I used to run PTA Elections. Approximately 100 people voted for 8 positions. 5 people had to do the tally 5 times until we all had the same answers. Someone was off by 1 here and there in the first 4 counts. This is a shit show in the making!

In the UK, machine counting of ballot papers gets used in at very least some constituencies too, and the candidates and other interested parties can observe the counts. It's easy to verify counting machines are accurate and working correctly, just randomly select a batches of say a 1,000 votes or so and recount them in another machine and then by hand to confirm the machine counts are right.

Machine counting is faster and has been repeatedly shown to be more accurate, banks wouldn't use machines to count banknotes if it wasn't accurate.

That's how Australian elections operate! The number of ballots have to be tallied by hand before leaving the site. Polling Place managers are there from 6.30am until around midnight in the larger polling stations. Although formally counted on the night; everything is recounted over the next two weeks by the Divisional Returning Officer (equivalent to your Election Boards) and have to have a final signoff. This suggests a procedural issue with how the whole system is run by the Election Boards to start with.
