Thanks for this series. For a novice map reader like me this is SO helpful and a great learning tool for anyone interested in reading topo maps. I will now be able to plot those favorite hunting spots here in the real Northern California. BTW...glad to have you back making vids. This is a series covering 'Land Navigation,' and not so much compasses. I only use Cammenga compasses. Many blessings --GM

We have not mentioned grid azimuths yet; we'll cover that in the next segment. The military works in both degrees and mils, and it varies by military occupation. The 'Ground Pounder' works in plain 'ol degrees, as did we. The Protractors and Grid Overlays are modified improvements over the standard military protractor. Look up Maptools for a more complete description. Many blessings --GM

This is so well explained. I've heard the 10km and 1km digits referred to as being the "Principle digits". They are the numbers written larger and in bolder type along the borders of the map. Remember that you must use the same number of digits for eastings and northings. Also,since the coordinate refers to squares by identifying the southwest corner of that square,you can not round out these numbers.You can only drop the trailing digits. 473 789 should not be rounded to 47 79. It can only be dropped down to 47 78. Your part one really help my understanding of the utm system click in. Thanks.

It's Christmas, 2019. I've viewed Parts 1 - 3. I have searched in vain for 4 and 5. I have viewed hundreds of vids on "land navigation" and "compass navigation", and NO ONE has had such excellent diction, graphics, and structure to their instruction. many years ago My Baby brother an Officer A"non person" Trained by The 82nd Air borne he tried to talk to me about places we have been to as children... How to find it on the Local maps so that he could QUICKLY VISIT THEM and get the family location quickly and move on to others places that He wanted to see before returning to ....
