My man you missed the best moment in this movie. During the last conflict while they are beating each other within an inch of their lives there is a subtle moment when we realize how far gone they are. Cap is on top of stark and raises his shield above his head. In fear tony raises his arms to stop cap from hitting him in the head. Cap then hits him in the chest disabling his power core. They the look in each others eyes knowing there was no going back. Why is this significant? Tony genuinely thought that Steve was about to go for the kill shot. He fully believed that cap was about to kill him, and this signified the complete destruction of their relationship. And as they looked into each others eyes, they realized how far gone they were.

Finally someone see what I saw. My heart was pounding and I was so scared when Cap raised his shield again after Tony's helmet broke. At the moment, I have the same idea as Tony that Cap was going for the final blow. I don't know why I felt that way even though I know Cap has a good heart, but at that moment it was so real because there was no hesitation in Cap in each blow to Tony's face behind the helmet.

Civil War was by far one of the most well planned out and edited movies in the MCU. Say what you will about Zemo being a lame villain, I stand by that he was by far the most believably effective villain up until Thanos. For one thing, he accomplished his mission, he managed to do exactly what he set out to do, tear the Avengers apart. The only thing he actually failed at was offing himself in the end. And the use of that opening motorcycle scene, but then re-using that scene multiple times in the movie from different perspectives to slowly reveal why that particular scene is actually what the whole movie is about, was pure genius.

Another interesting aspect about CIVIL WAR: We know that BUCKY has been brainwashed so, throughout most of the plot, we're waiting for the characters against him to find out/believe the truth. However, when TONY finally believes it, the story doesn't end. They bring in another conflict that isn't just a series of misunderstandings. TONY explicitly says that he doesn't *care* about the truth. There's a lot of tension because the solution is harder to predict.

The reason the film works is because before it's theatrical release, they had several screenings where they asked exactly 100 people who they thought won, and they edited the film after every screening until exactly 50 people thought Tony won and 50 people thought Steve won. So in a way nobody won.

for me it, "what more can i lose?" thor and rocket having a simple conversation about the stakes of what thor had to do and why. thor talks about the fact that he just lost the people in his home planet, friends, his best friend, and most of all, his brother. he had also lost his mother and later his father. he also lost his hammer in the hands of his sister whom he had just learned about. he also had to destroy his own home planet to save his people. you could see that he is angry and wants to kill thanos more than anything yet he is also becoming more fragile with everything he has lost. that line "what more can i lose?" as a tear streams down the one eye he has left. it's him dealing with the possibility of not succeeding. it is a moment that shows thor opening up to someone like rocket who had also gone through lost as they bond and become unlikely collaborators in creating this new weapon to stop thanos. it's these moments that has made the mcu so important to cinema. people say it's killing cinema. i disagree. it is in the same tradition that people like fellini, bergman, kurosawa, tarkovsky, kubrick, welles, malick, bresson, the coens, mel brooks, and many others are doing. it's just in a different palette with different toys.

Ok I'm 6 minutes into this and I have major, major issues with your analysis. You have correctly identified the main motivations behind Cap and Stark's actions, but you are approaching them as if it's a given that Cap's defense of Bucky is "supposed" to be the main problem of the film and that his actions are a moral compromise but Stark's aren't. I completely disagree. Cap is not the antagonist to Stark's protagonist; they are dual antagonists. The two worldviews being expressed in the movie are compelling drama because they are equally valid (not one automatically wrong as you suggest). Cap is all about individual freedoms and saving one human's life even at the cost of other relationships; Stark is all about collective unity and the necessity of sacrificing the individual for the good of the whole. These competing worldviews can be succinctly called "freedom" and "security" and most importantly, neither one is inherently better or more important than the other. Modern society struggles daily with this compromise and how to apply it. Cap and Stark are BOTH making clear moral compromises to progress their own views, and the tension in the movie is them trying to decide whether they can continue to be on the same side as they do this. I'll watch the rest and see what you think about other parts but I had to point this out because I think it is a major flaw in your analysis. I really don't think the Russos intended this movie to support one character's view as "better." Rather it is a natural conflict between two equally important values that the audience can easily relate to because we face those struggles on a smaller scale in our own lives and politics.

That fight scene is very different if it's just poor maligned Stark fighting a failed idealist, compared to a fight between two idealists. That fight becomes a metaphor for the philosophical struggle between individuality (freedom) and collectivism (security). I should also be clear, I really like this channel's content and this video hasn't changed my mind about that!

I agree Tony is not wrong, but I am afraid Captain America is, your on the wrong side of it. Considering Captain America was on the side of himself and his worst possible friend, he was willing to hurt his best friends, his real friends, to try and bring back an old friend. Not to mention, when it comes to parents in this series, I don't care how "brainwashed" bucky is, he killed someones parents, which is something only Thanos and Ego have done in the past and actually finished it and gone through with it. Ego died because of what he did and was going to do, it is safe to say Thanos will follow this same path of death and undoing, and Bucky deserves it just the same. I would get it if Bucky felt remorse, couldn't remember it at all, or something, but he was, under mysterious circumstances "brainwashed" into doing all of that, remembers every bit of it, and doesn't seem at all sorry, and they crippled Tony's best friend trying to save Bucky, on top of this Captain America and Bucky teamed on Stark no matter why he was doing it, if he was right at all. At least the cherry on top is Captain America had to see Bucky get dusted by Thanos, and he damn sure earned it...

@Sav Drako The CGI was allot better in Civil War than Black Panther don't get me wrong. But they used a TON of CGI in Civil War. The entire airport at the end is CGI and many characters use CGI in their costumes. It is just harder to notice because it actually very good CGI for the most part.

One thing to consider is the fact that since Marvel is typically filming at least 2-3 movies at once, and having multiple teams work across each one and distributing their creative teams across each one, some films are just going to get the better team to work on one vs another. Civil War was noticeably one of the best films in the franchise as far as visual effects are concerned, whereas Black Panther was generally a less well-established and not as promising standalone film when compared to the likes of Infinity War (and even Thor: Ragnarok), so the Seal Team 6 of Marvel's visual team was going to be invested in the bigger project. The same thing might occur across other Disney projects, such as in the mid 90s when Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Hercules all being made on top of one another and their best animators being spread very thin. Ironically, Black Panther went on to smash the expectations of everyone, even the studio making it that would typically inflate its box office projections for the sake of publicity (their initial projections were closer to the Ant-Man films, and then it of course went on to gross over 200 million in its opening weekend).

At that point of time Steve had not only found out his friend was innocent but the guy framing him could potentially find a whole army of winter soldiers and unleash them. The real tragic victim of that scene was Howard Stark. The man is indirectly responsible for both Tony and Steve becoming heroes, he guided Steve to his first mission against Hydra and developed the Vibranium shield, then developed the Arc Reactor that Tony uses in the Iron Man suits and left the home videos that motivated Tony to be a better person. It's both tragic and in a way fitting that Howard Stark's death is what destroyed the two heroes that Howard indirectly helped create.

I don't agree with Civil War being the BEST of the MCU but it is in the top 5 for me. Probably 3 or 4 depending on the mood I'm in. But I would agree regardless that this scene is the best of the best, for many of the reasons that were stated in the above video. It was deeply personal, and the stakes were real, something you could feel in your bones. It paid off years of storytelling in the most powerful, compelling way.

Along with stripping the characters down, you forgot to mention how every character in the fight lose things as the battle goes on. Tony’s reactor, helmet, thrusters, and targeting systems break, Steve loses his shield (albeit willingly), and Bucky loses his arm. It’s a descent both vertically, physically, and emotionally for all three characters.

Sebastian Stan’s emotional performance as Bucky is also a bit underrated as well. He cannot just be Bucky, not can he ever just be the Winter Soldier. He regrets his actions but doesn’t want to die. His major struggle is escaping his past and he knows he can’t as soon as Tony sees the clip so he resorts to his only viable solution which is fighting. But watch the scene and you’ll see him tearing up when Tony finally looks at him after seeing his parents death.

The things I might add are that Steve and Bucky only try to disable Tony up until Bucky’s arm gets blasted off. From that point you don’t know how far Steve will go to end the fighting. Glad to see this is a totally impartial viewing of civil war. I'm on caps side because, in my mind, he was at least more right than tony. He was gonna sign the accords until he found out that Wanda was basically locked up and made to feel like shit and tony knew that would be a deal breaker based on his reaction when Steve asked about her. The accords are a reactive, emotional reaction (headed by a guy who has a known history of wanting to control and/kill powered people) to something that needs WAY more time to think out. If the accords had been in place during iron man 2, tony would've HAD to give the suit to hydra or be sent to the raft. I love tony and iron man, but he's more interested in assuaging his own sense of guilt because HE doesn't have he ability to deal and compartmentalize stuff like that. They make it explicit that this is stemming from his guilt over sokkovia but he did EVERYTHING in his power to save as many people as possible, he got everyone off that floating city. What he wants is the power to save everyone which, while admirable, can only end in corruption. Steve is more consistent in his philosophy (he's always believed in people, he doesn't like bullies) than tony. They both switched places politically (tony being pretty anti authority and Steve at least trusting in the government to protect people) so don't go putting all this "broke his philosophy" shit on cap. I can't believe we're still talking about this

Captain America saw firsthand what political corruption and espionage can do with tools designed to guard the people. Iron Man conveniently ignores the fact that his commandeered weapons for SHIELD would have killed millions upon millions of Hydra's political dissidents if not for Steve Rogers' fortunate intervention. Tony Stark would have been back to square one from the original movie. HIS WEAPONS WOULD END UP IN THE WRONG HANDS AND USED TO KILL INNOCENTS. All because, like you said, he wants to alleviate his guilt. It's why I cannot side with Tony Stark at all. He acts on emotion but not critical, rational thought. Ironic because of how brilliant he is. That and the plot is obviously biased towards Captain America, it being a Captain America film.

I know a lot of people like to hate on Marvel movies for being serialized, but you are 100% right that this kind of character depth doesn't come from one movie. Even in The Avengers when each hero had one, maybe two movies to stretch their legs, they were still so early in their character growth compared to when we finally get to Infinity War, and it just wasn't going to work if we didn't have that character development. (Hence why DC's BvS or Justice League movies failed so hard; they wanted to fast track what took Marvel over a decade to sow the seeds for.) In my humble opinion, a serialized movie universe supplemented by TV series' is probably the best and only way to faithfully tell a comic book universe story like Marvel's.

No, Cap was pretty damn aware of the potential consequences. Saving Bucky was just more important than anything else. Take that how you will (IMO Sharon Carter is just another misdirect). Also, the whole importance of the soldiers/Howard and Maria Stark thing wasn't much of a surprise... They gave it away in the previous Cap movie. I mean, it was always going to end with Steve and Tony fighting. I was just expecting the former to die. The movie had a pretty happy ending compared to the comics honestly.

I do love the misdirection that the Russo brothers did for Civil War, but it would’ve worked a lot better if they didn’t spoil the battle between Steve and Tony in the trailers. I feel like they should’ve kept hammering down the super soldiers in the trailers so that we as an audience would be totally surprised when we find out that they were not the main focus for the climax. They did this for Hulk in the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer because we see him in Wakanda fighting with the Avengers, but in the movie, Banner was doing all of the fighting in the Hulkbuster armor. And they also did this for Thanos because throughout the trailers, he only has two Infinity Stones, but in the movie, he keeps collecting more of them as the story progresses. For example, when we see Thanos fighting Tony and Steve in the trailers, he only had two Infinity Stones, but in the movie, Thanos already had four Infinity Stones when fighting Tony and five Infinity Stones when fighting Steve.

While we deconstruct Captain America's philosophy and how it led to the breaking of his friendship with Tony, it's important to remember this. If Cap did things Tony's way, Bucky would be dead. And if Tony did things Cap's way, Rhodey wouldn't be crippled. So really, who betrayed whose friendship? Regardless, I think you're mistaken in your assessment that friendship is Steve's superpower. It's actually compassion. And if he made any mistakes in this story, it was letting compassion silence him about Tony's parents. I presume he saw nothing good coming out of Tony knowing. And he was right. Nothing good came of it. But that's just my POV, and I'm backing it up with amazingly slick, gorgeously edited youtube video essays. Great work.

Sharon says this to Cap in the scene prior. Had Steve not intervened, Bucky would likely be dead either at the hands of the SWAT team or T'Challa who was trying to kill him too.

I think, given the chance, Tony would have reacted very differently if Steve had told him earlier. After this whole ordeal, if Tony truly was out for vengeance, he would have gone after Bucky like a bloodhound. Instead he not only completely ceased to chase Cap and Co., but allowed them to escape the raft after Ross called him for backup. I don't understand Steve's decision and truly fault him for it. He would have kept the secret to his grave, and had no right to. :/

we were meant to be torn apart in CA\CW, by a number of things that happened in this movie, and this scene in particular was meant to sting us, in such an excruciating way, that we would be left in clear confusion of the future going forward, because by this point in the timeline, we've only had hints at Infinity War and Thanos, and a broken team is ultimately how that ended.
