Great analysis... and to state the obvious, the pop/classical choices made reflect the characters... Joanne is more straight-laced traditional and Maureen is more pop/free-flowing.

Now that you've played it in the piano, the first few notes reminds me of the song "lean on me" but seems to be the opposite is happening lol

Yes it's the same four notes in a different rhythm! The first time I heard Take Me Or Leave Me I thought it was "Lean On Me" at first, and I was like... I didn't know this was from RENT! 😂😂

I love the chemistry but not the song choice.. just totally lacking for me. Makes me need to hear the original. I think both men are capable of way better. I think all of your observations were spot on, I just don't love what they did with it, almost felt like pros doing Karaoke.
