With the Zafiro might be worth considering that Better call Saul takes place at least a while before the scene from Breaking Bad. It's possible, like many real world brands, it went out of production and became much more rare. Additionally, it's also possible/likely that it was a smaller, more localized, brand. Liquor distribution is a cluster in the US and it could easily be that a bottle that is common place in one state may be a highly prized and rare thing even a state over, nevermind across national borders.

So for don eladio its like if you brought a Coke flavor that is out of production at a get together?😂😂 Oooh Gustavo a can of Peppermint Coca Cola, Let us celebrate

@@ivanm3342 sort of, but sealed bottles of alcohol don’t go bad. More like bringing a bottle of Jim Beam Black, with the 8 year labeling. It was a $20 bottle that was available everywhere that sells for about $180 a bottle today, if you can find it. It’s not amazing, it’s just a $20 bottle, but because you can’t get it anymore it becomes more valuable. The same could be true on a bottle that sold for $500 when it was being made, and would be perfectly reasonable for that same much more rare to begin with bottle to be worth $20,000 a couple years later.

My thoughts exactly
@ZachCG
@ZachCG 7 ай бұрын
i was thinking maybe it's the other way around, maybe the bottle gus brought him is actually an older, rarer, "original" zafiro añejo, and the stuff they produce nowadays is like a watered down bastardized version for mass consumption. sure it's still $500 but it probably doesn't hold a candle to "classic" zafiro. maybe don eladio is picky, maybe he's complained before that he misses the old stuff and there's just no way to get it anymore. idk, just spitballin'
@johngaltline9933
@johngaltline9933 7 ай бұрын
@@ZachCG entirely possible that the “recipe” was changed an an old bottle is better… but that’s not generally how tequila, gin, vodka, or other purified liquor works. Whiskey and wines get unique flavors from the particular barrels they are made/aged in as well as the climate while in the barrels, so there can be pretty noticeable changes in the flavor from one year to another, or even one barrel to another. With clear liquor the goal, on the other hand, and sign of a quality product, is having perfect consistency from one bottle to another, even when bottled years apart.

There isn't necessarily a continuity error with Zafiro Añejo. It's possible that the bottle that Gus brought Eladio is much more expensive and rare because it is a discontinued vintage, perhaps even decades old, whereas the bottles that Saul bought were new enough to be expensive but not in "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" territory. The Zafiro Añejo bottle that Gus gives Eladio does look different and much older than the bottles that appear in Better Call Saul, even though the events in the Better Call Saul time line are chronologically before the mass poisoning perpetrated by Gus.

I worked for Venezia’s. We actually do slice the pizzas. That was just something that was made up for the show. The company started out in New Mexico, but shifted over to Arizona once the owner handed over the business to his nephew. It’s still going strong, and the owner is an awesome dude. He’s like Gus, minus the drug empire. He cares for his employees, he knows everyone’s name, and he’ll even drive down to different restaurants to help them out during their rushes.

So there actually is an easy explanation for the seemingly incongruent story surrounding the Tequila. I don't drink anymore but I have friends and acquaintances that are straight up fine liquor aficionados and it's actually extremely common for a new brand, blend, whatever, to hit the market at X amount and over time explode into a massive brand that's highly sought after which drives the price up and makes finding it very difficult. A huge reason is the secondary market sellers will buy it up and inflate the price and make availability next to nil. A bottle can hit the market at $50 and within a matter of months or years shoot up into the hundreds with the secondary market price even higher than that. It literally happens all the time with all kinds of booze. That would explain why it was readily available and expensive but not as much as some in BCS and had a cartel boss saying "impossible" when he sees it in BB.

Madrigal Electromotive the largest business in the BB/BCS universe didn't get a mention. Still amazing how both series created their own world with real and fictional recurring businesses and a great topic. So many in fact that, that just naming them all and the background of each would make this video an hour longer.

My head canon for the Zafiro Anejo is that in universe during the vent of better call saul, the Zafiro Anejo tequila was expensive but still commonly availiable, however by the time of breaking bad the drink had become rare due to artifical scarcity or something else. Therefore in the breaking bad timeline Don Eladio is impressed because Zafiro Anejo is not only expensive but it is hard to come by.

Great video. In particular with the tequila it could also be explained why Don Eladio was so excited about the bottle and the issue of continuity. The bottle given to him by Gus perhaps although looking the same was a “reserve” or numbered, early production of the tequila especially considering the decorative lined wooden box it comes in. All simply speculation but I do really enjoy the level of detail the businesses go to in the universe and have always been fascinated by Madrigal and their long corporate reach, the fact that they owned so many subsidiaries and even had their own Gulfstream for executives!

Oh sure, the owner of Venezia's Pizzeria saved a bundle when he converted to non-sliced pizza, but what about the cost to humanity? Fredo Abbondanza, the pizzeria's longstanding pizza slicer for over 30 years, was put out into the cold of the street and forced to give hand jobs for pocket change just to make a living, so the next time you enjoy an unsliced pizza and the extra ten cents you save, think of poor Fredo. You people and your cost cutting by not pizza cutting make me sick.

Great content Kino, always enjoyed these details that breath so much life into the show unique world, I love it! My thinking about the Zafiro tequila is I always imagined that the one Gus gifted is like an old, original recipe and taste of a later standardized / mainstreamed brand. Or a special early edition that is rare and expensive.

When it comes to the safirio angejo, the price may have been lower when it is first released as a limited supply, but then rapidly increasing in the secondary market after supplies run out. It's a fairly common thing when it comes to modern day bourbon. Secondary prices can skyrocket when the run is over and bottles of certain vintage become harder to find.

In the drinking world expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always available. The tequila could’ve been more accessible in BCS while becoming more popular and less available while more sought after in BB. This video is great, and while I came into it expecting you to analyse the business practices and whether they'd hide a meth business, this is also an awesome idea. I do have to mention a few things though. Every reviewer and reactor I've seen describes Pollos as a "Restaurant" when it's clearly a chain. Gus has one location in Mexico to begin with, and now he's moved it to ABQ, sure, but a single restaurant in one city wouldn't have a corporation behind it like Madrigal, which isn't even mentioned here. Not to mention, burning down the location in BCS would be a massive blow to his business and put it as risk of being exposed to the cops if it was only the one location. You had your livelihood burned down and still live like this? Wikipedia also calls it a chain of restaurants. Take that as you will. A few other businesses that aren't mentioned that are super integral to the story, besides Madrigal include; Vamanos Pest Control, which was hiding a meth business and a bunch of criminal neo-nazis, who also have ties with Kandy Welding from El Camino and also Madrigal. There's also Lavandería Brillante, the laundromat Gus uses to hide the meth lab. You could even discuss Dog House, where a lot of Jesse's deals go down and Kim and Jimmy hang out, which is a real place in ABQ!
