Rather than 2019 FESTA, I would love to hear his take on the 2022 FESTA where the members emotions are all over the place, they are drinking, sometimes tearful, and they go on to explain how they are going to take a break from group activities to work on solo projects and will no longer be living together as they always have. This was a very important moment for them....whether it was their decision or circumstances pulled the carpet from beneath them, their lives seem to have had to change overnight. Frankly I am concerned for their well being, as since, they have had to begin enlisting as well. Would love his insight. ARMY grandma

These videos are great! Thanks again to you & your uncle for another insightful & heartfelt discussion. It was wonderful to see your uncle really, "get it," about BTS, both as a group & as individual people. Unfortunately, I've known a few psychologists who viewed people in much the same way an entomologist looks at insects; without fail, they were also some of the least self-reflective people I've met who weren't finance bros. By contrast, your uncle seems like a warm, knowledgeable & wise person who's genuinely interested in humanity and who has applied the insights of his field to his own life. Whenever it's possible, I'd love to see more of these analyses with him. I've seen others request that you look at the last Festa dinner, in which they discussed their hiatus. I'll second that, and also, I have a question: have you considered listening to & discussing any of BTS' music with your uncle? I know you've been focusing on their group dynamics as seen in their vlogs & dinners, which makes sense. That said, I also think that an exploration of their music gives a more holistic image of who they are as individuals & as a team. BTS has entire album series' that are conceptually centered around self-actualization, the psychoanalytic process and, specifically, Jungian analysis. I'd love to hear your uncle's thoughts on the song cycle Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow & Outro: Ego (from the album, "Map Of The Soul: 7").

7:15 I loved that he noticed this! Most of the members tend to talk to Namjoon (RM) or towards him, I assume it's because he's the leader and they know he's kind of an anchor for them. Namjoon never ignores or belittles what the members have to say so it's probably a comfort to speak towards him rather than speak as if speaking to a group (because there's cameras and crew all around them as well).

Some people confuse being childlike with being childish. Taehyung is playful and has an innocence about him that he hasn’t lost, but he’s also a really mature person with a formidable inner strength. It’s a very interesting combination of traits that makes Taehyung such a complex and compelling personality.
@erume5776 Жыл бұрын
what you said about them openly giving out i-love-you's triggered this memory of mine, so i found the exact quote to share. it's from a livestream of jimin that he did on the day of his birthday in 2021 "In the past, when I thought about armys, they seemed like my friends or colleagues. But you know, even with the members… we didn’t all get along from the beginning. We were all so different. We liked different things. We had different personalities. The 7 of us got together, and spent time together, and 10 years has passed. So it’s not simply a matter of liking this person or not anymore. I’ve developed feeling that I can’t describe. So at first when we started to get fans, and ARMYs came to existence, when we promoted on music shows with them, and communicated with them, they felt like friends or colleagues. In my head, it felt like we had our arms around each other’s shoulders. But time went on, the relationship went beyond friendship, and beyond that, and beyond that, and beyond that. So now, I can’t explain it. For example, if someone asks us “What is ARMY to you?”, I’d be at a loss of words. It’s hard to describe in a word. Yes, that kind of relationship we developed. Actually, we don’t have a distant relationship, but I can’t simply say it’s a close relationship. But you’ve become someone I love, and miss at the same time. I think, we love each other so much. You don’t talk about stuff like this in your everyday life. You don’t tell someone “I love you” all the time. But we do. We proudly say “I love you”. We have that kind of relationship. I really really wish for your happiness. Really."

One thing I really appreciate about Uncle Harley is how kind and positive he is about the relationship between BTS and ARMY! I’ve seen one too many people claiming to have expertise in psychology and psychoanalysing parasocial relationships in a negative light and degrading ARMYs for it. it’s a nuanced conversation of course, but it rarely warrants the kind of criticism that particularly teenage girls receive for it. So it’s really nice to see a psychologist approach this with an open and nonjudgmental mind and seeing the relationship for what it is. Thank you both for your hard work as always!
@evantesseract737 Жыл бұрын
I think people leave consent out of the parasocial relationship conversation a lot. The idol/fan relationship is parasocial, but that doesn't have to be bad. I'm with you... Would love to see some scholarship about it. Maybe I should go finish my sociology PhD 🤣
@acesquare30 Жыл бұрын
@@evantesseract737 that’s true! I think the assumption is that parasocial relationships are exclusively one way (I know that not all artists care to the degree that BTS does, but still). Even the few papers that I have read on parasocial relationships that acknowledge the benefits of it, they adopt a tone of “well it’s harmful to rely on parasocial relationships for comfort and not put yourself out there” - as if fans are just overeager puppets trailing after their idols throwing out crumbs. It’s a dehumanising assumption that I wish got challenged more in academia. (Sorry for nerding out hahah, fellow sociology student here starting my master’s in the fall. So Jin occasionally chivvies the others, even RM does what he is told. RM's leadership role is more along the lines of negotiating with management and speaking in public, especially because he is the only one who speaks good English. i like that ur uncle pointed out BTS did have to put in the teamwork to be so solid as a group they are today and continuously. RM and also other members often marvel at how different each of them are from each other but yet they are able to come together so unitedly and strongly, and this for sure takes effort driven by a love for each other. RM once said they are looking at different things while on the same boat going in the same direction. SUGA said each person has its unique role n strengths n thats why they're amazing collectively. they definitely worked hard to learn about, understand each other. as with any group of humans coming together, they had arguments n times where they had to try to understand each other's diff perspectives but they learnt very well how to resolve things with one another and u can tell how intimate they understand each others' personalities, and how much they truly accept and embrace each other's unique differences.

@@CelineV95First of all, being down to earth has nothing to do with maturity; so Jimin was NOT speaking to V’s maturity by any stretch of the imagination; and V is anything BUT reserved/quiet. I thought that was a strange assessment too - but that’s because watching them sitting and talking is far different from watching them actually ‘operate’ in their typical days. I would say, they should combine this kind of observation with watching RUN BTS. THAT’S when their personalities really show. Secondly, V’s the one the group has always considered to be extremely emotional - up and down - and ‘wack’ (in a good way) because he does and says odd things and he’s an outside of the box thinker - we’ve seen examples of all of this in RUN BTS shows. But I do think the this man’s assessment of V is off and it started in the last show where he called Jimin the prankster, kind of off the wall, attention-seeking guy, which actually described V to a ‘t’; I’m baffled he can make these assessment in just 2 observations. And I’m also baffled by some of the other things that were said about some of the guys but I take these things with a grain of salt.

About Jungkook--one thing I've noticed is that here and there in various interviews he will say things that demonstrate he feels he is not worthy of love, just for who he is. So his comment about how JK of BTS shines but as just himself he is insignificant--this to me, when put together with the other things I've heard, is an indication that the reason he works so hard is because he really does think he has to earn (be worthy of) love from people. I think he's concerned about what he would be without BTS--and if he would still be loved. I found that when I watched his recent solo work (I'm thinking mostly Dubai) there is a self-consciousness that conveys these fears that he is unworthy. There's a subtle roll forward of his shoulders in how he holds himself; he looks down a lot. This seems different than when he does solo things in a concert with BTS. He's braver with them. I think he loves the attention, thrives on it, needs it in a deeply unconscious way--one of the reasons for his recent late night unexpected VLives (when I see him on late at night like that I think, poor baby--he's lonely tonight). But he doesn't seem to like being on his own. I'm definitely a JK bias, but old enough to be his mom, and this is the one thing that really brings out the mama bear in me. I pray for him too--that he would come to know that he is worthy of love just for being himself, not for being the "golden maknae."

Hi Max and Uncle Harley, thank you for analyzing the Festa 2019 and sharing your thoughts. I especially liked how Uncle Harvey analyzed Suga's personality. I was just deep-diving into Suga's new album D-Day and what he said about Suga is reflected and demonstrated in Suga's music and lyrics. I also really like the fact that your analyses of BTS as a group, along with their interactions and communication skills, reinforces the group's uniqueness. They are truly a once in a lifetime group. Apart from the outstanding music and performances, the group's synergy and, to borrow your phrase, the symbiosis between ARMY and BTS make it nearly impossible to find a "next BTS".

Uncle is so on point(not surprising cause he is psychologist) when he said yoongi is comfortable sharing his stories for others. Seeing his albums and songs it's very hard to share these stories but I am very grateful for that I can gain hope and be inspired all the time. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I love how you put how great BTS characters are, even Jimin was the first one I liked in terms of performance, their individual personality made me sign up and be an Army myself. They really made me happy, laugh out loud and inspired.

This an interesting video for Suga and Jhope. All the guys, to me, seem most comfortable in situations like this when it's just them talking. This means Suga is really okay sharing more, rather than the "cold" appearance he has in other settings. It also means Jhope is more relaxed and feels less of the need to be "on" because the others don't need the hype energy for this type of video when they're all comfy already.

I think they have been doing Hobi dirty.... I keep waiting to hear his Uncle's thoughts on Hobi. So disappointed. Even when attention was put towards Hobi they would say nothing or speak on someone else, I mean that's good of course, but geez.... stop skipping over Hobi already, please. Would like to hear insights or thoughts about Hobi, but still getting nothing here😮💨

But I definitely like what you pointed out here about Suga and Hobi. And I'm as always I'm very happy to see the guys relaxed and just having a good time.

Loved this reaction, I think you two compliment each other's thoughts very well! It's very refreshing to hear an analysis from a psychological perspective alongside a communication standpoint, they go hand in hand and it gives a fuller and more thorough interpretation. Thanks for these reactions and for breaking down bts' friendship and teamwork, you're always on point!

I'm not used to seeing reactions from BTS, but this reaction is so, so genuine from you and your uncle, how he began to investigate my beautiful kings, I adore him. And yes, the relationship between Army and Bts is something so unique that very few outsiders can understand, that symbiosis has changed my life. I am 45 years old and I am a mother baby Army, but since they entered my life, I tell you that I cannot take them away from me, and I admire them very much and they give me hope in humanity, to find people like this in this increasingly degraded world, and meeting BTS and Army has enlightened my life. There is hope in humanity, thank you BTS

I think Jin is an amazing (eldest) hyung because he was the youngest sibling in his family. Imagine JK suddenly being the eldest in a group, same energy lol. He milks his status sometimes (Jin) but I think he has the perspective to appreciate both sides and mostly just wants his members to be happy and comfortable rather than worrying about honorifics.. sometimes it does backfire on him 😂 Great videos guys I love Uncle Harleys input 💜

This was really great. BTW, Suga has now used this traits of him to launch 슈쥐타 witch essentially is a talkshow with guest, but still very different from the ordinary ones on TV. The way you see them act and behave and being role models have made ARMYS wanting to do better for themselves and those around them. As a fan base they are the best. They have even saved lives. And uncle Harley notecing how this could come around without even knowing is just awesome. Welcome to the ARMY uncle 💜

I'm always here for you two. Watching your interactions with each other is so heartwarming 💜 Namjoon and leadership: it's really heartening how the leaders of younger groups look up to him and base their leadership style on his. He's really respected, not just by his group, but in his whole profession. He became the leader quite young in a company that was on the cusp of failing and with a boss that was trying to treat artists differently - including giving them more control. He was really worried that he didn't know how to lead, and he worked to learn, but he didn't have anyone to learn directly from. He figured a lot out for himself, and really felt the weight of the responsibility. He created a leadership style that I'm very glad others are emulating. He's not strict, he primarily leads by example, but when he does put his foot down you know it's important.

Your uncle captures exactly how I feel about these guys, and I think why all Army's genuinely love and care for their wellbeing. Your uncles love for these guys will only grow each time he watches them, we should all aspire to be a little more like BTS with our own family and friends.

Your uncle is correct in a way. V had explained what the color purple meant. He had said that the color purple means that I will trust and love you forever.He also came up with the phrase Boranhae to go with it. That is why they associate Army with the color purple. They always give everything into their performances. And always try yo interact with their fans, whether it's through a Weverse Live or through the messages that they post. I know a lot of Armies are missing the members right now, Especially Jin and J-hope as they are fulfilling their mandatory military service. But also think it gives them all a chance to reflect on who they are and what they mean to so many people. They are all so talented and even if there is a language barrier, It still amazes me that they can write and make such wonderful music. I know a few years back that they had actually thought about disbanding, I am so very glad that they didn't.
@evantesseract737 Жыл бұрын
He got pretty close. 😁 I think what V was getting at with the "last color" thing is something along the lines of "I'll love you until the end of the rainbow." We'll go through all the colors together. So that gets us to borahae the way we all use it now. He wasn't all that clear at connecting the last color part to the love and trust you for a long time part, so a variety of interpretations are possible 💜 I actually liked Uncle Harley's interpretation even though it's not what V said. It would fit!

I loved that he was able to see how sensitive Suga is even though he shows a tougher exterior sometimes. I'm so proud of how far he's come in dealing with his mental health. He's so strong and brave. It was lovely to hear a psychologist speak about him in that way when so many people often label him as cold or unfeeling. Army knows his true self isn't that at all.

Baby JK used to be so shy. He'd wait for everyone else to shower and leave before he does. He used to be so small with big eyes and everything. Imagine how young he was if BTS members took him to school on his first day of high school. They even attended his middle school graduation. V has changed so much over the years. He used to be such a wild card. I still remember his dubsmash era 😂😂

Is so great having Uncle Harley again! We say that you start following them for the music but you stay for their personality and their energy and synergy and fall in love for their interactions. I'm older than them and I learn from them every day. Their strong mind, the fact that they can say 'I love you' to each other, that they can cry, that they can say 'ey you, wow man, you're so beautiful' to a random people, or things they don't like in a sincere way, or are not afraid to laugh at themselves, that they encourage each other because they really admire each other... there is a lot we can learn! Surely there were several fights before and surely they argue to a lesser extent now because they already know each other, but all those things I said before we can see are totally genuine and teach us to look at everything in a deeper way and understand more about ourself and others . If you see it's just them chatting, but there's so much detail to see in those interactions, so thank you for these videos, I love them!

People tend to mistake Taehyung's laid back attitudes and enjoying the journey motto with being immature, but it's actually the opposite, he choses not to let things break him and take the world from more positive pov...
