I think taking photos of people in the street can be a bit awkward, but firing a flash right in people's faces is borderline disrespectful
@ralphcedricbasco2786 жыл бұрын
I don't really find that using a flash is disrespectful. As long as you know that you are just taking a image and not using it for some weird dark reasons. Also, shooting in daylight the flash isn't really that noticeable at all. Using a flash gets a bad rep because of Paparazzi's way of using flash. ( Full power and continuous shutter)
@JasonHarper51506 жыл бұрын
@@ralphcedricbasco278 the flash is definitely noticeable in this video. Have you ever had a light flashed on your face at a 1 foot distance? It's also a cultural difference. In most Asian countries it's disrespectful. Illegal in Korea, but I don't know about HK.
@ralphcedricbasco2786 жыл бұрын
@@JasonHarper5150 I have been flashed in the face once by a street photographer and yes it can be blinding if you choose to shoot it in Full power. I also shoot Street aswell and from time to time I shoot with a flash, but not in full power. 80% of the time they don't notice me because I don't blind my subjects. Instead, I just fill the shadows a bit.
@JasonHarper51506 жыл бұрын
@@ralphcedricbasco278 I don't think vish blinded anyone but the video clearly shows his subjects reacting to the flash bouncing off of their face. I don't mind if people would say that they don't care about annoying other people, but don't say people can't notice a flash shot 6 inches to a foot from their face. That's just disingenuous
@Monkey_D_Cluffy6 жыл бұрын
i don't find it disrespectful as Ralph said it here already. a large majority of the time people never even notice. My experiences in HK shooting street feel exactly like shooting street in NYC people are too busy to even notice. I know its not for everyone but to call it disrespectful is laughable considering taking someone's picture without their approval is still also considered disrespectful for most people.

Shooting with flash is ballsy, major props for that. I still haven't worked up to that point yet. But I love the images Vish got! It really calls back to Daido Moriyama's work. I enjoyed everyone's work actually! Awesome to see Ian and Anne cause I love digital darkroom.
@bigheadtaco6 жыл бұрын
Check out more of Vishal's work on his personal IG account @VSoniji. Ian and Anne are awesome. They don't pump out videos that often, but the ones they do are top quality. As for daylight flash, if you have a leaf shutter lens on your camera, it's hardly noticeable, unless you shoot like Vishal!!

Vish got the best shots of the 3. Shooting with flash and slow shutter speed (could he have stuck an ND filter there?) give a really interesting effect, especially when up close to your subjects. It does look kinda disrespectful, but at the end of the day, they are just photographs. It's not like he did anything illegal.

To each their own. Also remember that each culture is different. In Hong Kong, spitting on sidewalks and shoving people while walking is....tolerated.... Vishal travels the world, and he knows where and when he can get away with it. And as he said, he's a local. He grew up in Hong Kong, speaks the language. He knows what is culturally acceptable, or at least tolerated. Personally I don't get that close to people and shoot, or at least I position myself where I'm the least noticed. Daylight flash on a sunny day is not as confrontational as many might think.
@JasonHarper51506 жыл бұрын
