I'm working on a complete loose set for the monochrome Game Boy, all regions' releases. It's fun because the cart size makes it somewhat reminiscent of collecting trading cards. Also the long lifespan (parallel with three console generations) covers such a huge variety of themes across the games and their use of the technology. Comparing a Game Boy game released in 1989 to one from 1998 you almost can't imagine how they're using the same hardware. It was my first non-shared system and the one that got me into gaming, but my interest has nothing to do with nostalgia. The Game Boy with its library is simply so sweet and fascinating, I love it! Hats off to you, the king of portables!

I didn't grow up with the original game boy, I was born in 97 so I grew up with game boy advance, loved that system, shared one with my big brother and then me and my brothers got sp's. I didn't know there was an original gameboy until like 2006 I think, I bought Star Wars the Empire strikes back for like a couple bucks at a game store, I liked it even though it was hard. I appreciate the gameboy for what it was now that I'm older and know a lot about retro video games and consoles, home and handhelds

I with ya Pat, I never really wanted a GB either, but I do remember renting it (The GB and sum games) from a place called Box Office Video. I would always do this when my class in elementary school went on a field trip cuz I knew my Mom would be a chaperone and I could play it the whole bus ride to where ever and even at some theater we went to once. My complaint has always been that it wasnt back lit so u had to have the screen just perfect or u couldnt see anything. I was a Nintendo fanboy but I ended up buying a GameGear and loved it, Streets of Rage was my game. I remember losing the Game Genie for it in 5th grade when my class went to a place called Camp Tecumseh. This right here is why I love this show. The stories and topics that u and Ian bring up always bring me back to being a kid and having just an all around awesome time. Keep up the great work

The first podcast I have ever looked forward to. So many great memories with my Gameboy like playing at school and never getting caught. LOL, and a buddy of mine keeps 2 Gameboys by his toilet with a copy of Tetris in each. Why two, I have no clue, he is strange like that.

I can confirm that the backlit GB was a champ when it came to not draining batteries too fast. Also, I don't remember a link cable with two different inputs, but I remember my link cable had two of the small inputs and a converter on one end that could be plugged into the small one and attached to the big one.

I loved my GameBoy. I didn't get one till Metroid II came out because I thought the GameBoy was more like a Tiger Handheld with switchable games. I had no idea for years, but then I was 8/9years old when it came out and no one I knew had one. Wasn't till years later I was at a Best Buy and they had one of those display models with the attached monitor and the game inserted was the then just released Metroid II. Being a HUGE Metroid fan I just had to have it and shortly after got one for Christmas. I had Metroid II and Tetris and nothing else. I still played it till it died some 10 years later. It was replaced by my SP and that was when I finally bought other GameBoy games. Funny note, I had that GameBoy SP for two years before I bought an actual GBA game, I was pretty much catching up on the original GameBoy games I missed out on.

I started started building up a collection for the gameboy at the beginning of the year. It's actually really fun to collect for and most games are cheap. The only expensive one I've ran into is Supermarioland which is 20 (I could have bought it for 8 but noooooo I had to get Mario vs Donkey Kong on the GBA instead.....still a fun ass game though). And honestly, having loose games is really great because you can swap em out really quick if you get bored or frustrated (looking at you Golf). And if you want to case them all you have to do is get an all-purpose multitool, use the saw attachment and cut off a small piece of a regular DS case (not the GBA sloted one's), cut the part that slants down where you put the game, print out a cover and you're done.

For me the Game Boy is level with the SNES as my favourite system of all time. So so many awesome games to mention. My best memory was playing through (and beating) Link's Awakening whilst on holiday in Ibiza in 1995. I didn't see much sun in that two weeks! I still find it the most emotionally moving Zelda game even with all the advancements of the last 20 years.

What you should do in the future, is to stop typing, and make sure you are not making an ass of yourself. You typed a comment that you should have known would incite a not so happy response. I remember playing the Gameboy in the early 90s, I absolutely loved it for its simplicity. I owned a couple of games, maybe around 10-15 cartridges and none was bad. But the Game Gear had amazing games as well, i only got one a few years ago and got really surprised by its performance. Too bad, not too many games came out for that system, not nearly as many as the Gameboy at least.

Long live the Gameboy. The color was my very second system and I got it with Pokemon Red :) great vid. The only thing I gotta say is that, about the battery life, I've read somewhere that batteries nowadays are much more powerful now than back when the GB was in it's prime. It compared it to how the Sega Nomad lasts much longer today in comparison to when it was first launched.

I got my first Gameboy early December 1989. It was supposed to be a Christmas present but I was there when my mom bought it and I nagged her so much. "I NEED to take this to school before Christmas so I can show everyone!" So she let me have it. Batteries: I played it a couple hours almost every day. I remember a fresh set of Energizer batteries I was good for almost a month. I remember Duracell lasted a week or two less longer. All I had at first was Tetris but then for Christmas I got Alleyway and Super Mario Land. I never used the link up cable. No one ever had a Gameboy around but me and they all wanted to play it. I don't know why I brought it with me, I never got to play it around other people. Eventually it got stolen because I let someone play it at school and it got confiscated. When I went back to the teacher to get it, it was gone. The game that was in it was Castlevania, I got a new Gameboy, but I never got a new version of that game. I also held out on getting the SNES for the longest time. I had a NES, Genesis, Sega Master System, and Turbo Graphx 16 (also an Atari and Colecovision). I figured I was set with video game systems. But when I saw the Super Gameboy come out a couple years after the SNES was released, I had to get it, I wanted to play my Gameboy games on my big 19" TV. Gameboy is also the only system I've lost games too. I never lost them, but relatives would come over, they'd get into my games, have to play every single one, and they'd go home and I'd have Gameboy games all over the place and sometimes one or two would be missing.

The battery life was huge selling point. Think about it; were the kids buying the batteries or the parents? The Gameboy had like 20 hours on four AA batteries while the Gamegear only got like 3 hours on 47 D cell batteries (obviously an exaggeration, but the 3 hours is accurate). Gameboy was much more road trip friendly.

Great Podcast, Pat and Ian. I enjoy these a lot and always love when you make more lengthy episodes. As for the Gameboy, I had one and loved it. I also had a Gamegear and although, I wish the Gameboy had been in color, I never understood the people who snubbed it because it wasn't. It was cool that the Gamegear was in color, but the screen really didn't look that great and I also feel like all of my Gameboy games were far more polished, all around, than any of my Gamegear games, which totally negated the fact that the Gamegear was in color.

I still enjoy the Game Boy. I have the Japanese Game Boy Light in silver. Man, the electroluminescent back-lit screen is so cool. As far as games go, Super Mario Land and Tetris are the two that I played the most as a kid, I still play them now and Super Mario Land 2, Donkey Kong Land, Wario Land and Pokemon Pinball. I swear, playing the Game Boy on the toilet is a real time killer, you can lose three quarters of an hour just sitting there playing Tetris or something.

I remember wanting the Gameboy soooo bad for xmas in 89. I ended up getting it and was on cloud nine. My friend called me later on xmas morning to tell me he got the Genesis and Sonic. I remember feeling kind of jealous and that I should have asked for the Genesis instead. Suffice it to say, I got over that and loved my GB for years. As of now, I would pick the Gameboy over Genesis any day of the week. There's just something about it that I love.

I loved the gameboy/nintendo handhelds because didn't have to share with my brother, who was 5 years older, like the consoles. The gameboy is about 6 months older than me so by the time I got one, my dad had a big case filled with GB games. I had an arsenal of games available and I didn't have to wait for my brother to 'die' or whine until my mom demanded he let me have a turn. And with Pokemania many many more hours were played.

Since this is for the 25th anniversary, I might as well share my top 5 that I enjoyed growing up: 1. Tetris (I've played several other versions of this game but this was my first) 2. Link's Awakening (Best handheld Zelda game IMO...unless I play ALBW) 3. Pokemon R/B/Y (Although I'm not as big on Pokemon I did play this game for a time) 4. Donkey Kong (This surpasses the original for some reason in my mind) 5. TMNT II (Never could beat this game but I'd be lying if it wasn't fun)

Hmmmm, Link's Awakening was very good. But A Link Between Worlds is fantastic. It'd be hard for me to pick the best handheld Zelda XD

That's why in my comment I abbreviated A Link Between Worlds. I've heard many good things about it. I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet, but I would like to. From what a lot of Zelda fans are saying it is one of the greatest games in the series. I believe them.

The only thing I would argue toward it is that Link'a Awakening was unique from the ground up and even though they are NOT the same game, Link Between Worlds borrows a ton from Link to the Past. Still great, though. :3

I agree that Link's Awakening was unique overall especially considering Koholint island in general. Each Zelda game had something that stood out about it. Even though A Link Between Worlds borrows from my favorite Zelda I still would like to try the gameplay mechanic of merging onto walls.

^ Yeah, it's a great mechanic and Nintendo includes it just enough to keep it fresh but not annoying. Some parts of the overworld and certain collectibles use it and it feels like a real part of the game instead of something shoehorned in.

GGs at the time came with transistors that would eventually go bad. I think that is the reason most people don't collect them. Its hard to find one that actually work still. I think they eventually fixed it, and you might be able to replace them, but its still a risk. And I loved mine. I had a number of games but the ones that stick out the most in memory were the Sonic games, which really weren't terrible (No Sonic 06), World Series Baseball, and True Lies. It was perfect for road trips, and had a nice sound chip. Though of course the GB blows it out of the water. I didn't get one till I guess Pokemon got big. And it was a color so not "really" a GB proper. Wish I had one of the old ones.

My grandpa had the GB. He only had Tetris because he liked playing puzzle games.
