DOUBLE EXPOSURE with POLAROID cameras

i love this video so much, especially the creativity that went into this, but as a beginner like me, I found it quite hard to do this. I had to constantly skip back a few seconds to get a 2 sec glimpse of what you were doing before it cut to a shot of your face. It would have been better and clearer, as a viewer to see the process entirely, narrated step by step, with cautionary advices. Nonetheless, I applaud your creativity and look forward to clearer narration. Thank you!

So I just tried this. The part about cutting yourself, yeah, for real though. The metal is sharp as shit. I cut my finger. Make sure to use sand paper on the edges and the bent part that goes the furthest back in the camera. If you don't sand that bit at the back you will scratch your photos really badly. I've made cardboard versions of this that break after one use. Glad I have something with more longevity. Thanks for the video.

Very nice trick! You can also slide a dummy frame with the image part cut out on top of the image you’re gonna expose. This way when the first pic is took, only the dummy frame is expelled and you can take another shot!

tried that too but, the frame stability is not good enough to put it in place. i prefer the aluminum that just slides into place ;) and you can take as many exposures as you want. Also dont forget the frame is not that thin so you get slighlty out of focus.

I've done it where you just pre-open where the film goes and then after you take the shot just drop it down so its fully open and the camera won't fully push out the shot - so If you put your finger in front of where the film comes out it will full stop it....it's way easier! Good video as always though!

ohh thanks ;) If you don't mess up super bad and i have no idea how that would be possible their is no harm for the camera, since that is the basic mechanism happening with every empty pack of film. The only thing happening is the hook sliding over our tool and snapping back in place, and the rollers running empty without an image between them.

Hi, I just discovered your channel as I was doing some research about different things you can do with the frames. I was just getting tot know my onestep2 when I accidently made a double exposed picture. I thought it was possible to let the picture develop in the camera by turning it off (while holding the shutter) so you wouldn't have to put it somewhere dark and safe. But it didn't came out when I turned the camera back on ,so I took another shot and it came out double exposed. I thought it was a mistake but now I know that this is a another technique to take pictures. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

Thanks for the information on how to make the tool to create the double exposure. I have made this but I can not get the tool to stay on the left and it covers the film. Also I have had issue with exposing the film in the bottom left corner which I assume is from inserting the tool? Any further insights or tips please 🙏🏻

Multiple Exposure is a really creative and awesome way to shoot photo. Unfortunately, SQ10 by Fujifilm doesn't have real multiple exposure (it just layer two images). Thus, I buy a Lomo'instant Square. Thanks for share the way for Polaroid cameras.

The SQ10 is digital so it always has to be some electronic calculation :) But yeah works great with alot of the Lomo Instant cameras.

I know this is an old video but man, what a great tutorial! I was able to make the double exposure device no problem, thank you! The question I have is, how do you avoid light leaks using this?? I’ve tried it twice now and both times I have massive light leaks from the stick side of the film. I even tried painting the stick black and still I get tons of light leaking in. Any tips??

I have the same issue, massive light leaks no matter what I do. Think the only option is to go into a pitch black room or use like a darkroom bag when putting in or removing the tool. Gonna try that and see if I have any luck. Let me know if you fixed this though

Thank you for all your fantastic videos. I would like to ask you a question: I have a OneStep 2 and i tried the double exposure just like you suggest to do. It works great but a stranger thing happened: after i took the second exposure, the camera expelled the film but all of the led of the remaining films turned on! I already did a photo before the test with double exposure so two of the 8 led should have been off. Did ever happend to you? I'm worried about the correct functioning of the camera now.

I have another trick that is not quite as reliable but very easy. When you take your first shot you have to be ready with another finger on the door release so that as soon as the shutter closes you open the door so the picture doesn't go through the rollers. Then you push it back in and do the second one like normal. Sometimes it's hard to get the picture to push in all the way because it goes above the lip in the back. But it usually works.

My gramps was a huge polaroid fan all the pics he took were with his Land camera and a Onestep closeup like you have in this vid! I just dug both of them out and got a 4pack of 600 film. I was wondering if this could be done with my camera and it can! This leaves me with a question after you said to measure the width of the tool. Using this method would it be possible to insert a mask then expose and remove as you would like? Like maybe 4 quadrants with the mask then a 5th as an overall exposure. Great video definitely trying this out.

Hi, I would like to use a Polaroid film to expose a screen to it. I see you know how they work very well, How could I do this? So I would need to buy the film, make the room very dark, take out one film from the pack stick it to the screen and set the screen to light up an image for 0.1 seconds. Would this work? I see that there are some rollers which push out ink, do I need to push this out manually but still while the room is dark? Are there any films that would work without to have ink pushed out? Would appreciate your input.

by screen are you talking about a lcd screen? all instant films need some process to roll out the chemicals over the negative this is a pretty crucial part and can't be done by hand since you need absolutly even pressure, but its no problem to insert the frame back in a filmpack and let the camera do the work

Hey! I have a polaroid 600 and I just attempted this technique for the first time. I tested it with one shot left on my roll in case I screwed it up but I think the battery couldn't handle more than the 10 available shots and stopped firing after the shot numbers ended. Does that happen to you? I've never had any problems with my camera and now I'm a bit worried I've messed it up for good.

Can you light paint with polaroid? I happened to be on the Polaroid Originals website, looking at the I-type film, when I noticed one of the photos had a heart drawn with light on it and a woman sitting in the middle. How did they create that effect? Does anyone know?

i have to take a look at that exact image but, yeah you can lightpaint with them. one way would be to cover the lightmeter of the camera to give you longer exposure times. the other would be with the time machine from MiNT camera.

Do you know how to make “copy” Polaroids? For example, I’ve seen around that you can buy Polaroids of famous musician like Lana Del Ray or Halsey, and it’ll come in an actual fujifilm print, but they’re obviously reproduced photos (I think you can buy, for example, 5 Polaroids of the same celebrity picture). Do you think you know how they might do it? Maybe have the right exposure from a screen or projector projected into the lens? Or maybe I’m just crazy haha

not crazy at all :) for polaroids the could use thr instantlab for fuji the sq10 would be an option, but you could also expose directly onto the image or just take a photo of a projection or something like this, a ton of different ways

What I've been trying to do is to reach out to all sorts of strangers here at home in London to let them see the awesomeness of film and so far I've been using my TLR to catch people's eyes. If I could get hold of instant film one day cheaply for my Mamiya, I could give the photos I take to the strangers so they can appreciate it even more and get more people into the wonders of film! An easier method would be opening the front hatch with the rollers just after taking the shot, so it cant get all the way through. You then have to push the frame all the way back into the camera with a creditcard or similar. Only tried it with my last shot tho.

I think it's because he doesn't remove the film cardridge from the camera. I just tried with my 600 same thing, and it didn't spit out the film. I don't have a SX-70, so I don't know how much it differs tehnically from the 600 cameras..

it's because the cartride was already inside but if you would add the tool before you insert the new pack it would also not be able to throw out the darkslide

I have seen a trick: What the guy did was: Instead of releasing the shitter button after taking a shot, he just kept on pressing it so the film didnt eject and upon pressing it still, he turned it off and voila! The first frane was shot and again turned it on and shot the second frame. And then DOUBLE EXPOSURE 😊 he did it with pola1step

Nice idea, but you’ve gone much too quickly through the steps needed to cut out and bend the device. It would have been great if you had just added in a few still images of each step in cutting and again at each step in the bending of the piece. A measurement or three would also be helpful. All that said, the principal is straight forward so hopefully a bit of trial and error will help.
