be of such good quality either. I think it ends up being a compromise that doesn't give you the quality or the possibility of enjoying taking photos. If I want something portable, light and cheap, there are better alternatives, even if they are many years old, like an old Minolta F range finder that fits in any pocket or an Olympus RC for example.

I am not against zone metering. It's great on manual cameras. But this camera *forces* automatic exposure reading. This means there always is a time lag, just like when auto focussing. So you get the worst from both worlds. Either give me manual exposure or auto focus in this case. I would go for the Rollei35AF from Mint if we compare those two new cameras. It also lets you manually set aperture and shutter speed which is more than the 300€ price gap might insinuate.

What is zone metering?

@@mortimersnerd8044 What this weird camera called Pentax 17 does. It has no focussing capabilities. Yet it forces onto the user a delay because it has automatic metering that is forced and cannot be turned off for street photography or when you want to make a snapshot that truly is a *snapshot.* Not a: Push the button -> wait till it meters -> photo is taken. Wherein a lot of moments get lost. If you are interested in a truly snapshot camera you have to invest into manual cameras. Or go the cheap way with plastic cameras without any control whatsoever.

Olympus pen is the same concept. Why so much focus on the Pentax 17?
@AnalogInsights

Because the Pentax 17 represents the start of something completely new and will shape the future of film photography. The original Olympus Pen had been covered extensively on this channel before in a dedicated video.

@ Thanks for the reply. Would love a revisit of the pen alongside the 17. Informed comparison between. Thanks!

It was always going to be a non starter for me. Half frame is not something that interests me. I have enough problems getting through 36 frames.

I just can't believe people are falling for this camera when you can get something like a Canon EOS 500 for $20 and have all those EF lenses at your disposal. Save yourself hundreds of dollars people .... grab yourself a late 1990s SLR because the manufacturers were throwing all the latest tech at them.

Also, why would you want to go round a nice city and take pictures of the backside of people in the shade? And the buildings skewed and lopsided, mostly. Oh, well, maybe i am too old for this.

Pentax, why not make all images square. This vertical nonsense is irritating. If we had square photos instead, we could edit much easier and have more image to play with.

You didn't even mention how bad video is on this camera. Probably atrocious, I'd guess. In other news: funny how Pentax is positioning itself as a specialty brand: film, DSLR, hard core street with the Ricoh GR, outdoor. No serious professional gear anymore. Just lifestyle and street style. Interesting.

I'm sorry, but I do not see the point of ever using film again. There is no advantage; nothing whatsoever is superior to digital. Nostalgia is fine for some but, to me, digital is better in every way, especially as you had to scan the film and then make digital images anyway. You can play with film simulations in many cameras but, again, I don't see the point!

Vacation in Tokyo... right after being in New York.... That is for sure a most logical thing to do... Especially when coming from Germany which is just in the middle between these destinations.... Or perhaps not quite 😂. Doesn't matter , we need to use our spare milages😂😂😂😂 Well , I guess I am a bit sarcastic, but don't mind. I guess it is a sickness of this sick times. Travelling about as if there were no problems growing more and more serious in most parts of the world

Thank you Max. It is clear that this is not my camera. I watched your reviews and later helped to choose some cameras (like OM-4 or Leica) but this is clear that it is not my camera. Sometimes an honest and clear review can help to not choose something. I will continue to review them.
