I just bought an Analogue NT. What sold me on it was the feature set, convenience and build quality. RGB out, HDMI out, famicom expansion audio, famicom disk system support and original hardware (ie. no emulation) in a single, well built package. I have an RGB monitor and one of the last consoles I have that hasn't been modified for RGB out is my NES because the modification is quite extensive. I could modify my NES to give me the same feature set it would require a lot of work. While I love how games look on RGB, HDMI can be nice too. It's a different experience, not rooted in nostalgia but still enjoyable, to play Super Mario Bros with a sharp, beautiful picture across a 65" screen.

JDAndNightrain How is it after buying? What's the lag on the upscaling?
@JDAndNightrain9 жыл бұрын
greymonkus Unfortunately it hasn't arrived yet. The west coast longshoremen strike held up delivery from China to Analogue NT's assembly facilities state side. The last email I got from Analogue NT was on April 30th and stated that they hoped to have all systems shipped and en route to buyers by the end of May.

The main point they are missing is there are 10,000x more NES/Famicom collectors than there are Neo Geo collectors. There are plenty of NES/Famicom collectors who have the money to be Neo Geo collectors, but they didn't own/play/love Neo Geo as kids. I think it looks awesome. Based on the price of billet aluminum dress up car parts (not moving engine parts, but dress up parts) it seems like a pretty decent price actually.
@Garrette639 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how I feel about things like this. I'm sort of glad that the system is available for people to collect and play, but I cringe every time an old game cart or system gets destroyed to make something else. Those destroyed units are never going to be made again.
@alliantdevil10 жыл бұрын
How is there not a market for this? ~60 for an NES ~120 for a honeybee Famicom adapter ~300 (or more) for a proper scaler =~$480 Not really that expensive when you put it in perspective (and don't already have any of that hardware). Plus this just looks fantastic and will look great sitting next to my modern consoles in the living room. I see no downside unless you're already an established NES collector. I'm not but have been wanting to for a while and this has pushed me to pursue getting only the games I want to play, not a full set.
@PatTheNESpunk10 жыл бұрын
A Famicom converter can be had for around $30-40 usually. Paying $120 for a converter is insane.
@alliantdevil10 жыл бұрын
point still stands: ~$60 for an NES ~$40 for Famicom converter ~$300 for scaler and you're still only talking around a $100 difference for a very elegant solution. I'll admit it's certainly not for everyone and I'm not particularly fond of the idea that it's almost certainly cannibalizing legit first party consoles but goddamn it's a pretty nice NES/Famicom centric solution.
@PatTheNESpunk10 жыл бұрын
alliantdevil You're also not including the $50+ HDMI adapter which Analogue is not including with the price. Also an NES can be had for $10-20 by itself without any controllers. So really the comparison is something like $550 for the Nt versus $360, and as Ian pointed out, you can then upscale all of your other systems as well. It doesn't affect me much either way - just want to inform people.
@dickkickem9 жыл бұрын
+alliantdevil Well, uh... -$60 for an NES -$120 for a Famicom [I got mine boxed for around that much, I have no idea how much it is single] + $50 shipping EMS from Japan $230 well spent.

@crunchsixfoe10 жыл бұрын
An RGB modded NES will already run you $300+, the fact that this will also play Famicom and FDS games out of the box in a sleek case, makes the price somewhat reasonable IMO
@Vriess12310 жыл бұрын
I want one of these, 500 is hard to stomach though. When you factor in all the +'s though (Top loader, RGB, Better sound, 4 ports...) this is actually really attractive to me. Just getting RGb done + a toploader is pretty expensive from what I read.
@1337Shockwav310 жыл бұрын
$150 vs. $500 - pretty much the same discussion as with "insta-collections". If they wanna do it, they shall go ahead - it's a fine product, the price is fair and you're free of worries to put any additional effort in it, especially for folks for which the NES is more of a status symbol than something of affection.
@Vriess12310 жыл бұрын
Yeah not sure I really follow where you are going with that. The system has other benefits that put it above a simple modded top loader. Seems like you might be overly worried about what people spend their money on.
@1337Shockwav310 жыл бұрын
Todd O Harris I don't even remotely care what you do with your money ;) I just thought I'd add my point of view to your interesting comment. I bet internally it's nothing more than a Super8 NES + viletim's RGB board.
@freeagentxms9 жыл бұрын
This is the most intelligent discussion i've seen regarding the NT. I'm glad you guys can admit that the cost associated with this thing isn't really that off-base. Clearly there are cheaper alternatives, and AI themselves could have cut corners on the enclosure to reduce the cost significantly, but the people acting as if this thing cost 1/4 of that to manufacture drive me insane. The value of this thing is very subjective, but anyone who understands what you're actually getting for the money isn't surprised at the cost. I'm perfectly happy with a simple RGB mod myself, but I'm very glad AI are building these, and wish them well.
@amplibax810 жыл бұрын
One thing you guys didn't consider is how expensive it is to actually add RGB output to an NES/Famicom. You need to cannibalize a RP2C03B chip from a Playchoice 10 or buy one on eBay. The chips currently go for $200-250 alone.

I've got one preordered in black along with the HDMI adapter, I play my games on a 120" screen with an 11.2 sound system, so I'm alway looking to get the best possible A/V out of my game systems. I have no complaints about the Retron 5 except it is an emulator, so I'd love to see Analogue do this with the SNES, Genesis, N64, Master System, the Atari systems (especially the 5200) even the disc bases systems that don't have HDMI out.
@scratchpoint9 жыл бұрын

@ravagingwolverine9 жыл бұрын
Others have said the price isn't so crazy when factoring in various things. As far as that goes, I'm under the impression that the NES RGB mod is not a simple and inexpensive thing either. As for CRTs, they're only going to become less common. Some also don't have the space or just don't want them. I got back into retro gaming long after getting rid of my last CRT and I don't want to get another. I was lucky enough to still have an XRGB2-plus I picked up a decade ago and I'm happy with its upscaling and scanlines on an LCD. As for the cannibalizing, I looked into it when this was announced. Analogue said they found a supply of new old stock Famicoms that had, I believe, casing issues and were otherwise unsellable.
@mangetruckcappydavis62738 жыл бұрын
I am one of those people who does not have the extra space for a famicon , nes and a crt tv plus my lcd tv. So being able to have both the famicon and nes combined and connected 1080 is awesome as my everyday machine.

Back in the day I bought my ps3 for 600 Euro with two controllers and a Game. The system broke 4 times starting right after warranty was off. I spent additional 250 Euro with its repair costs. After expieriencing this I can say for sure that an Analogue NT sounds like a good deal!
@KITT17110 жыл бұрын
For $500 I can buy not only a real original NES, but probably a complete boxed unopened one and still have money left over for many games for it. I can think of many other things to send money like that on, including a AES. And another option is that Retron 5, which costs much less. This thing does look cool and nice and all, but its simply just too much money for no good reason. And Pat is right, this isn't the same as Analog's CMVS, much different market.
@spegma10 жыл бұрын
That's unrealistic considering boxed complete unopened NES consoles go for anywhere from $500 to $1,000+.

When I play my old games the reason I don't use an emulator to be honest is that nostalgia brings playing those games to a level an emulator can't, and even playing on systems like the Retron 5 it's just not the same. And even though this is a NES inside the case it just isn't...

You can mod a NES to get RGB. And all you need for a SNES is just a 21 pin Scart cable. Way cheap if you already have a good monitor/TV. And if you hate using CRTs you can get component cables from HD Retrovision or an Upscaler like the RGB Framemeister.
@amihartz8 жыл бұрын
+Jim Fitton I don't get why people mod it at all, the NES has composite out. I wanted to play my NES on my big HD flat screen and so I just plugged it in, no converters or mods required. Maybe with some mods you'd get a slightly better picture, but I mean, they're NES games, do you really need some amazing picture quality?
@JBalmoreS8 жыл бұрын
Amelia Hartman You make a fair point. I guess some just want the colours to pop out at them but it's not worth the money in my opinion. The younger consoles perhaps.
@noizyme10 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it's for the die-hard nostalgic NES collectors that want the feeling that this is a new system that will work for a good while longer than a misc older system, too. Same for the new OEM cables/controllers. And it's roughly how much you save for passing up a pretty rare game in the wild 12 times, so I guess it's up to that strong-willed collector who really wants a one-of-a-kind system.
@MrMgizzoman10 жыл бұрын
I ordered this. I'm not a collector. I do have really fond memories of playing nes games. This is a beautiful piece of equipment. Somewhat unlike the original nes. This means my wife won't mind it sitting under the tv. That is huge. 500 is a lot, probably even too much, but an Xbox one cost that much and I got as much or more enjoyment out of an nes as I do Xbox one. And that's before you factor in nostalgia. Also this is a fun thing to do with groups of friend that isn't quite so geeky that it would put people off. (As long as they don't know how much it cost)
@DonaldMohrMusic9 жыл бұрын
I don't have $500 to spend on something like this, but I want to play NES in a room where I only am hooked up for HDMI (projector) with an actual NES controller (I love my Ouya, but it's just not the same.) So, I certainly understand the appeal. I highly recommend playing SMB 3 on a 10' screen, though. You truly feel like that kid in "The Wizard" without having to coordinate 9 large CRT TVs... Though, if the 72 pin connector works considerably better than my Yobo or NES with either the original or my replacement 72 pin connector, I can see it being worth it. I agree with the assessment that maybe 300 units will sell. I can't imagine that this is something those guys are doing for a full time living.
@shii57959 жыл бұрын
I will be picking one of these up.
@amihartz8 жыл бұрын
You can just get a Wii U and install a NES emulator (like WiiMednafen or FCE Ultra GX) and play NES games over HDMI. But really, NES games look fine over composite and the NES supports composite. I have my NES hooked up to my HD flat screen because it takes composite, like most TVs these days do.
@thepotatozombie94029 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'd love to have one of these things. They are very cool looking. I'd get it just as an oddity for my collection, like Ian said. There's no way I'd pay $500 for it though, I might consider going up to $100.
@thepotatozombie94029 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know. A block of aluminum is expensive. I'm just saying the console costs more than I'm willing to spend.
@devilmikey0010 жыл бұрын
Ok if you are a rich collector and you don't want a CRT around you could build a very nice looking emulator box using some fairly low end PC parts you put into a fancy looking HTPC case designed to sit under the TV. That way you could still have your collection wall but when you want to play you just boot up your emulator box and use the scaling in there. Save you a few hundred bucks and at the end of the day you have a far more feature rich HTPC to boot ;p
@Arcadiality10 жыл бұрын
Good points chaps. I own their cmvs system and it just made sense (easily) when compared to owning an AES. Sure, you make trade offs with the AES' pretty carts but, I can at least buy mvs shock boxes, import them from the UK and still not spend have as much on one top Neo Geo AES game. I have a feeling the ANT (lol) will have a ripple effect though. People will see them on You Tube etc owned by others and then slowly, they will succome to buying one...perhaps. Interesting to know their sales figures in a couple years time..if it last that long, that is.

I'm not justifying the price but everyone is saying u can get a modded NES to do RGB. True but regardless its only 240p....alot of modern tvs won't even understand that or they see it as 480i thus introducing lag...your LCD is a fixed pixel display, meaning its always 1080p...if u feed it anything lower resolution your TV has to scale it...introducing LAG. The NT has a built in scaler thats supposedly lag free...feeding your tv a 1080p signal, no scaling.

I have a question... is there a way i can get my hands on the original arcade machine version of Killer Instinct without buying the actual machine itself? Like one of these cannibalized consoles and such? or a unit that runs arcade machines like these? Like one unit i can run arcade versions of KI, KI2, MK1,2,3, and other such arcade versions that NONE of the consoles really was able to achieve at the time without doing remakes later one!? I mean i have almost EVERY version of these games or atleast tried out every version if i dont have it and theres very few that come even close in most cases but KI ive yet to find ANYTHING even close to the arcade machine version! (MK1,2,3 has a very close if not THE closest on XBLand i think PSN but i dont think i got it yet on PS3! but KI has NOTHING except a whole new game now! seems Nintendo forgot about how awesome this game was and it was one of the best games to ever enter a gameroom in your town! and SNES st the time scratched my itch but that was all i ever got!) BTW like the podcast its actually one i watch and i never thought i would be saying that about any podcast! \m/

I think this is aimed at young adults who are starting to get there first "adult" jobs where they have expendable income on a regular basis. People who perhaps make more money in the amount of time it would take to find a very good quality original NES with the accessories needed to have four controllers, etc... The alternative would be to buy a collectors already assembled collection and the price would probably be around $500 anyway. So I think it is for people paying for convenience and piece of mind so they can relive their childhood memories and perhaps share them with their kids. The converse is that they are probably perceived as less "dedicated" but that is just part of growing up where hitting up garage sales on weekends becomes less practical when you have a family.

These guys don't know the difference between composite and RGB. Unless your retro system can output RGB, it will pretty much look like shit on an HDTV, even with a high quality upscaler. The normal models of Famicom/NES cannot do RGB. The only way to do it is to mod the Famicom with the PPU from the arcade board. If I didn't already have a Famicom modded with arcade hardware to output RGB, I would consider buying one from Analogue. The price is actually pretty decent, all things considered. Just don't buy any controllers from them.

$500 for a high-end NES/Famicom system? Pat and Ian are absolutely right; the only people that will really consider purchasing that thing would be either extreme hardcore collectors, or people who have a ridiculous amount of excess cash to toss around on whatever they feel like. Playing an NES game in 1080p might be pretty cool, sure, but not worth shelling out half a grand for.
@tetsujin_14410 жыл бұрын
The original NES (and all its hardware clones) produce crappy video quality. An upscaler can't fix that unless you fix the video quality issue first. Analogue NT addresses this by using the NESRGB board, or a clone of it. Retron 5 addresses this by emulating the NES in software instead of hardware. Retro Trio... I'm guessing just takes the shitty NES-on-a-chip composite video signal and upscales that to HDMI. Garbage in, garbage out. To get a good-looking NES or Famicom that's been RGB-modded, these days that's going to cost between $200-$250. Or $90 plus the NES if you do it yourself. It's just the price you pay for a quality picture.

Let's put this into perspective. The original NES package was $440 in today's money. The package with ROB was over $550. NES has a lot of buzz these days.

Looks like something to hunt for at flea markets in ten years.

My 64 gig iPad Air cost me 744 with tax. It's barely worth it and it is an awesome thing I use every day. This NES thing just.. Does what I can do in an emulator for free. Idgi man. Hell, I wouldn't pay 500 for a Sharp x68000 and it's a complete , rare, and awesome computer system!
