Second, when I look at old Yang smiling in battle, I get a fun, bubbly sort of joy. Nowadays, if she even does smile in battle, instead of that petty anger she's more well known for these days, it still isn't the same.

One reason it really annoys me that they've changed her characterization like that is because it makes it feel like she never really recovers and it makes her arc feel flatter than it could have been. The change in characterization is because she's traumatized, but then she just STAGNATED in that traumatized, jaded state. If we had her slowly opening back up and going back to playful with a bit more of an edge, it would have done A LOT more to convey that she's getting better and show her as resilient. Her semblance is about becoming stronger when things get hard. Her trailer's quote is about the beauty in asymmetry. Why doesn't her character arc work in service of those themes???

​​@Carterb92 Is it just me or Yang becoming more like her mother in recent volumes? I mean the conversation between WBY + Jaune seems to suggest it. Yang gets so angry that Ruby ran off, she immediately passes blame to her. Blake, more or less, shifts blame to Ruby by implying it was just emotionsIts only best girl Weiss and himbo Jaune whom acknowledged any/all sort of responsibility. And even after that fact, Yang makes a half-hearted excuse Just. Like. Raven!!!! And adding insult to injury Yang WATCHES Ruby drink poison. Yang, and everyone else, had a clear window to do ANYTHING except stand there. They've already proven that they can move fast within that space of time Considering how they bungled the topic of assisted suicide, I'm not really confident they'll manage rebuilding a relationship between Ruby and Yang after attempted suicide. Especially not with only 2 episodes of V9

Another fun fact about the malachite twins. because their outfits are based off of old concepts of Ruby & Weiss and they work with Junior. Its been theorized that they are red rose and Snow white. a more forgotten Grimm's tale where two sisters name red rose and Snow White kind of adopt a bear treating it nicely over the winter, and kill a Gnome which years ago cursed a prince to be a bear until the Gnome's death. The prince has a brother, the sisters marry the princes and they all live happily ever after.

5:17 "Why axes" I'd have assumed it was a Kung Fu Hustle reference. Monty was a fan of martial arts movies and the bad guys in that one are a group of gangsters who mainly use axes as a weapon; it doesn't make much sense in the movie either though.

I really miss Yang's fun party girl but also motherly personality, sure she loved having fun but she knew when to be serious and was always looking out for her team, she was basically the heart of team RWBY But after volume 3 she became at best a brooding stick in the mud and at worst angry and unlikeable, constantly screaming at people she doesn't like and when she does make a joke it's usually immature and unfunny, she easily got the worse change out of the team after volume 3 I understand its meant to be her arc but they handed it really poorly. This trailer while not perfect puts a smile on my face for just how fun it is

Best way to describe it - “I miss THIS Yang. She used to be so happy fighting and beating the shit out of baddies”…and its true. She was so badass, vibrant and all fiery (no pun intended). Now, she’s just different…and I mean in a bad way. Its kinda sad that all it took from losing that vibrant vibe of hers was getting her arm sliced off. I get “development”…but she wasn’t the same afterwards (I’m not gonna talk about anything with her and Blake…that’s a different story entirely). Same applies to her combat style…it was tepid at best =^=

I still hold that the Yang v Melanie exchange is one of the best animated fights in the series. It’s fast paced, clever, and it’s a great example of how simple weapons with simpler fighting styles can work in this show. I really wanna see that style come back.

Maybe have Ruby being an apprentice monster hunter training under uncle Qrow. Probably could have some interesting drama as well, maybe have Blake unknowingly save Wiesses life at one point and have Wiess appoint blake as her bodyguard. Could've been a cool story, but i guess combat school turned Mcguffin Quest is pretty cool too...

This single trailer cemented Yang as my favorite a long time ago. It was back when she was so much fun. I love characters that are beautiful or cute and deadly. It’s always a great character moment of the antagonist underestimating them and brings the euphoria when they kick butt. God, Yang was so fun back then.

16:18 it looks as if the saturation is turned too far up on the yellow, making it look green. Kinda like how a safety vest is very bright yellow but some people see them as a bright lime green.

Interesting that the first time you see yang’s eyes turn red it’s when she wasn’t angry yet. And this was just before she got her hair ripped out. Just something I noticed. Also I always like that the fact that both yang and Raven were revealed at the same time when you look back on this trailer and the show as a whole.

THAAAAANKYOUUUU! Somebody finally brought up Yang's hair and how inferior her current hair model is to that of the first 3 volumes. Yang's hair is meant to be flowy and even slightly unkept due to how voluminous (and wavy) it was; that shit added personality to her design. Now it's just one big, uninteresting-looking solid object and it's a big downgrade as a result. Where's the glow it originally had? the wispiness of it? the volume? the way it cascades down her back or the way it would sometimes droop over her shoulders?....eh what do I know: but it's awesome to see someone else bring it up

So with the weird glow in her hair at the beginning of fighting Junior, I think it might be that the glow was applied to the body of her hair but not the body used to give the models their outline. For anyone who didn’t know, to achieve the character outline in 3D the model is duplicated, enlarged, made solid black (or yellow to give give Yang’s hair a yellow outline) and through some layering/opacity magic the outline model is applied to the character model in a way that anchors them together without layering the out line over the color

The yellow trailer is my second favorite next to the red trailer. It's so fun, gets the hype at an all time high for the show proper, and genuinely gives you a taste of everything amazing about volume one. The critiques are all valid, but I also think that it exudes the most charm.

I feel like it'd make sense if Ember Celica glowed like Yang. I think about the aura dynamics of 'RWBY' a lot and, if aura's born from the soul and Remnant's society is based around art, creation, and the self-expression that comes with it (as with how everyone's named after a colour and how Ironwood ideologically opposes that with all his forces being monochromatic and collectivist)... then that'd apply to what the characters MAKE for themselves, isn't it? Their weapons, their very CLOTHES. Heck, if their semblances affect their clothes and weapons-hence why Ruby's Petal Burst brings around Crescent Rose and doesn't just drop it-then that should mean that their very creations are extensions of their very souls, which empowers them with their auras and semblances as it ought to imply. Imagine if clothes could generate from damage like how aura can heal minor cuts. That'd be cool. Say, that could go beyond just weapons and clothes. What about letters? Food? Drawings? I'm not saying food regenerates, heck no; I'm talking about how one's very soul goes into their craft. "The secret ingredient is love", technically. Also, I've always loved how Yang's hair actually catches on fire later in the show with Burn. Having said that, it is pretty damn distracting with how it's drawn and depicted. Here, while it's not so flashy or detailed in how fiery it is, it does blend in better. 16:20 Maybe it's green because of yellow mixing with red.

What really helped Monty's trailers and fight choreo was that he took moves from fighting games. The red twin uses attacks that Zafina uses in Tekken 6 (that attack where the purple glow is) and I think that's where some of the cooler attacks come from too. I think the the white twin is uses Hwoarangs kicks. Most of all, I just miss the choreo... Watching the way the camera focuses on certain points, the old attack effects and how the twins would be in complete unison as one used their fists and the other their legs to have Yang deflect almost 4 limbs at a time. You just don't get this anymore and it sucks.

As someone who is learning animations and more specifically fight animations I might have an answer for yangs face being infront of everything (I do 2D animation but I suspect it’s similar) When it comes to animating fights there’s a lot of quick and choppy movements of deal with so animators often break there animations WAY DOWN. For example how this was most likely animated was with movements of the fight, then the bodies then things like yangs hair and her face. Yangs hair and face move separately from her body so it’s far easier to animate it as if it were just a separate entity and then just overlap it. Because of all the overlapping involved in animating a fight scene you can get tangled with frames a lot and yangs face being infront of everything is probably just the animator struggling within the tangling layers but considering it’s hard to see I’m sure they were just fine with it. Just a guess tho again I do 2D but I suspect it’s similar

God I miss this Yang. I'm sorry but Yang is not the same character anymore. And I don't mean she's gone through some development. She's completely different. Yang originally was this strong vibrant confident beautiful badass woman. She was a lioness. Now...she's just bland. Boring, way to serious with nothing remarkable about her. She used to stand out, now just blends into the background.

This was a really fun watch. It’s been so long since I first watched these trailers and it always puts a smile on my face when I revisit them and see how much fun they had making them. It felt like there was just an air of excitement for any content to be released for the series. Feels good to look back on that time.

Something that's interesting about her reloading the gauntlets, is she starts with orange bullet casings and it only augments the impact of her punches, but after reloading, she switches to red bullet casings and starts using ranged attacks, which indicates it's two different types of dust. Also, the black and white effect was probably ditched because it looked too much like the effect used in Naruto when he loses control over the Kiyubi for the first time.

For as many times I watch the red trailer, this will always be my favourite, cemented yang as my favourite fighter and character for the first few volumes, the quote at the start of this trailer was so cool, I always interpreted it as her being much more bombastic than the other characters, and IIRC, the one in the white trailer was a quote from one of Monty's friends that was a cosplayer, so it's cool to see how much inspiration from people around him made its way into the making of the concepts of the show

Ah the sunny, funny and punny Yang. How I have missed her. Remember when Yang opined that they should look for some boys? When she was the mother of the team? Pepperidge Farms remembers. I think Team RWBY had a very good dynamic in the beginning. Yang was the Sun and Ruby was the moon; both sisters were wellsprings of energy and positivity in their teams but in different ways. Yang was the fun-loving party girl while Ruby was the energetic team leader. They contrasted well with the more reserved Weiss and Blake. They themselves were excellent foils. Weiss is the lonely soul looking for companionship because her family is frankly terrible. Blake is more of a loner who was friendless because her friends proved to be betraying the ideals of her quite loving family. Both were trying to avoid the terrible implications of their family's legacy but while Blake was trying to reform the twisted vision that the White Fang had become, the Schnee Dust Company was functioning as intended.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this- but Yang's drop kick on Melony is actually a direct reference to a character from Street Fighter's command grab. Monty was a HUGE fighting game fan and was always incorporating references to fighting games in his fight scenes.

One thing to add between the yellow and red trailer is that both yang and ruby are up in the air, looking down ready to attack when the line "yellow beauty burns gold" plays in the song, hinting that they're related

By looking at this trailer, I can tell that the fights in RWBY are more based on choreographed fights rather than actual fights (Which makes sense with the show is made), but I wonder how much different Yang would fight if Monty or anyone modeled her fighting on a real boxer or Muay Thai fighter. And at 16:44 You are correct, that does look like the Dempsey roll she is doing and Jack Dempsey was the one who invented it, which feads into my idea modeling how she fights off a real person.

It's crazy how one of the characters, maybe THE character I hate the most was the one that really sold the show to me, the other trailers are good too but the girls dont shine outside the awesome fight coreography (I know the writers did a Little retcon to her personality, but just look how cheerful he Is, nowadays would be weird) also monsters, big enemys, magic and weapons are cool, but the Martial arts in this trailer are stunning. Here we can see clearly what we lost with Monty, the fight scenes outside 2 or 3 exceptions where never the same.

It's interesting reading the comments here, because it brings into clearer focus for me how much this trailer is showing is the classic Goldilocks developed into a teenager, with the reasons we like the essentially foolish and self-centered character developed as well. (Of course, it's also fun just going back and watching it to realize this was one of the many little chances for some of the plot of the series to be siderailed.) The Chibi series seems to be suiting her better; we don't need serious consequences or character growth there, and we don't need the degree or story and writing required to finally get her back to where she can be happy again.

What I really love about this trailer is how it made her character in a fighting game called BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle come to life. Practically all of her moves in the game came from this trailer and it was so beautiful to see and play her in action. This trailer was the definition of hype .... voiceactingasidebutyeah still amazing! It was this along with Black trailer that got me into the show (didn't see red and white yet at that time)

God this trailer is what sold me on Yang, her fighting style is so good. Yeah the dialogue should be skipped, but the fight has so much good action. There are so many cool sequences, from Yang's combos, to the twins team attacks, to Yang's finisher kick, even seeing Yang and Melanie sizing the other's range for a second is so hype

The switch from Poser to Maya sacrificed the beautiful textures of poser for the smoother and easier animation of maya. Yang and Neo suffered the most from this because of their hair. Now their hair looks like smooth bland play dough. Same goes for almost everyone’s clothes

Consider Ruby sensing Penny's aura. It's one of those niggling details that they never clarified, but it implies that people with unlocked auras can sense it from others. Of all characters, Yang's fights seem to reinforce this. In the trailer, she deals with most goons with normal or gauntlet-propelled attacks, but a few get the full ember treatment. Maybe she was just supposed to tell when a normal hit doesn't have the same *punch,* but by the time she deals with the bandits in volume 5, that no longer seems to be the case. Also, she lets the twins walk away after she's put them down, ignoring them completely as they hobble off. For at least most of the time, the flashy background is flashing a color where whoever Yang is fighting, they stick out. When Yang is fighting both sisters, it's mostly a grey background so that they both have a chance to stick out. When Milsha and Melony are doing a combo kick at Yang, the background turns red because Melony (white) is in front of Milsha (red) from the viewers perspective. Once Yang knocks Melony out of the fight for a second, it's back to greys and whites. But once Yang is fighting Milsha, the background is back to red. It's little quality of life details like this that no one would usually notice but is very much appreciated!

Your comments about her hair really emphasize how much the colours used to pop in poser. Like it had its issues for sure, but the stark colourings were so stylish. Things like the red around Weiss neck, the red in yang's eyes, that one REALLY cool shot red on black shot after Adam absorbs the mech attack...There are other times but the main examples are usually red based. even when the black trailer fades out to her silhouette its this beautiful black on red! I actually hugely prefer that to the bland, muddy colours of the new style because, even if it looks less 'real' it felt like the colours mattered, which in universe they actually do. They even nailed it in the finale of Volume 9, that one really stark silhouette shot, that they for some reason only have on screen for about one second, and would have been a perfect moment to just...linger a few more moments. but since early RWBY its really the only standout use of harsh colours that I really liked.

I think Yang would've had a hard time against the kicker IF they got under her skin prior. She was having so much fun that she forgot she struggles against the feets. HOWEVER, this may just be a skill issue as I assume NEO is just a whole other tier of combatant.

The Yellow trailer was absolutely my favorite of the four. Yang was absolutely my favorite character in all of RWBY. But I dropped the show after season 5 for so many reasons. At least we'll always have these trailers!

It's probably just me, but the trailers and the first couple volumes seemed like they took inspiration from video games more than the later volumes do. Yang is based on Tifa from Final Fantasy. I think Weiss was influenced by Amy from soulcalibur (I swear Ruby basically wears her boots). Adam always reminded me of Vergil from DMC. And the club remixes of the girls' themes was also something Dead or Alive did, along with the grab Yang does to finish off Melanie. It's sad they don't do that anymore. Instead the show just rips off whatever anime or cartoon they like or recently watched.

The trees were holograms!?! :o So glad this one got covered, I loved the Red Trailer, but Yellow is the one that made me want to actually WATCH RWBY, as a show and not just a fighter showcase. Yellow is probably why the fall of RWBY is so hard for me, because the promise of RWBY as a "Internet Anime" was so exciting. Yeah, it has some problems looking back on it now (VA is very raw, Yang sexually assaulting Junior, etc), but overall the reveal of Yang's weapon, all three fights, and the worldbuilding were just fantastic for me. I think the idea was his rocket bat isn't very accurate, so the rockets going kind of wide is handwaveable. Also, I think her hair looks green because the fire effect plus the black of the background is having some kind of weird layering issue. I do wish I Burn go a full version that didn't have a random, out of world rap in the middle of it. None of the other songs talk about stuff outside of the internal universe, and it doesn't in the trailer itself. The timing of the song in all the trailers is great, but this one is just *chefs kiss* IMO. Loved your breakdown of this trailer, can't wait for Black (I'll be voting for it every time it comes up until it gets made XD). Can't wait for the next one!

16:14 - 👀 It seems to be that very specific shade of yellow/green which I've seen a few times before that really confuses some people. To me, without thinking, the green is often too subtle that I just call it yellow, but if someone calls it green, I'll give it a longer look and call it yellow-green. You're the fourth person I remember that has called this color green. * looks it up * The color is possibly chartreuse or something very adjacent. And the issue might be color-blindness; in my case, it's possibly a very mild (I think) red-green color blindness; for you, it's possibly a mild blue-yellow color blindness. idk
