Being a kid in the 1980s when all those toys were coming out was just as awesome as it seems😉 It’s one of the few things that really was the exact way people imagine/remember it to be. Unfortunately Mego went out of business a few months before when my earliest memories occurred. I wasn’t aware of it til years later of course but it’s weird narrowly I missed it. Almost like it was planned😜

I have fond memories of walking into Toys R Us and seeing row upon row of Mego boxes with all of the superheroes on display. I could only afford a few, but just seeing them all on display was a treat. Decisions decisions. What to buy? Toys have never been the same and now Toys R Us is no more. Thanks for the flashback. That was fun.

I was completely enamored with my 12" inch Mego Spider-Man figure! When I was in kindergarten, my pop would bring it with him when he would pick me up from school. I also remember holding onto the figure while watching episodes of the '67 Spider-Man animated series after school. Damn, those were some fun, fun times!!

My older brother was injured in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, so war and the military was not very popular in our home and I was not allowed to have any GI Joes. The first toys I remember playing with all the time and loving more than anything else were Megos. Both Adam West's Batman and Star Trek were in syndication and I played with my figures during those shows, every day! Megos are still, by far, my favorite toys. I've collected most of the re-issues, which I still have to slap myself at times to make sure I'm really awake and it isn't a dream that they have been resurrected. I wish Marty Abrams would bring back the Mego company name and begin doing the Marvel characters, too!

Great video, Mr. Tony! Had the Conan Mego figure back in the late '70s. A nice touch about the Mego figures was its multi license advantage over the others. A kid could have Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers AND Captain James T. Kirk team up WITH Iron Man and the Fantastic Four to duke it out with the Klingon, the Lizard, Green Goblin & Ming the Merciless, then hang out with the Fonz and the Happy Days gang by watching... a KISS concert.

With all due respect to your father, one truly is NEVER to old for loving,playing,and collecting toys! I was at the perfect age for both mego and Kenner star wars as I was born in 1973 so by 75 I started with Mego World greatest heroes Superman,Spider-Man,Hulk,Robin,Joker,Penguin..by time star wars was released in 1977 I had a nice Mego collection. Soon the Kiss rock group Mego figures 12 inch would be added along with my favorite as well the 12 inch HULK!!... I then went head over heels into star wars vehicles,play sets,figures. I still collect star wars with the newest trilogy unfolding and having fun but still enjoy Super heroes from the Marvel Hasbro line and Mattel's DC figures. The Diamond Select company has made nice marvel figures and DC Collectibles mAking their own DC figures these days are nice too. The Figures Toy company is fabulous for reproduction mego from world greatest heroes,to Kiss,dukes of hazzard,the Evil Kenievel , and so many more ..I suggest their website to look at that old mego coolness! Great video again! This and the star wars video define my childhood favorite toys!!!

In my opinion,the 80s were the golden age of toys but the 70s were not off by much
@ryanbarker5217
@ryanbarker5217 6 жыл бұрын
the 80's had some massive hits, to be sure; star wars carried over, he-man, transformers, g.i. joe 3.75", tmnt, micro machines, and those are just a few of the boys' toys. you also had cabbage patch and pound puppies, etc.. the 70's had some amazing toys, too, of course. i think, though, there's a bit more nostalgia the farther back you go as children were just more innocent, imo. with that innocence you have a particular charm, and that was wearing thin by the late 80's. kids were less impressed with a bag of green army men and wanted action features. the 70's were probably the most influential toy era, again just my opinion, while the 80's really capitalized on that and in a more crass, corporate way. it just had a different feel.

Megos we're definitely a huge part of my childhood. My favorite lines were The World's Greatest Super Heroes, The Dukes of Hazzard, CHiPs, Starsky and Hutch and Happy Days. My all time favorite TV series is the Incredible Hulk. Bill Bixby was my childhood idol and hero. And I've been fortunate to have met Lou Ferrigno a few times over the years. And the Mego 12 inch Incredible Hulk figure always reminded me of Lou Ferrigno and the classic Incredible Hulk TV series. :) 👍👍

These were THE toys of my childhood, as a comicbook kid once I spotted these in the stores even G.I. Joe instantly took a back seat. Not only the biggest superhero selection ever but DC and Marvel actually compatable for the true 1st crossover. And made all the more incredible thanks to every other franchise they used. Best part was how customizable they were. Simply put any unmasked hero's head on a Star Trek body and you had yourselves a brand new crew member (I used to scower the yardsales for redshirts for army building security officers). Or put the same head on a hero and he was now unmasked. Slip him into Starsky and Hutch or Happy Days (or Walton's or Sweathogs) cloths and they were i n their secret identities. And with a little more effort, like Thor in hand made blue shorts or brown loincloth, and you had Kaz-Zar or Kamandi. And the awesome cardboard and vinyl playsets were just as customizable with some drawing skills or even just some old comics, scissors and tape. I don't know if this line started my creativity or just fueled it to new heights, but definitely was key.

Oh man I remember the Batman version with the removable helmet. Not sure if this was Mego or Action Man. The Mego had a molded helmet or cowl for the whole head. I had both and while I loved the helmet it was another thing I could lose. Like Green Arrow's hat and bow. Heck I was 6 or 7. I'd forget my butt if it wasn't attached. Also those plastic gloves never lasted either...lol.

With Superhero movies being the most popular thing out there, it's a shame no company has remade the Mego 1970's super hero action figures. Kids of the 70's would buy these in bulk, both for they kids/grandkids or themselves. Retro is always cool, and this would be a license to print money.

Mego was resurrected about ten years ago, with their focus on collectible 8" figures based on various television shows, movie franchises, comic book superheroes, and pop culture figures. The figures at a hit with adult action figure collectors and are quite desirable. The most recent product being announced are action figures based on Atlas Comics characters from the 1970s and a line of retro Marvel "Worlds Greatest Super Heroes" eight inch figures, which will be sold in Disneyland, Walt Disney World and the Shop Disney website, beginning in late 2024-early 2025.

Superb review. People not of this era really have a difficult time appreciating why this was such a big moment. I was born a little before the mid-60's so I did the bulk of my growing up in the late 60's to early/mid-70's, thus I knew what play time looked like before Megos. In the 60's all we had were GI Joes and that was a soldier figure at that point. Sure, Captain Action came onto the scene briefly, but regardless of what people try to say today, he was never a big hit. I had the Cap and a Batman outfit, but the masks were often two pieces that fell off during playtime. Plus with him being so big for a little kid it was not ideal (no pun intended). So there wasn't really ANY kind of variety for action figures back then. The very notion of a widespread market for action figures was still just a myth. In fact, when I use to watch the Spider-man '67 show, my mother would draw me a picture of Spider-man so she could cut him out which gave me something to play with. On thinking back about it, the cut out had to be close to the height of a Mego so I understand first hand why scale was so relevant to that chosen height. It would fit perfectly in a young person's hand. Also people of today have to remember, we were still operating under old school ideas about kids and toys. You weren't going to come across too many teenagers holding a GI Joe or other figure in the 60's or 70's. Toys were for kids and teenagers chased skirts, listen to the Beatles and Zepplin and drove fast cars. The days of cross- pollinating age groups for toys was still decades away. So when I came across Action Jackson that was a neat moment. But in some respects he was a shrunken GI Joe. I needed a new identity besides more rescue operators. So when I came upon a spin rack of superheroes hanging out of their solid boxes with masks coming off the likes of Batman and Robin it was like tripping across heaven. They spoke to EVERY dream I EVER conceived of when I had nothing but my imagination to conjure up an adventure. So Megos were revolutionary in so many ways. We finally had a REAL tool to assist us with our imaginations. Bruce Wayne could LITERALLY become Batman and that was such a freaking high. The following year when they put out Spider-man I just about cried holding him in my hands. It was like a old time cowboy riding a horse and suddenly someone pulls up in a 65 Cobra and says, " Let me show you a real Mustang". It was completely off the chain. People today have NO CLUE, because they live in an age where every indulgence is satisfied instantly and new markets are created almost daily for just about anything. We didn't have anything like that back before Mego's. People often get asked, "Where were you when..." and then you fill in the blank. Well Megos had that kind of impact for me. I knew where I was at and how they made me feel. If you could package that feeling, you could retire today. Another great review my friend.

Thanks so much for your kind words and your truly touching story. The way you describe the impact that Mego toys had on your childhood reminds me of exactly how Action Man effected my youth. One of the reasons I called my channel Analog Toys is because that's the difference between my generation and my sons generation. He has no interest in action figures or anything where a little imagination is required. He is from the Digital Toys generation, which makes me wonder, when he's older, will he be collecting vintage iPads?
@Playitstraight44
@Playitstraight44 7 жыл бұрын
What a great story about your name. Thank you for sharing that and I completely agree with your sentiment. Kids today will have very little to look back on in terms of antiques because everything is on a hard drive. The generation you and I grew up in was about the imagination and how well we could execute that imagination with what we had in hand. The challenge was accessibility. If I liked Boris Karloff in Frankenstein, I didn't get to watch it online or stick in a DVD whenever it struck my fancy. I was lucky if I got to see it once a year and that would ONLY be because we had a local TV station called WDRB (now called Fox 41) which played horror movies locally every Friday called Fright Night. Yep, I was excited to see a movie adopt that name decades later. Sorry, I digressed But in our era, if you missed something, like a movie, it meant you might have to wait a whole other year to see it again. Toy lines were even more harsh. Do you realize that when the Mego Kidflash first came out, I only knew about him through illustrations in a merchandise comic called the Superheroes catalog which offered toys from Heroes World in New Jersey? I never saw him in stores and didn't land eyes on an actual specimen until 1991! It took me another ten years before I found one complete that was affordable to own. Had it not been for the internet and Ebay, I might still be looking. So today's generation have opportunities we never had and in some ways that's too bad. Because people from our generation truly appreciate what we had around us...even if we couldn't always get to it.

StoryTime- I remember reading about Mego Wonder Woman Doll that went for $40k... So, the story goes, Mego had a Wonder Woman Doll already out on the market, then in 1975 the tv series aired, and consequentially Mego released another doll to look more like Linda Carters 'Wonder Woman' ... but, in Australia, it hadn't aired until 76-77 so, Mego just sent all the remaining old dolls to Australia. Come 2000's the original doll was/is very much in demand and one came up for sale/auction from Australia in almost pristine condition.

These were my favorite toys growing up. Well this and Hot Wheels. Mego figures were my way of becoming a super hero. The line up of heroes was epic, BUT the villians or Rogues gallery was weak. Yeah there was Green Gobin for Spiderman. Batman had the most villians...the Joker, The Penguin🐧, Catwoman, Riddler, and Mr. Mxyzptlk for Superman. There weren't many Marvel bad guys. Doctor Doom was one I always wanted. Red Skull another. Even some heroes got left out. The Flash and Hawkman were a couple off the top of my head. I did get a Kid Flash and a Aqua Lad from a mail order place in NY. Regardless of wasn't made I loved what was made. My only issues were the Stickers they used on the heroes clothes. The R on Robin, the S on Superman, the Bat on Batman, the Star on Capt. America, and the #4 on the Fantastic 4 members. They ALWAYS came off and once tape or a sticky side came off it never ever stayed on. As a 6-10 year old those always came off. Iron Man had a sewn O on his chest but a yellow taped O inside would also pop out. This drove me crazy. A Superman without the "S" was NOT Superman. So off to get a new one. The Joker, Riddler, and Penguin didn't have a stickered logo. Spiderman didn't either. The Hulk, well all he had were purple pants. The Thing from the Fantastic 4 had a Rock jump suit....UGH. His head was cool as were his fists, but that suit...lol. Now these "gripes" never swayed me away from Mego. As I said I loved them. The Planet Of the Apes sets were amazing as well. I also remember a Knight of the Round Table group as well. All of these figures were so much fun. Then the 3.75" craze in 77-78 hit with Star Wars. By the beginning of the 3rd Star Wars movie toys were fading fast. High School was now ahead. A freshman buying a toy, not a great look back then. So that ended a wonderful journey that I never totally gave up. I collected into my late 20's. But I got serious in my late 30's. I wish ohhh how I WISH I would have kept my Mego figures. I had even saved the Boxes of the ones that early on came in boxes. To try and preserve my sticker logos. Didn't work..lol. Thanks for this BLAST FROM THE PAST. A EPIC Video. 👍👍👍 👍 👍

Figures Toy Company has remade all of the DC Comics Mego action figures. Not as good as the originals, but a great start.

I think its good that Mego did not get the Star Wars licence because if they did they would eventually of been brought out by Hasbro and now they can get on with there own thing

I had the riddler, the joker and the penguin.. always thought the heroes were boring. Saw Star Wars on my 10 th birthday... liked Darth Vader the best. More dynamic, dramatic i suppose

Had Mego secured the rights to SW the figures and ships would have arguably been better. Mego Planet of the Apes and Batman were the first toys I remember. My Bat bike with side car was my favourite toy. Then SW happened and as you say the action figure dynamic changed. I don't recall the Buck Rogers stuff being hete in the UK. Lookingbst it in your film it looks better than the Kenner SW equivalents. RIP Mego of the 70s. The retro relaunch lines look good.

One of the reasons Mego heroes was so great was they had both Marvel and DC. Nowadays, Disney won't let Mego make any Marvel figures, I only see DC and Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, Monsters, etc.

The Star Trek line was resurrected in a way by EMCE who replicated the Mego style and figure height and reissued the original Enterprise bridge playset as well, I had the originals, they all were lost in a fire, but I was glad to get the EMCE ones. megomuseum.com/remego/emcetrek.shtml Maybe someone will replicate the Kenner 6MDM line in time.
