Most boring fighting style? Massive disagreement, Weiss dancing like fighting style and how she combines it with her graceful looking semblance is awesome and the amount of variety her semblance provides makes her fighting style the most fun to watch for me fun. In my opinion Jaune or Ren have the most boring fighting style. Awesome video though.

Agreed. No shade to Critter though. I understand why anyone would think as much. Given how basic Weiss’s weapon is, it is not exactly the most captivating look compared to shotgun gauntlets, a sniper scythe, or whatever Blake’s weapon is. But I do love Weiss’s fighting style. I kind of wish they capitalized on this graceful style in Weiss’s personality beyond focusing. Not like in an overly emphasis that she loves dancing, but maybe a slight bit of cockiness or arrogance to show her confidence in her training while making her flawed for underestimating her opponents. Like taking in pride in it, which can be both positive and negative. Even in like subtle ways, like a smile when she is at an advantage or offering to take on different fights. Not to show off, but because she legitimately thinks she is the best suited to handle the situation.

How and why Weiss has been so massively nerfed in the regular show, since after Volume 2, is beyond me. It's like she suddently forgot everything she knew about how to use her rapier as a rapier and not just a wand. I remember her against the prototype Paladin in Volume 2, and against Chainsaw Lieutenant, and then she just switched class to full summoner, almost no longer a fencer. The closest I got to see her even remotely near her former glory was that like 10 seconds fight against Marrow in Volume 7

I loved the White trailer. THIS was the Weiss I fell in love with, and why I became more invested in the show's release - the grace of her combat, the beauty of her glyphs, and the mystery of why she seemed so sad. It helped that I also really liked characters who sung and hid more things beneath a prim and proper exterior. Her combat and visual storytelling inspired me to make a character, too! It's why I'm also so very sad seeing how she is now. I truly hope the entirety of team RWBY develops more moving forward, but at the very least, we still have the trailers. ; w ;

Shirow Miwa's manga adds so much to this (and to Weiss herself) by making her scar symbolic; both of her father's abuse and of Weiss defeating his trial and escaping his grip. The scar becomes her own: a symbol of triumph rather than tragedy.

The glowing white runes on Weiss’s rapier appearing on Winter’s sword for the final strike against Ironwood would have been such a good callback. Imagine a family technique that they both learned from their aura-trained mother being another common part of their kits.

Loved the video as always Critter! As a HEMA fencer who specializes in rapier and longsword, I'd like to agree with you wholeheartedly that Weiss' choreography is great at 11:00. Your point about rapiers being more technical than other types of swords is not quite accurate though. And this is a common misconception! So don't feel bad! Most swords are actually as technical as rapiers. But I'm not dumbing down how complex rapier fighting is, instead I'm raising up how complex all sword fighting is. I really wish fight choreographers realized how much complexity there is to swordplay. One good part is that it shows her striking the Armagigas with cutting attacks and not purely the thrusts most people associate rapiers with. People act all the time like rapiers are incapable of cutting things as if they didn't have sharpened edges or something and seeing a rapier used more realistically with cuts and thrusts is really neat. A rapier would be an awful awful weapon against a sentient suit of armor, but the fact that it's a fantastical show kinda makes that slide. Like in RPGs where the heroes can still attack literal robots with swords and have it work just fine. I think your analyses are always so great and seeing a new video of yours pop up always makes me excited. I just realized that I have never subscribed despite watching you for a very long time and will now do so, lol.

Weiss and her OG fighting style were and are my favorite. I can forgive the unnecessary twirls because it speaks to her character. She's a performer, her father's prop, and a member of high society. She doesn't just fight- she dances. The spins fit her position in the world and compliment her very ballerina-esque outfit. I first interpreted this trailer as two separate performances happening at different times. I imagined people watching in the wings of her fight, which would explain why Weiss would be nervous when she falls or toward the end, before her potential evaluation. This lead me to believe that the Schnee family- or at least the military- kept Grimm or some sort of foe on hand for such tests. It would make sense, given that Beacon had its own Grimm to use in class in V1. The scar has always bothered me, not just because of what Critter mentioned with the blood and scar not aligning. The scar doesn't align with itself on Weiss's face. Had it been from a single strike, it should be a fairly straight line from above to below her eye. Also, despite it being a scar over her eye, Weiss has no known visual impairments in her left eye. You'd think she would be at least partially blind after that, unless her Aura was only activated around her eyeball specifically.

I really wish Weiss fought more like this in rwby: The way she uses her rapier qnd her movements show why it works just for her Her dust effect look way cooler and she has more of a proper distance away from her enemy with this being a 1v1 on top of it (how she should have fought against vernal) The flips, spins, and twirls show q little more of Weiss being acrobatic yet fast. Most important, I feel like it's easier to see her weapon in combat as it is hard to follow her weapon normally

weiss is actually my favorite weapon & combat style by FAR. the hybrid of fencing & ballet, both fittingly associated with the upper class, looks so graceful and fluid. they’re both highly technical skills, which ties in with weiss’ original personality as a pedantic traditionalist. the six-shooter revolver chamber is also such a creative detail. my issue was when they started exclusively using on ice magic and summoning, the most underwhelming power-up i have ever seen. summoning was like chevok’s gun if u established it, had the character do nothing but stare at it & talk about it for a good chunk of the story, and then finally had them shoot it only for one of those little “bang!” flags come out.

The choreography is gorgeous. It may or may not be my favourite. It's a close tie with the Yellow trailer: "I burn" is freaking epic. I liked the faces of the old engine better. Weiss in particular had very pretty but cold eyes that matched her personality. Her face became kind of generic in the new engine.

1:59 And it wasn't even Weiss' actual actress who sang. It's a very small thing and I know it happens, Twilight Sparkle's singing was almost never Tara Strong in FiM, but it bothers me a little that Casey does all of Weiss's singing, even in the show's later volumes instead of Kara. I don't think they sound similar enough to be believable, even considering that people can sound entirely different when singing. It bothers me just a bit. 5:15 As a rookie hoping to reach Monty's level someday, I'm glad to know he had to deal with IK/bone parenting shenanigans too. I believe I can explain what causes this left hand weirdness if you're interested, particularly since I've had that issue myself. It's kinda kept me from truly experimenting with two-handed weapons. 21:07 #FuckVolume5 So it seems Weiss has always had... oddities, in how her fights are shot. Strange. I heavily disagree with Weiss' fighting style being boring, at least until she stopped doing anything but summon, as I feel the graceful dancing princess cutting and stabbing monsters with a rapier is a hilariously ironic sort of beautiful and fun. (ironic because rapiers are really, really, _really_ not regal weapons in the slightest, historically speaking) That said, a simple grey rapier _is_ pretty plain compared to a pistol-katana-chainsickle, shotgun gauntlets, and a sniper-scythe. I just personally feel that creative use of her glyphs used to make up for that.

Something I like about the armour; its a Schnee suit. Like it's in the manour and the portrait of her grandfather. I love her calling on the part of her legacy she actually cares for to help.

Out of the 4 trailers, White is the one that strikes the balance between storytelling, choreograph flow, musical timing, and camera angles the best. Even as I watch it now, I can feel power behind Weiss' strikes with her rapier because they're quick and decisive. You can tell she's not one to flaunt her combat prowess, but the fight choreo still present as such with how fast she slashes and dances e.g. the camera angle flowing with her smooth movements. The scene that best displays the use of camera angles and use of choreo is when she jumps onto the knight's sword and uses that momentum to attack. That scene is absolute genius. The other trailers also display these qualities, but only to individual extents. Red has amazing choreography and flow with good musical timing, but a severe lack of storytelling. Black has good choreography and storytelling, giving us a look into the Fauna and tag-team combat. Still it lacks in a smooth storytelling flow with the combat because there are a lot of gaps and pauses. Yellow nailed down storytelling, fight choreography, and musical timing down to the tee, but a lot of the camera angles were sporadic and hard to follow, which requires a lot of reviewing to follow again. That's just a personal critique since I'm not a fan of Yang's fighting style all too much, and her fight scenes usually involves very fast camera movements.

I've always believed that it was originally Winter's summon that Weiss fought, and big sis was supposed to have no remorse for scarring her. Might have come up during teatime at Beacon, but I doubt they would have put it to rest until Atlas. I think they made her nicer after Monty was gone; and if they have to tell us what it is, instead of showing us in-show, that's just another failing on their part. If Winter had summoned the knight instead of a beowulf during the summon exposition, everyone would've started wondering... that would've been delicious to see.

Honestly, the White trailer is actually my second favorite of the four. I feel like it had the most to do with Weiss' character and background. I always saw the drop through the floor and the whole fight as Weiss' inner turmoil. The black and white background is reflective of her black and white outlook on many things in life, especially at the beginning of the show. Something is either good or bad, and there's no in between. The knight is huge, representing the massive issues that she faces and deals with, and the knight is also really formal, hinting at her family history and their status. On first viewing of the trailer, I thought she was royalty, which was a super cool idea to me. Maybe it's the classical part of me, yet I love Weiss' rapier, her glyphs, and her fighting style. It's all so cold and elegant, a lot like her. As for her scar, I like to think that since I interpreted this fight as being entirely internal, I figured that she just received her scar in a real-life training session, but she sees it as a mark against her character and a sign of what she senses as her weaknesses. Which is why it appears here, in this metaphorical fight. She's very proud, so I feel like having it be something simple as a training injury would really rub her the wrong way and only motivate her to be even better, even more perfect, even to her detriment. Wow, that's the most I've written about anything having to do with RWBY. Fun stuff. 😅 There was so much potential in these trailers haha.

Weiss is actually my favorite, mostly because sword wielding mage is my jam! I love creating/playing as a wizard that can simultaneously throw fireballs while stabbing their enemies. Honestly, I think it's the best fantasy combo

Tbh I always thought of this trailer as a symbol of the mental fight that wiess goes through throughout the series and when she summoned the arma gigas it was a symbol that she finally conquered her self doubt and started believing in herself, but I can settle for this being wiess’s trial for beacon and when she first willingly summoned the arma gigas it goes back to what winter said about summoning your past foes, meaning wiess actually took something from her fight with the arma gigas

I think what made monty's style of weiss' combat look better was that he made her use the rapier more like a Chinese short sword (Jian I think?) than just strictly a rapier.

I had always assumed the armor was some sort of robot that atlas had created and was used to test weiss to see if she was ready to go to beacon. Like some sort of cruel test that her dad would have thought to be impossible to complete. But against all odds she was able to defeat it. Her scar remaining a constant reminder of her father's cruelty and of her own inner strength.

The RWBY main group are playable characters in the fighting game Blazblue Cross Tag Battle. In there they draw their move sets from their trailers and season one. One of Weiss’s supers is the ice wall attack. And if it’s the enhanced version she summons the Gigas sword to follow up. You should check out the RWBY crew’s moves in that game. They’re really true to the source material and Monty’s fight choreography.

The thing about ghosts grims's mask not showing up may be just something that was changed during development, it would not be the first thing to change. Also the moon was changed, in the trailer you can see the moon intact while in the show the moon is broken

0:37 Interesting! I personally love the background, my interpretation is that it’s meant to feel choking and closed off, and the big windows make it seem a bit more like a cage for me. I also believe the lack of detail can show how Weiss tends to have tunnel vision and only minds herself and her opponent, and with such high stakes for her she can’t afford to pay anything else any mind. Now, I’ll be first to admit this could have been executed better and shouldn’t need much thought, but the potential is palpable

I have to agree. If something makes no sense in a fight but looks cool I don't care, making a fight interesting and make sense is something that can be difficult for some series. It's a reason I love Metal Gear Rising's first boss fight

With the recent release of the first few episodes of RWBY Ice Queendom, they actually included their own interpretation of this fight that I'm curious how it holds up under scrutiny against the original. Just watching casually, I think I preferred the original trailer over the new animation. Something worth noting is that it maintained most of the dust effects that Weiss did that didn't follow into canon, which was rather interesting. Now, all that said, it probably isn't fair to compare them just yet knowing SHAFT. They have a tendency to release unfinished episodes only to fix them in later releases from what I understand, meaning it's not unlikely that the combat will improve at a later time. Whether or not that will hold up against the original, we will only know with time.

I really like this kind of analysis for the show and you mentioned things that I never really noticed, but I think are really important to get a better idea for the show and how it could improve. The thing with impact layering white glow seems to make so much sense and I hope the people working on it can notice that and hopefully use it for the future. A part of me feels like Weiss and Winter always use ice attacks and even though it does fit with the theme and looks nice I always thought that they have a huge arsenal of dust to use and they could try to use different dust types and in more creative ways for both them and the rest of the characters.

I actually like this trailer more than Red (Yeah, I know). Red has better fight choreography, but White tells an actual story, and feels way more like a real fight scene as opposed to Ruby effortlessly blowing through a horde of mooks without being more than mildly inconvenienced. There's more of a narrative throughline here, and it works better for me. I feel like this trailer, despite having no dialogue from Weiss herself outside of background song lyrics, does a much better job of telling me what kind of a character she is. If it had a scene at the end where you can see her family, even just in silhouette, opposite her uncomfortable smile, it would probably be the best bit of character work in the entire show. But yeah, the White Trailer also suffers from the biggest number of future retcons for how the show works . . . and I really *really* wish she fought like this more. The colors work so well on her blade, though that might not be as true when she's taken out of the monochrome backdrop she's in, and the idea of switching between them for different effects punctuates the fight really well, especially since she moves around so quickly--its a really good way to make a character pop in a fast action scene. It also opens up way more ideas for cool fight scenes--if Weiss is supposed to be the "Wizard" archetype for the show, she should have a lot of tools for setting up how fight scenes play out. Just as an idea--Imagine if the cast is fighting over a large void against someone who can fly (you know, HYPOTHETICALLY), and Weiss has to focus on making glyphs to keep everyone else from falling, since they have nothing else to stand on. Then said flying enemy attacks her, forcing her to swap colors to defend herself, and dropping people she then has to catch afterwards. There's way more potential here than the show touches on, and that's a huge shame. The twirling I also think is unnecessary, but does hammer home the idea that she's doing some kind of dance, which really helps the characterization. That, and it looks like she's casting a spell, but in a way that actually feels dynamic as opposed to "pointing her sword-wand" She's elegant, refined, organized, confident, and can draw power from that, and it contrasts with most of the rest of the cast's fighting style.

So I've heard the term "Canon Adjacent" used a lot in Super hero media. Basically it is when a creator wants to use plot points and material from other, related media, but don't want to flat out confirm that the various medias take place within the same universe or timeline. There can be a number of reasons for this, mostly having to do with legality, and who holds what rights to what part of the media's franchise. It also works with having things like tie in comics or manga, where those main events did happen within the main continuity, but some of the finer details may be changed to fit better with the Main Continuity. A good example of this is the relationship between Green Lantern Animated series and Young Justice. Basically one of the creators of GLA also works on YJ, along with a lot of the Voice Actors from GLA, so it would be really easy to basically do a story line involving events from GLA and placing it in YJ. But due to how timeline heavy and date focused Young Justice is, they couldn't just plop GLA into the YJ universe without screwing up the timeline. So to do the story line they wanted, the writers basically said the events of GLA happened, and the characters exist in the Young Justice Universe, but in a slightly different timeline from GLA and some of the rules may have been changed.

I know this is such a small thing but Black Glyphs don't launch things. Black Glyphs hold things in place. Whenever you see Weiss "launching" someone with a Black Glyph, you'll notice that it immediately changes color before the target is thrown. Black Glyphs hold things in place so that they can be aimed to be launched but they do not actually propel things forward.

I know it’s not technically a RWBY fight, but it’d be interesting to hear your opinions on the RWBY fights in Death Battle (or RWBY fights in other series in general) Yang vs Tifa, Weiss vs Mitsuru, and Blake vs Mikasa are all pretty damn good imo (and better than most fights in RWBY imo), but it’d be cool to see another opinion on them

Heres something you might not have notice in the white trailer due to all the sounds of the fighting. But if you removed the sounds of combat and just listen to song. Well Lets say if you have excelent hearing, Like when ppl say you can hear a pin drop. At time stamp 1:11 or 1:12 and just till 1:13 her here note here is so high. that it gives off a feback sound. and if using headphones. It can hurt your ears. And its there every time i hear the song. from different sources. including the offical volume 1 sound track. Luckly you cant hear it in the trailer cause well combat. But damn could they fix that sound. Btw In the fight sceen its hidden behind the Glyph sounds around 1:26 in the trailer. The first time stamps are for the songs sound track.

"Canon-adjacent" is basically something that isn't directly considered hard canon, but the writing of the series generally acts like it or something fundamentally similar to it is. My go to example is the novel Purple Haze Feedback, a spinoff of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure that delves into the backstory of Fugo, since he was the only one in the part 5 team that didn't get their history explained. It's a pretty beloved piece of writing that got the nod from Araki himself and was thus considered more or less canon for years, and when the anime version of Vento Aureo came out, they adapted the basic idea behind it while changing some major details, which seems to be the new canon at this point.

Something about Weiss' scar here: I the trailer, it's in two parts; the the parts above and below her eye are offset, since they came from different parts of the Gigas' hand. In the show proper, though it's just the standard straight line across her eye. I really prefer the version form the trailer, it was easily recognizable as being _Weiss'_ scar.

A theory that got me interested into her character a lot was the scar...because I didn't thought it was a scar at all :)) I thought it was a power up or something. Like ok, the armour hit her, but Ruby got hit too and then she did some crazy moves, so I believed it was the same thing. An upgrade to a better power or the activation of power she didn't know she had until that moment (like volume 3 summoning) because immediately after that she starts using dust and it looks cooler :))

2:12 I thought it was basically a traumatic flashback, hinting at an internal struggle. The whole trailer is introducing Weiss as a sort of "caged bird" kind of character. She's pretty and put together in her performance, but her song itself is about being horribly lonely and the visuals are drawing a parallel between this performance and a fight that left her physically scarred.

Weiss has a close ranged weapon that also has a gun in it basically... But now it's hust a wand mostly used to stab the ground. It would make more sense for her to have a druid style staff with a sharp end at the bottom kind of like crescent rose has to stand it up during combat. But you'd probably have people uset that the at this point iconic weapon changed too drastically

So, I'm a fanfiction writer going about writing my own fanfic while trying to justify ALL of RWBY's retcons. My reasoning for why the Arma Gigas has no visible mask is because it's hollow. At least in my fic, the Arma Gigas was a prototype weapon designed for the great war, where they would drop it on enemy territory. They made and .snagged to animate a few suits, but it was clear that 1) it's way too expensive to build 2) Grimm don't always want to fight for you 3) Geist is a rare Grimm anyways, so the weapon was scrapped. In the initial drafts for the plan, they made the armor hollow to make it lighter to fly and drop on enemies. The fact that the Geist put it's mask inside the armor was an unexpected but welcome bonus

Seeing the way Weiss' skirt flutters about all gracefully makes me hate her current traffic-cone-shaped design even more. I really miss her whole ballerina/figure skater type of aesthetic. God, I hope she gets a more character-appropriate design by the end of Volume 9. One that the animators can actually DO something with.

Something I really like about this trailer is her skirt, it's just flows with her moves very naturally. My favorite moment being when she's blocked by the Arma Gigas and launched upward. If the show had physics like that for the skirt, specially on later volumes, her outfit wouldn't feel as heavy, although she doesn't quite move as much during combat either.

16:41 i think whats going on here. red dust seems to have explosive qualities in the show, so when the Arma Gigas's sword makes impact with her rapier it explodes to send it backwards, kind of like stepping on mine would launch something upward. i think thats whats going on if that makes sense. 18:25 also, i kind of wish she had a white glyph under her since it would demonstrate how they work and make more sense physics wise (?) anyways fantastic video

I actually find Weiss's style one of my favorite, however I feel like Monty and the Team had difficulty actually animating her fights correctly. Partly because her storylines and as such her big fights were very late in the series, so she kind of was relegated to fighting no names. As well I think at the time of the original Trailers there was a bunch of story elements that Monty intended to expand on but never did. I am not fully up to date on RWBY story but I think the MOON never was explained despite the image of the moon falling a part was a prominent image in all the trailers. Though I also think that the story wasn't solidified until atleast Blake's trailer and Yang's trailer.

small thing here. spinning can be useful in fights but the applications are limited and are almost always reactionary to something your opponent does. but yes Weiss does do a lot of unneeded dumb spins just for aesthetic reasons.

I think with Ice Queendom's release, a show that has a story developed by Kerry and Eddy, it's safe to say the fight with the Arma Gigas did actually happen. From what I can tell, Ice Queendom is supposed to be canon as well, though I still see a lot of debate in the fandom. I understand why, the first three episodes rush an entire volume (even though they only cut down like 40-50 minutes of it), and the arrangement of and placement of some events and scenes is drastically different. Everyone meets on the airship instead og at Beacon. The airship takes them to the Initiation, instead of everyone being launched off of a cliff. But like, it wouldn't be as great if they faithfully recreated all of volume 1 before getting into the meat of the story for the show. Even if the story wasn't that great, anyway. The dialogue and pacing in Ice Queendom is quite possibly the worst I've seen in RWBY ever. Including Volume 5. Not to mention the dub isn't great, either. Like they somehow manage to Kara Eberlee even worse than she already is, and she hasn't even been good since Monty died. It's almost like Monty was a really good director and after he died, any actor who sucked shit, sucked shit. Though oddly enough, after Volumes 4 and 5, Lindsay became better (though she was always the best of the main team), and both Barbara and Arryn got worse. I don't Barbara was ever great, but she was fine in th first 4 volumes, and Arryn is usually pretty good. She even managed to be good in volume 5, which is a miracle. Really, volumes 4 and 5 are the only time where Lindsay isn't great at voicing Ruby. Despite the fact that Josh Grelle was brought into the show in volume 4 and might just be the best voice actor in the entire show, volumes 4 and 5 don't have great acting. However, ever since volume 4, the number of quality voice actors brought into the show has increased tenfold. The main cast might not be that great, but everyone else is, so that's good. I guess. I don't know why I went from sitting on Ice Queendom to just ranting about the acting in RWBY in general, but I won't explain myself.

First of all I like the fact that this is going in order second of all I think that Ruby's little expression did characterize her a lot so like Weiss because it shows her mentality towards Grimm and fighting is the polar opposite she takes it way less serious and has a lot of fun slaying grim and use them has more has objects that are made to be slayed rather than wise viewing it has a test a complete and total contrast for both of their characters in solidifies that fighting is just a form of play for Ruby And another thing how are you going to say that Weiss fighting style is the most boring when John exists John literally cannot do 95% of what all the other characters do in the cast and his weapon is the most boring one out of the main cast
