I love your comment about testing how the boat feels in unfamiliar conditions. I demoed the Petrel Play during a lesson with Robert Nissenbaum, and while we were out, the wind came up, and that became my first time paddling in conditions. Very different from the flat, slow rivers I was used to! The Petrel Play I was in (your original blue one) made me feel super secure and I was having so much fun that we ended up going back and forth, with and against the waves, over and over. It wasn't even scary to turn around in those conditions. All this with the boat not even really fitted to me, and that's what made me decide to buy one.

The best way to know how a kayak will perform is to paddle it. And that beam - the Petrel Play is the most responsive and one of the fastest kayaks I have paddled and it tends to be the fastest in a group I am paddling in - even when compared to 18' boats. I have found performance is a function of hull design, waterline, beam, length, rocker, weight paddler input, etc - it's the combination of these that matter, not a couple of numbers. The 14.5 Stratos is a great student kayak - it's slow BUT confidence inspiring and provides great feedback on strokes and you know when you get them right.

A future topic I would still like to see. What should be in an emergency field repair kit. What should not be in there, due to avoid long term repair issues. An example of real world is what happened with Nick O.s Romany, at Matanzas Inlet.

I actually built my first kayak and it turned out quite heavy. This was not a design flaw but a budget and new at working with epoxy. The boat I built was a Glen L marine design sea kayak. I was living and working at the time in Branson Mo. I had been canoeing a couple times but the idea of lugging around an old aluminum canoe by myself was not appealing. So I discovered touring kayaks but the price range was way beyond my budget. So while looking in the adds of canoe and kayak magazine I came accross two companies. Glen L marine and Pygmy Kayaks. Again I didnt have the money to buy a kit from Pygmy Kayaks so I ordered the full size plans from Glen L marine . I couldnt afford the recommended 4mm marine grade plywood so I built it from 1/4" luan plywood from Home Depot. This of course added a bit of weight. The kayak was 24" wide 17' long and 12" at its deepest point. It was shallow v bottom and had a flat back deck. In 1994 I had never seen a touring Kayak here in land locked Mo. This design fit my needs for camping out of for extended time on our many lakes. The kayak finished came in at 75 lbs but once on the water it performed beautifully. In 1997 my wife and I moved to New Mexico near my parents. In January of 98 my first child was born. I started building my second kayak an Aleut Baidarka from a book I had bought at Border Books in El Paso Tx. The book was by Woolfgang Brink. I still have his book to this day. I built this kayak on a really tight budget also in the middle of the desert. Before i was finished sewing the canvas skin on we moved back to Mo along with our new daughter. Within about one week the skin had light mildew all over it . I had put it under a tarp outside for that week do to rain. After cleaning it thoroughly i finished sewing the skin on and painted and sealed it. That kayak only weighed 38lbs. I say all this to agree with your point of forget about the numbers. I have paddled and built several kayaks in all these years. Each one has had its own cairitor . All have served me well. The only time I was able to try different designs was when I worked on the road in Florida and Al. I would rent kayaks and go out on the ocean. This helped me settle on the kayak I know paddle my Guillemot Single by Nick of Guillmot Kayak. Thanks for this video I really enjoy your input and experience. I learn something new witheach video.

The numbers are only a starting point. The overall feel can't be put into numbers. If you think the numbers game is bad in kayaks, go check out mountain bike specs and the arguments over wheel sizes, head and seat tube angles, suspension travel, etc. Until you're in the seat, you really don't know if the kayak, bike, or whatever product is right for you.

Oh, yeah the MTB numbers game is way more of a thing! It's funny how the numbers for my personal MTB are all off for "me" but the bike is super fun to ride and I haven't found a reason to improve. It's all about the combination of specs there. Same holds tru efor a kayak.
