I love that line he really brought Walt back down to earth and crushed his ego
@Asofia20

If you think about it, it really hurt Gus’s ego more. He was dead set on not revealing himself, but as soon as Walt compares him to himself, Gus immediately reveals himself. Everyone in this universe has an ego. Obviously, Walt’s is the most intense, but Gus has an ego too.

@@Asofia20 Cluster B Personality Disorders, they are called Cluster because they very rarely are just one. Most are Co-Morbid Narcissistic Personality Disordered. It's not Ego, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a Sub-Type of Psychopathology, NPD coupled with another Cluster B is what makes these people dangerous. I love the misleading toys laying around, and his subtle reference to kids not eating the soup. It took me a few watches to notice the subtle hints at manipulating Walt. When Jesse comes for dinner with Gus, I don’t see them anymore. Makes me imagine Gus has a prop library down in his secret basement tunnel lair.

The other possibility is that his backstory wasn’t fully fleshed out and he was initially written as a family man with kids
@jxsh03

@@zizoumonk10 Im confident it was intentional and planned by that point. Its very clear how deep he goes to manipulate people. When they made Season 2 Gus wasnt guaranteed to end up as a main antagonist/character for the future so they likely didnt have anything planned there. But Season 3 they definitely had a very good idea what they wanted to do with the character. They planted many threads in Season 3 for Gus' character to expand on them in Season 4 (his dynamic with Hector and the Salamancas, Hector calling him Generalissimo, etc.). Looking closely every toy seems strangely perfectly placed.

@@kiro253 Some people who act "too nice" are genuinely good people. Of course, general suspicion of one's character because of a gut feeling isn't wrong and you have the right to be curious, but it's not a good idea to jump to conclusions if you're in the position of stranger. Especially not a good idea to call the police on someone who's... being nice? (Not really talking about Gus here, just general strangers you come across.) Also want to add that if you feel like a polite person is secretly horrible, don't investigate and invade their privacy. Because even if you happen to be right about them, you'll still be in the wrong for, y'know, invading someone's privacy.

Most owners don't wish to contact the police unless absolutely necessary. Even the non drug kingpin owners, as constant police presence causes certain stereotypes about the business. The only time Gus got frustrated with the Salamancas showing up was when Hector came in causing problems. Lalo was extremely polite and seemed like a normal person. The cousins simply just sat there being weird. Seeing as how much Gus invests into the local community and by extension the local PD and DEA members, it would just seem that he doesn't want to waste police time with manners he can handle on his own.

His mindset stems from a desire for revenge and him being willing to do whatever is required for that. I mean, in a way, one of the core themes of The Sopranos is that Tony's attitude of "macho big boss guy" ("strong silent type" as the show puts it) is losing relevance, both in his life and in society. He grew up with an idea of what a head of a family (both a mob "family" and a domestic family) should look like. Gus Fring is kind of the antithesis - he doesn't have any actual family (on-screen at least), prefers to hide in plain daylight (his cover operation is not a seedy nightclub, but a family-friendly fast food chain), effects an affable persona, doesn't flaunt his power openly, and seems to require no external validation of who he is other than the sheer, cold success of his operation. And while Tony mostly employs people either because they're long-time associates, Gus hires people because he thinks they're competent and sufficiently trustworthy (Mike being the best example, and his doubts abut Walter confirming that hiring him wasn't exactly something he did lightly). Then again, Tony is just harvesting money, he doesn't need to run a business. He just needs to stay out of the authorities' and other families' face while his guys squeeze money out of people. Gus is running what is essentially a highly complex (and technologically sophisticated) illegal enterprise, so he probably has need for actual talent.

Gus' subtle change in facial expression when Walt says that he thinks they're alike is one of my favorite moments of the show. He wants to keep up the facade but that statement makes him take the mask off. Brilliant.

It was a true face change tho. The cartel believes that Gus' business belong to the cartel, so when Gus said he is the owner Lalo was astounded, like he's hearing someone admitting a crime.

@@ejsampana426 no, lalo was being lalo, acting like he didn’t know who Gustavo is.. it wasn’t a true face change it was more of a fake persona acting like he didn’t know who the owner was, & was shocked to see it was an employee who asked how’s your food.. bc in the office he goes “and you’re Gustavo Fring” he knew who he was.

Interesting to consider that had his standards of perfection not been so extreme he likely would’ve listened to his warning signs to avoid Walter and just had Gale learn the product from Jesse. It still would have been better than what they were doing but he would’ve driven himself nuts always knowing that even if it was better than before they’d never truly master perfection of the best product unless the process was handed down from Walt and his standards that matched those of Gus. The chase of that feeling would be no financial difference between Jesse or Walt but the standards negate that and led to so many problems. Bypassing concerns for the product in general had to have been lucrative to accept the concerns but still fun to ponder that working to bring Walter in was likely the need to meet the highest level of standards possible over being financially motivated since Jesse probably would’ve gotten to the same monetary result.
