It seems like every new game that comes out nowadays is a hero shooter, even when it doesn't need to be. Why? Once treasured franchises like Battlefield often end up pivoting to a live service hero shooter model eventually. At a certain point it's not even about the mechanics. You just want to play something else. This is the story of the hero shooter as we all know it, from class based classics to the modern slop we can't stand today. How did we get here, and is there merit to the hero shooter formula that we haven't considered?
