I feel like Ubisoft (and a lot of others dev companies) played GTA V in 2013 and saw how successful it was at weaving those kind of comedic moments into the story. Then the Ubisoft execs saw that GTA V made billions of dollars and thought that if they added those comedic elements to their games that theyd make a ton of money too. But GTA is meant to be satire, and that doesnt fit in with how Far Cry used to depict its world. We need to leave a lot of these AAA companies behind and focus on AA and indie games made by people who arent out of touch and driven by market trends

I always had a suspicion that the success of the Marvel movies of the time led to game developers trying to copy the Marvel formula of trying to always add a funny moment in every scene. Wolfenstein the New Colossus had a similar issue where they tried to add funny moments in serious scenes where they shouldn't have.

I'd disagree with the story of Far Cry 3 being about Jason becoming accustomed to killing. Instead, I'd posit it's the story of him learning that he loves killing. The most telling scene in that regard is an optional conversation between him and Daisy. It starts out with him asking her what winning a swimming competition felt like. After she answers, he confessed that he never knew what that felt like until he came to the island and started killing people. "Killing feels like winning" Is his transition from normal guy to crazed maniac still a bit rushed? Sure, but given that the game's main thematic point is drawing parallels between Jason and Vaas, with Vaas being a maniac, I think that disconnect was somewhat inevitable.
@barretguthrie563
@barretguthrie563 3 күн бұрын
I agree with this synopsis and I think it’s well stated. To build on that, I think the “bad” ending feels like the only real conclusion to the story. The option to just re-assimilate into society after killing hundreds of people doesn’t read well imo.
@relvean5626
@relvean5626 3 күн бұрын
@@barretguthrie563 It certainly is the thematically appropriate one. Give how much of the story is about cycles of violence, it makes thematic sense for it to end with starting another for the next generation. Same happens when you kill Vaas. You killing him is him effectively passing the torch on to you. I actually don't think Jason hates Citra for killing him or was unaware that she would do it. Same goes for Vaas and Jason. It was the only end for either one of them. The ending choice is meant to be read as: Did Jason really only do what's necessary or not? And while I think that is definitely applicable, I also think it can be read as: Do you (the player) think there is hope for Jason?
@barretguthrie563
@barretguthrie563 2 күн бұрын
@@relvean5626 I hadn't though of the ending in that context so that's interesting. I've personally always read the broader narrative as a deconstruction of the classic action hero. Kind of a "what did you think would happen if a random 20-something guy started killing people?". It's probably because my bias is towards that framing that I don't feel the story fully capitalized on that idea, and went the "safe" route with allowing the choice at the end, which seems implausible. But, considering the game mechanics themselves, I guess that wouldn't hit as hard as something like Spec Ops or HM. It would suck to 100% all these islands then have the game be like "wow man that was really fucked up". But, similarly to both Spec Ops and HM, it was one of the earliest examples in gaming that played with themes of "necessary" violence, our seemingly inherent interest in it, and if it's something that exists at all. I think that commentary is a great example of what gaming can accomplish as a medium. To have a player interact with and take part in difficult concepts, rather than just be presented with them like a film. Your take on the ending is pretty cool, if that's the case.
@relvean5626
@relvean5626 2 күн бұрын
@@barretguthrie563 Yeah, Spec Ops definitely does it a lot better though I honestly applaud the writers of Far Cry 3 for even going there. They also said that the more so wanted to make "the anti-Avatar" (as in blue cat people avatar)and I think there they absolutely succeeded there. Especially with how they intentionally play with stereotypes and tropes in regards to the island. Also, could you remind me what HM is short for, I'm bad with acronyms.

Brother, GTA writing is miles and leagues better than millenial writing precisely because it is satirical in nature and despite that sounds sincere, millenial writing is what happens when a bunch of execs start seeing tiktok trends and how gen z speak and decide to mimic that insincerity to their writing in video games, its really sad to see, but hopefully just like any other trend it should die as well someday.

far cry 4's map design was the best, by far. all the tools for traversal it gave you were CONSTANTLY useful. all the games since have really restricted the map design. new dawn and 6 tried to add back a bit of verticality, but it's not nearly as constant or impactful. 7 is supposedly taking place in a mountainous island in korea, so I have some hope for it. that and the time limit rumors give me a bit of hope they are actually trying to revitalize the series. 5 had it's moments, but you rarely ever got to use the full toolset, the wingsuit, the grapple gun, rope swinging, are barely ever used. throwing melee weapons in 5 was so much fun though. aaaaand its gone in 6 :C

I think Far Cry 4 had the most beautiful map out of them all (though I am biased as someone who lives in Asia and whose favourite PS3 game is Uncharted 2 which has a level set in Tibet). And you're right, Far Cry 4 felt like it fully utilised all the different ways of getting around the map and that helped to give it a level of freedom that I haven't quite experienced in the other games.

Haven't even started the video yet, but I was just thinking the other day that the early Far Cry games have clear literary roots. FC1/Instincts draw their cues from The Isle of Dr Moreau, FC2 is very much a Heart of Darkness story, and FC3 is Alice in Wonderland as directed by Quentin Tarantino.

I'd be fine with the staple drug-trip missions in each Farcry game if there was more of a reason behind it instead of it being tossed in randomly or being a wildly awkward joke. Why not have the (next game) character be a heavy drug user that is constantly needing to balance their usage so they can still be useful and not fall completely apart. This way we can have some seriousness and levity at times to balance it out.

The original Far Cry and the Xbox exclusives played out more like 90s action/sciencefiction thrillers. FC2, like you said, took itself very seriously and there are so many little details of desperation and brutality - the way you 'self-medicate' by ripping rebar out your gut, having to mercy kill your buddy if you don't have health kits, your guns jamming in a middle of a firefight and clean weapons being something to treasure. Playing through Far Cry 6, there's still plenty of brutality on display, but it's hard to take serious because NONE of the characters take it seriously. Most of 'the heroes' are guilty of happily brutalising soldiers while quipping oneliners. To me it feels more like Just Cause levels of seriousness, which is barely any. By the way, did you ever play much of Far Cry 2's multiplayer in its heyday? If so, what do you think of it?

I feel Ubisoft overall wants to be deep and thought-provoking in their franchises, be it Far Cry, Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed but very much so lately, it baulks out and takes the safest route, rarely ever taking a clear stance. I'd say Watch Dogs is perhaps the most egregious in this regard, with the marketing for Legion being "anti-corporate" but not deep to actually be critical of corporate culture (likely because that would involve some self-introspection from Ubisoft). The whole theme of the digital tech impacting our lives and how this can be abused is never really delved into, just the big bad corpos versus the brooding vigilante/plucky resistance. No actual moral quanderies where the situations are made blurry or nuanced.

Something about Far Cry franchise that bothered me might be lets call the dilution scale. I can't play Far cry 2 might be due to history of ear infection where the game emits a constant ringing when a gun is fired and that has done minor harm to me. Anyways, Far cry 3 set a serious tone with serious stakes, a protagonist who lets be real, a city slicker, sure it gave that action movie vibes and it gave up half way through the game, to be fair, its reasonable. Far cry 4, great gameplay, more of the same with enhancements, a comedically bad story with a protagonist who confuses me as a player, far cry 5 eh, its ok, plays alright, character customization is good despite clear signs of cut corners. I Quit after New Dawn, that game is a good example of "Less is just less", Far cry primal is pretty good in my opinion and wouldn't mind more of it. Far cry 6, ok, good potential, problems, for one despite not playing, looking at it, I see that now abilities that were passives and skills in previous games are sometimes relegated to equipment, to whip out an enemy's side arm is a glove. Secondly, the special ability like a back mounted launcher salvo whihc feels less like Far cry and more Just Cause.

Farcry went downhill starting from FC3 (barring blood dragon ofc). I remember going into FC3 with great expectations only realizing about a quarter of a way through how much hand holding the game was doing. But that was not its biggest flaw. That would have to be the paradox of choice. The game gave you so many different ways to do stuff that I believe most of us optimized the sh*t out of the game. We literally took the fun out of the game. This is what I realized when I compared FC2 with FC3 and was wondering why FC3 was not fun at all. I realized it better when I first played Stalker: Anomaly back when it was released. With the myriad of gameplay and difficulty options to tweak, I ended up making the game too easy that I lost interest. I did not cheat however, its just that the changes made it easier for me to progress beyond the hobo stage wherein I filtered out all the challenge that should have made the game interesting and rewarding. FC2 is how you make a challenging and fun game with a very rewarding gameplay loop. As I understand it, every Farcry since FC3 has tried to be its clone and therein lies the fault

Out of topic a bit,but a friend of mine and are huge fans of Far Cry and Wings of Fire, which is serious about dragons. So why not combine both? Far Cry: Wings of Fire. It’s still gonna be faithful to the book series but there are changes like the characters being older, it combines both arc one and two and adds a lot of world building stuff. But overall the main idea is that you are playing as a group of anthro dragons. Sounds ridiculous, the books can get pretty dark considering they are kids books, and it’s gonna get a whole lot darker if this gonna be aiming for a much older audience. As for tone, it takes itself seriously considering it’s about a group of dragons who are part of a prophecy to end a 20 year long war. And gets terrifying once a certain someone named Dark Stalker shows up in the story.

The sad part about Far Cry is that they actually have 2 games in the franchise (which are complete opposites of each other in terms of tone) that actually manage to have a completely consistent tone, yet they ignore those titles in favour of the typical "doesn't really know what it wants to be" safe game. Truthfully, even when it came out (I was quite disappointed in it back then as well) I felt like Far Cry 3 was the beginning of the end. A story that was promised about surviving a pirate filled hostile environment, turned almost immediately in Rambo the video game... Half the characters were serious (Dennis, Citra, Daisy, Willis, Hoyt), and half of them were crazy loofs (Earnheardt, Sam, Buck, Vaas, ...). It felt tone-deaf. Couple that with a broken and derivative MP experience, which destroyed the MP community as well (which had quite a following thanks to Far Cry's map editors) and a COOP mode that was truly awful. And I honestly can't for the life of me understand how reviewers could give an objectively broken game in terms of MP and COOP 9's and 10's...

@@tominatorxx You were right. I guess back then people were just too impressed by the graphics and this sort of open world gameplay wasn't so stale. Now it just feels copied and pasted.

Reason why u can't fc seriously its because ubisoft was top dog at one point and the got LAZY af! Has assassins creed changed in past 15 years? Nope same game with new paint job every 3 years no innovation same goes for farcry....but as lomg as people eat this shit up they just gonna go with the flow....after playing Cyberpunk I can't play farcry it feels so dated and clunky I gave up

Been with ya since 2019. Weird bit of lore, is you were the thing that got me through one of my worst mushroom trips of all time. I was freaking out so I threw on a Killzone review (I’ll never know which one lmao) and the familiarity helped calm me down. Idk why but a nice, well put together, simple review of Killzone turned an awful trip into a great one. Idk you mentioning your old video brought me back for a bit. I’m glad to have seen you blow up!

I found Far cry 5 especially infuriating because it comes so close to being *about something* (Wierd rural american theocracy and religious fervor) But at every turn they took some ridiculous approach to make absolutely sure the game was about nothing, and said nothing. Really, can anyone in the comments tell me what Far Cry 5 attempts to communicate about religion and the american approach to it.

It's crazy that the two favorite Far Cry games that you have are also my favorites. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is going to be that game that finally scratches that itch I've been having since FC2 where I want an open world singeplayer shooter where survival is the main theme of the game. Far Cry 3 changed the game for sure, but eventually it did for the worst. If I were in charge of Far Cry, I'd reboot the series and make it more of a survival shooter kind of like how Far Cry 2 felt. You wouldn't need to take pills for malaria, but you'd have to do certain things constantly to survive like eat, sleep and drink water, or else aiming would be harder for example. There wouldn't be an emphasis on villains, and instead be focused on different factions. There would be faction leaders as bosses, but wouldn't be on the front of the box as if they're the star of the show. Far Cry just hasn't fufilled that survival itch in a very long time. Just been a giant fun, but buggy playground for 10 years.

Hey Jarek. Cool video! :) BTW, The only counterpoint I have to give towards the criticism of Hurk (even though I mostly agree with it despite me not being a big fan of FC2) is Far Cry Primal. FC Primal has a lot of "silly" tribesmen (mostly Tensay, Wogah, and to some extent Karoosh) and the game was set in -10.000 so I didn't mind Urki's presence. There is a questline where there's this character called "Urki" who has a fur headband and speaks Wenja with an "Southern US accent". He wants you to become as badass as the PC (Takkar, leader of the Wenja tribe), so there's [SPOILERS]: - A quest where he wants you to collect bird feathers to build himself some wings to fly (he falls to his almost death) - A quest where he wants you to collect rocks to make himself a rock armor (he wants you to shoot him to test it... and almost dies in the process) - A quest where he wants you to tame a bear so he could 1v1 it (he couldn't... BEAR it XD) Anyways, Just wanted to say that, but yeah. I recently started FC 5 after beating every single other FC game before and yeah... I like what they tried, but the flaws you're pointing out are mostly valid in this one.

the upper board of ubisoft stopped caring for making games, and it's all about the cash nowadays be from the quebec taxpayer money to NFTs, i having a hard time imagining what the investors can do without damaging ubisoft further, but for sure a bailout isn't a feasible solution right now.

I found Far Cry 2 tedious, Far Cry 3 was awesome when it came out and I've enjoyed 4 and 5, 6 though while mechanically sound just feels unoriginal with irritating characters and no real sense of being isolated in an unforgiving wilderness, it has a capital city for Christ sake.
