Just finished playing it on Hard. Yeah, guns are loud and powerful and overall chaos is amazing, but this stupid final level reminded me of last shootout in Killzone 2. Surprisingly, they both have stupid checkpoints, so you have to replay it from the start. Netheless, that was a great experience just for 6 dollars.

@phaseh2q not really, the game was about the act of shooting a gun, and you can't do that if you keep reloading all the time. That's why the guns have doubled magazine capacities and boosted up rate of fire.

I think the scripted part is a acceptable compromise for the experience If the game goes with some alert system for stealth or have the player figure everything out it won't have the same effect Also game AI probably is not that great back then to handle a free roam stealth mission for your teammates

@@GunsNGames1 the ps2 version is much better than on 360. if you use pcsx2 emulator, BLACK has a 21:9 patch and a 60 fps patch and you can use a mouse and play it all in 4k resolution

Fun fact: You were right about the guns being modelled from cheap airsoft guns. There's an online airsoft retailer in the UK that focused mostly on low cost guns for a while and they actually provided the guns to be scanned and modelled in to the game.

Black is my favorite shooter, i've cleared years ago on normal and hard modes. A few months ago, the nostalgia was so strong that i had to buy a copy of the PS2 version and clear in all modes. I've sold my PS2, but i'm getting an Xbox 360 just to play Need For Speed Most Wanted (2005) and Black.

1. I did love the story telling in this game. The story was BS, but i loved how its told. The interrogation, showing up your mistakes, trespasses, and the resolution. I love the endgame realisation who the "4th" man from mission 1 was too. I just wish the story would be kinda more interactive and give you some choices. 2. The game itself may be somewhat short, but what captured me the most is the completion of the game. Do it on Hard and then you unlock Black Ops difficulty. Starting every level with an M16/M4 with a grenade launcher is just great. Oh yeah, Silver guns aka infinite ammo for that too!!

From all the shooters I’ve played, I’d say my favorite is definitely Black. The fact that it takes almost every awesome 80s American action films along with a few queues from John Woo and throws them together is what makes it so fun. It’s definitely not perfect and has some bad areas, but in terms of overall satisfying and chaotic gunplay, this is as good as it gets.

There were a couple dozen other first person shooters that were far more visceral at the time including much older titles like Max Payne, Soldier of Fortune 2, Halo, Painkiller, Rainbow Six 3.... Hell, even Call of Duty 1 and 2. The gunplay was lackluster for me.

Actually EA and Criterion Games planned to make duology for Black. The second game was named Black: Second Mission back in 2007. But of course there was problem between EA and Criterion and the game was cancelled

The last level in Spetrinev Gulag was one of the most brutal things I've ever played. They basically threw everything and the kitchen sink at you all at once. You had normal assault rifle enemies, heavily armored shotgun enemies, bulletproof riot shield enemies, RPG enemies, and heavy machine gun enemies. The absolute worst part was that very final shootout in that deep underground bunker that just felt endless. Luckily you feel the biggest sense of accomplishment when you actually do blow it up.

Really solid game, agree with most every point made. That said, surprised that no one is mentioning that the controls feel kind of like ass. Maybe it's my fault for playing on 360 rather than an OG or XB1 but the controls have a terrible amount of acceleration and the sensitivity is way too low, and can't be adjusted. Cutscenes cannot be skipped and drag on a bit too long for their own good. That said, a proper remake on Frostbite would be perfect :D

The controllers are absolutely fine on the PS2 version, I think it was made with that specific controller in mind. Also, a today's remake by EA would ruin the game with lootboxes, pay to win mechanics, and multiplayer.

And then I realized that my love for it was actually just the ending when you have to defend yourself at the ferris wheel. That still held up but everything before was that on rails crap which I've come to despise in games.

The problem is that the mission is kind of a one-trick pony, at least for me anyway. Once you experience the graphics, atmosphere, and details once, they don't really impress you the second time around. I think it's because of the lack of freedom. You have to fight or sneak through the exact same way every time. The only time you actually get a good amount of freedom is on the Farris wheel, where you can choose where to set traps and where you can camp. This map lacks freedom in exchange for a more cinematic approach. Take a game that does freedom right, like Dishonored, for example. You can replay it over and over again because of the number of choices and approaches to each mission. It makes the game still feel fresh each time you play.

You said though that there weren't a lot of games out there that were realistic when it came to firearms when Black came out in 2006 but Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 came out in 2005 and they were pretty close to the real deal from what I remember (as close as an '05 game could be anyway.) I've heard that the developers actually audio recorded the real weapons firing and the actions cycling and whatnot but I don't know that for sure. Anyway, that'd be a great game to review since it's on Steam if you're looking for suggestions.

Watch this video while ago and ended up playing to the whole game on most of its difficulties because of this. Even capture gameplay for my own channel. You've kind of inspired me to start checking out oldschoolgames just to capture gameplay of them and have places for them. Especially the ones that don't even have playthroughs or collectible guides. For this game no video collectible guide exist. There's only one written article guide from IGN for this game. This game to me it's honestly more so like Black ops and call of duty 4. Not just for the Hollywood action aesthetic, but it somewhat has the tone of Black ops without the good story of black ops.

This is a good game I rate it a 7/10 the reason why is because I thought it was fun but there are some downsides I have about this game is that if you die in some missions that have no checkpoints you have to restart the whole mission all over again and that gets annoying. The other downside I have about this game is the gun damage aren't realistic like it takes more than like 3 or 5 bullets just to kill someone unless if you shoot them in the head they should've made the gun damage realistic where it takes like 3 or 5 bullets not more than 3 or 5 bullets. Another one is there are invisible walls which I hate that I wanted to see if I could climb up the ladder in those tower things but no there are invisible walls on some sections which annoys me. And the final downside is you can't jump which that's stupid. That's why I gaved it a 7/10 because it's good but it has those downsides I have but it's still a good game regardless but those downsides suck.

6:09 From what I’ve seen from your reviews, you don’t really seem to value immersion or pacing that much in games, which is likely why old school shooters are some of your favorites. It’s not a bad thing, but those elements are important to understanding why people would love a mission like all ghillied up. I doubt you’d like Metro either, since a lot of that game is following some guy and shooting occasionally, but in Metro it adds to the horror aspect, as you navigate the dark, dangerous, labyrinthine metro system with your Russian guide leading you through and helping your stay alive.

I definitely value immersion and especially value pacing. Pacing is incredibly important to combat flow. What I don't value is the player being treated like a dummy and having no freedom to play the game on my own terms. I also greatly dislike it when story interrupts gameplay too much, which can also break immersion. Also I've made videos of metro, every one loves metro. Those games are fantastic.

I know this video is old, and you probably won't see this. But, you mentioned the the M203's were modeled after airsoft M203's. You're 100% correct. But you'd be bafflde how long that's continued. I think even some of the recent COD games still have winding wheels on the bottom of the magazines. It's really crazy.

Great video. I was a Playstation kid growing up (1 and 2), but also got an original Xbox late in its life. BLACK is one of the games that is truly better on the XBOX, simply because the XBOX is more powerful than the PS2 was. What's interesting is that this game was described as "gun porn" (what you described as "GUNS. LOTS OF GUNS."). I totally agree about the enemies being total bullet sponges. I think what's really great about this game: - The feel of the guns themselves (realistic or not) - The *audio* of the guns (as a matter of fact, I read somewhere that the enemy guns sound at different pitches, for a "gun orchestra" effect. You'll notice this if you play again after reading this.) - The destruction, which, it's not Red Faction-level, but is incredibly satisfying (like blowing up the bell tower with the RPG on the first level) - The *music* (look up the OST on KZbin; I recommend "Madhouse Mayhem") - The fact that beating the game gives you silver guns with unlimited ammo for your next playthroughs (I normally don't care, but this game is all about guns) You actually CAN play this in PCSX2 with widescreen support (16:9 or 21:9) in *60 FPS* on PC: Check these out (not my videos): - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6vSnZSGhMx6bbc - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpKUfmZuZbV-o6c Granted, like you said in the video, you can "fix" the low resolution problem simply by playing on an Xbox One S or X. Almost every multipatform game of this gen was better on Xbox. Although if a game was specifically developped for PS2 first, it was better on PS2 (Silent Hill 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2). Black was better on Xbox without a doubt.

@Indigenous Lady yea. SPOILER WARNING, at the end of the game you're told Lennox (the bad guy) is still alive and that kellar (the protagonist) has to get ready for his next assignment. Lennox is a Cia black op that was giving the seventh wave Intel. Edit: obviously it's a little deeper than that I was just summarizing it.

I don't know, lots of glitches, lots of toxic players, too pay to win, your character can start glitching with a bug called "diseases" that can make your way out of the servers forever, surely needs a massive update. I hear some places a single toxic player is in charge of a area and make the other players prisoners in that area, they call them the "communists".

I love first modern warfare (and ghost is my favourit cod game campaign wise), but I think that All Ghilled Up is one of the worst, most scripted missions in the whole campaign. Mission where you escape from Prypiat is like 10 times better :P
