I’ve always loved that Ultimis Richtofen apologizes and stays with Stuhlinger until the end. Unlike Primis, Ultimis Richtofen never really had any friends, the rest of Ultimis was just tools to him and so was Stuhlinger for a time, but I feel like somewhere along the line Richtofen started to like Stuhlinger and in his final moments he really does actually apologize to his friend for lying to him. As someone who’s always kind of been a little annoyed with Ultimis Richtofen ESPECIALLY in BO2 I love that they fleshed him out just a bit more with that moment. Also there’s the line Pernell says to him about how he had the opportunity to fully ascend but didn’t, suggesting that while Richtofen wants ultimate power, he still likes being himself and was afraid of losing his humanity. Whereas Pernell wasn’t and was completely unrecognizable after his ascension.

One thing I always found funny, was that because of Richtofen binding his soul and the others. No matter which universe and timeline Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo, and himself found themselves in. They were always destined to meet each other no matter what. Whether they realized that or not. It was even poked fun at in BO4 even though the game sucked, it did add more lore to the story. Which is why in Blackout they’re always surprised to see one another.

You’re analysis of richtofen felt pretty spot on but I feel like you kinda skipped over something. At least for primis richtofen, I feel like the reason he decided to keep the cycle going wasn’t just so he could keep being a hero but also to protect the other three. By the end of bo3, richtofen truly sees them as brothers and wants so desperately for them all to have a happy ending, which is why he asks Dr Monty if he could just create a small world in some corner for them. I believe he also kept what they actually had to do a secret from them because he knew the others would be okay with sacrificing themselves for the greater good. He wanted to save them, not just save the world. I find it so tragic and heart wrenching if that is the true reason, especially after the ending cutscene of botd.
@unbreakableroad9294 Жыл бұрын
It’s not because he wants to be known as a hero, it’s just that he wants to keep living, he says as much in his woods cutscene in bo3, he’s just extremely afraid of death and wants to live eternally in the cycles Edit: actually not in the woods scene my bad but there’s a quote somewhere where he says he doesn’t want this to end and by that I mean ME to end, that quote along with him getting angry at the book for saying he has to die and the ending cutscene of blood of the dead cement this
@artiechokie Жыл бұрын
Went looking through the comments for this! Exactly, thank you! Like yeah, it was rooted in selfishness, but I think Primis Richtofen did what he did to secure a better tomorrow not only for himself (a name, gratitude, fame etc) but also for his brothers and their safety. "When I died, I felt nothing. When Dempsey died, I felt something. When Takeo died, I knew I had to try to save them." Idk, the line always stuck out to me. How grim yet resolute he sounded made me appreciate his character even more (coming from someone who didn't like him as much from the earlier games). His voicelines in Origins or The Giant also didn't really scream sociopath or selfish leader to me, but rather as someone who is scared/dealing with a great amount of burden. Could he unload some of it to the others? Absolutely. But also shouldn't a leader be able to handle it by himself/put on a brave face? I also read the apology to Stuhlinger from Ultimis Richtofen as an act genuine of human kindness - contrasted by his ghastly undead visage. Everything was at the end, he knew there was no way out, so he allowed himself that moment. Idk I thought he grew a lot over the Zombies narrative -- both versions, even if they are the 'same'.

This is probably the most well made and underrated analysis ive seen for the character. I never really thought of primis Richtofen in that way. I guess before i sort of fell into actually believing him being the one who had to be the hero of the story. But, I guess with hindsight being 20 20, him having left the MOtD crew to rot in the infinite cycle they found themselves in just to save his own life is truly telling of what kind of man Richtofen, as regardless of if he wants to do "good" or bad for the universe, he's more focused on using people like pawns to gain what he wants so desperately in life. I would love to see an analysis for the other 3. I couldnt imagine how much more complex a man like nikolai truly is especially when his two versions of him seem so vastly different
@salmon_wine Жыл бұрын
so basically- ultimis richtofen is more psychopath, primis is more sociopath? Or maybe its just that Ultimis richtofen is more of a grandiose narcissist while primis is more a vulnerable narcissist
@manuelfermin8055 Жыл бұрын
@@salmon_wineI would say you're right about ultimis Richtofen being the psychopath and primis Richtofen being the sociopath as while the primis version of him shows no remorse to most people, he still somewhat has a soft spot for his crew albeit much later on in the story. Primis Richtofen being a vulnerable narcissist, if true, makes the character even more pitiful as he doesn't even get any validation from others. While I don't remember every single interaction he's had with his crew. Typically, they just seem to speak badly about him and are highly skeptical of his intentions. There might be a "thanks doc" from Dempsey here and there, but overall, he tends to have to try and reassure his crew that what he's doing is the "right" thing to do to save them all

Even though the game was terrible, vanguard final map does provide an interesting theory about treyarchs next game. In vanguard final map, the archon, a god known as the construct is revealed. The construct visually is just a big floating rock, but could totally wipe all of reality if it so choose, but for whatever reason it just sits back and watches over everything. The construct has been around the beginning of time, even existing alongside Monty and the shadow man and still just sat on the sidelines. BUT the construct can and has given its power to anyone who it seems worthy, and all the person has to do is just follow the guidelines that the construct gives. So with that in knowledge, I can’t wait to see what kind of dumb shit Richthofen will try to do with the construct and it’s power

I've been following the story since near the end of Black Ops 1 and have been fully invested in it up until the end of Cold War. I had never given Ultimis Richtofen too much of a thought. I saw him as the man child Monty described, but Nolan North and the writing turned him into such a fun character that he became more of comedic relief that I didn't think was worth analyzing. And the depth of the Primis version never sat well with me either. I guess because I only bothered to have a surface level understanding of his character. The one that secures a better tomorrow in the name of the universe only in words spoken by him. At the end of Black Ops 3 he saves himself and the rest of Primis, but it's a selfish act. The other characters were never allowed by him to fully comprehend what perpetual loop they're in. They had no choice and a continues loop does not create a better future, it just halts time. That's why I loved the story of BOTD when this is explored and addressed. Unfortunately I became so distracted by the major plot beats and exploration of Nikolai's character that I forgot to ever considered to view Richtofen's character with this new lense shaped after BOTD. I'm surprised how you managed to make a great character study of him and point out depth I hadn't considered before in such a short and concise video. Thank you for giving me a newfound appreciation for the character!
@UptheAssna Жыл бұрын
The Aether storyline is beautifully complex. I don't think that Monty was evil, he was just protecting his interests. Monty knows that maintaining the paradox guarantees his existence too at the expense of the universe that is getting fractured more and more each time. Also he was corrupted by the dark aether but because he was trying to save his friend the Shadowman but still opposed him in his plans. Richtofen's pride is his sin and what drives him to be so obsessive and methodical. At the end he was someone with certain delusion of grandeur who wanted recognition more than anything. In the primis timeline is revealed that Richtofen was an orphan and Maxis looked after him like a son, maybe the feeling of abandonment motivated him to seek recognition and to stand out. Ultimis lacks the compassion and empathy that primis has but tries to suppress maybe because he sees this traits as things that hold him back from becoming the distinguished figure he wants to be known as. Great video!

"He probably wanted the others to see him as a person for guidance" In my opinion the reason Richtofen didn't let the others read it was because he just couldn't let that happen. Who knows how many times they relivef this cycle, and similiar to Al, and probably due to the book, Richtofen atleast remembered a bit from each cycle. Seeing them fail again and again, i'm sure Richtofen didn't let them read it because he wanted to save them. Like we saw with Nikolai, he instantly accepted what needed to be done. He understood the burden Richtofen had to carry all these cycles, while trying to save his friends.

Great video with an interesting analysis :) Something that I wanted to mention that you didnt was the fact that Primis Richtofen was an orphan. In revelations, monty says some information about Richtofen that further proves your point of his desire to be praised. He says that in the orphanage Edward said that his dad was a famous scientist, and that the kids scrawled on the walls "teddy is a liar". Which makes me believe that ultimis richtofen may have gone through the same thing. On moon, his password is "teddy is a liar". Also monty states that he slept with a teddy bear when he was older and that edward has a fragile ego. Which to me just adds more depth to his character.

I have a pretty unpopular opinion. I think the original story was written extremely well.. all the way until buried. I will admit it was better before moon and Jimmy kinda wrote himself into a corner with that one but Jason Blundell took the story and made some nonsensical convoluted mess of a story.
@Nothingforever192 Жыл бұрын
Finally someone with some sense of the real story. And I definitely agree going to the moon and having those events transpire was a pretty bad approach now it’s apart of the reason why the story went were it did. The original story had left much unexplained and in my opinion that’s a good thing for this type of mode. You don’t see a game like Left 4 Dead make some random convoluted plot for the sake of it. They left it at zombies vs the survivors that was it. Now with call of duty zombies you got extinction aliens, multiple dimensional nonsense, the zombie avengers and a story that didn’t really go nowhere in its resolution. Mob of the Dead was a major highlight though the map that felt like the old school days with new elements.

Thanks for putting it in a digestible way. I've watched lore videos and really just get lost with all the time travel shenanigans and alternate timelines. Frankly, I'm of the opinion that while I prefer the Ultimis/Primis crew to play as and grow with, I do miss the more "grounded" approach of experiments gone wrong with zombies coming about like how WaW did. There were no aliens, there were no "cycles", just Nazis messing around with things they shouldn't and the world going to shit for it.

outstanding analysis of the character, i've never looked at richtofen in such way especially primis. I've always had his primis self as a extremely altruistic person who wants to carry all the burden for himself even if that means he is going to lie to everyone, i had this vision of him especially after knowing what he had done with his kid self to get the soul for the summoning key. But your take makes sense, a lot of his actions makes him sound so much like someone who wants to be worshipped and not someone who is doing the things that he is doing for "the better tomorrow" as he says. I think cold war richtofen will have the same fate as you said. I've seen something like this in some other stories where no matter how many timelines/versions of yourself are created, there's always a constant thing that will happen no matter what and i think they will apply this concept to richtofen as well.
@onlyweardesigner223 Жыл бұрын

@onlyweardesigner223 Yeah, I'm not sure why so many people just can't comprehend a humane Richtofen. Like, him being selfish isn't something a villain or narcissist does, it's something that humans do. No shit he didn't want to die. He wasn't just letting to cycle continue, he was consistently trying to cheat death, so that he and his friends could escape and end the chaos, but with their lives intact. But he wasn't aware of the cycle, only that in every universe, he died. And thay they needed to die for the chaos to end and he couldn't accept that.

I love this video! You did a very good job and hit pretty much every nail on the head from the looks of it! One thing however I never see people discuss in depth about is Richtofen being a sociopath. There's so much more to the condition than popular media shows. He's potentially more of a tragic character just by him being a sociopath alone due to the fact that sociopaths are made, very rarely born as genetics play less of a role and its more of an environmental factor. So this could indicate that Richtofen also had a very troubled upbringing as well, as sociopaths are formed from severe/extreme abuse before puberty usually when they're a small child from I believe from the ages of 4-9. It could also be why Primis sort of adopted Maxis as a sort of father figure because his parents probably didn't show him the love and care he needed as a child. I would also like to point out that Ultimis does say something about Primis wetting the bed in the barracks one night and adult bed wetting can be from a number of things like PTSD related symptoms and trauma that could be connected to his childhood. And since all Richtofen's are the same or are born from the same foundation I always have to wonder what his childhood was like. More often than not, sociopaths desire acceptance(which I will say Richtofen canonically sleeps with a teddy bear so that could be a nice pointer to that lack of comfort or belonging), control, and attention due to their childhood being taken away from them and their innocence being shattered at such a young age. Which does lead into Richtofen being called a man child by Maxis, as Richtofen himself seems be the most child like out of the others. It's also not completely out of the question either as sociopaths also experience little to no empathy, which Richtofen does seem to have a bit of empathy and it seems to grow as he spends time with the group. I've also seen sociopathy being described by those who have it as "a normal person's emotions but underwater" which I've always thought was a nice way to explain it. If you ever add more to this character study I'd love to see you go more in depth about this side of him! It doesn't get talked about enough and has the potential to shed more light on this character!
@Real_RUBB3R Жыл бұрын
While they are technically built on the same foundation, they're clearly different people, same as the other members of the crew and their counterparts, because personality and experiences is what makes a person, not the physical form. However, this had made me wonder: Before Ultimis Richtofen was corrupted by the MPD and element 115, was he similar to what we see in Primis Richtofen? Ultimis Richtofen clearly hated Maxis, and from what I can tell, Primis Richtofen was fond of his Maxis counterpart. It's entirely possible that aside from that, Primis Richtofen wouldn't be too different from Ultimis. The other members of the Primis crew kinda seem like more matured and down-to-earth versions of themselves. Nikolai used to have a drinking problem but moved past it. Dempsey is still energetic and like your stereotypical American soldier and whatnot, but very toned down. And Takeo seems just like a more battle-hardened and serious version of Ultimis.

He is a very interesting yet complex character with much to tell, but i would say my favorite thing about him is that despite knowing a lot about basically everything, he'll do whatever it takes to save his allies and the multiverse. Even if it means a great sacrifice and thatI really appreciate. To us, he was a hero and he always will.

I would add that richtofen would always have to be duped some point. Maxis decided to join the axis and didnt give richtofen the chance to shine. @theGODZILLA150 Жыл бұрын
Quite a few people have brought it up so far, so maybe. Although Richtofen is by far the most complex of the group. I have been considering doing something on the Shadowman. We’ll see though.

@@theGODZILLA150 May I ask on why The ShadowMan? I'm curious on why him over the Ultimis/Primis cast

I could be wrong, but I think he was one of the few characters trying to do the right thing, even though he’s portrayed as the big bad guy

But there are two endings to buried. One of which, favours richtofen
@theGODZILLA150 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but that one isn’t officially considered canon. Although I did make a theory video years ago about how it could still fit into the story

Cant blame Eddie for wanting the people who are guilty of killing his family being in pain and suffering

Richtofen DID make sacrifices though, killing an innocent version of himself, to preserve his soul so that eventually the primis crew can insert their souls into their new child bodies. That was the plan… it’s a shame it didn’t pan out in bo4. That was the Better Tomorrow.
@theGODZILLA150 Жыл бұрын
True. He tried very hard to justify his actions, but killing his child self in 2210 was one of the few things he felt bad about
@CodLoreFacts Жыл бұрын
That's Monty's plan. They would have been in their child forms unable to break the cycle/resolve the paradox. That's quite literally the bad ending.

I love the Jimmy era of Zombies. I'd give anything to see how he would've continued the story past Buried. I never really enjoyed the Blundell era (BO4 is completely errible). And the CW and Vanguard era also suck and just may as well be a whole different series.

While Richthofen is my favourite character, it’s never sat right with me that he got a second chance in the new world with Sam at the end of BO4. I mean, c’mon treyarch. Yes he’s a fan favourite but the man is, was, a literal N*zi.
@theGODZILLA150 Жыл бұрын
Technically it was “innocent Richtofen” that got to live, but it is still a little weird. The whole point of the original four dying was because their souls were tied to the aether, but maybe Richtofen’s surviving soul is why the whole dark aether story even happens
