I love the misleading toys laying around, and his subtle reference to kids not eating the soup. It took me a few watches to notice the subtle hints at manipulating Walt. @@zizoumonk10 Im confident it was intentional and planned by that point. Its very clear how deep he goes to manipulate people. When they made Season 2 Gus wasnt guaranteed to end up as a main antagonist/character for the future so they likely didnt have anything planned there. But Season 3 they definitely had a very good idea what they wanted to do with the character. They planted many threads in Season 3 for Gus' character to expand on them in Season 4 (his dynamic with Hector and the Salamancas, Hector calling him Generalissimo, etc.). Especially not a good idea to call the police on someone who's... being nice? (Not really talking about Gus here, just general strangers you come across.) Most owners don't wish to contact the police unless absolutely necessary. Even the non drug kingpin owners, as constant police presence causes certain stereotypes about the business. The only time Gus got frustrated with the Salamancas showing up was when Hector came in causing problems. Lalo was extremely polite and seemed like a normal person. The cousins simply just sat there being weird. I just binged the Sopranos, and Tony didn't have the makings of a varsity Los Pollos manager...he would have loved the chicken though.
@monsterfurby7 ай бұрын
I mean, in a way, one of the core themes of The Sopranos is that Tony's attitude of "macho big boss guy" ("strong silent type" as the show puts it) is losing relevance, both in his life and in society. He grew up with an idea of what a head of a family (both a mob "family" and a domestic family) should look like. Gus Fring is kind of the antithesis - he doesn't have any actual family (on-screen at least), prefers to hide in plain daylight (his cover operation is not a seedy nightclub, but a family-friendly fast food chain), effects an affable persona, doesn't flaunt his power openly, and seems to require no external validation of who he is other than the sheer, cold success of his operation. And while Tony mostly employs people either because they're long-time associates, Gus hires people because he thinks they're competent and sufficiently trustworthy (Mike being the best example, and his doubts abut Walter confirming that hiring him wasn't exactly something he did lightly). Then again, Tony is just harvesting money, he doesn't need to run a business. He just needs to stay out of the authorities' and other families' face while his guys squeeze money out of people. Gus is running what is essentially a highly complex (and technologically sophisticated) illegal enterprise, so he probably has need for actual talent.

Interesting to consider that had his standards of perfection not been so extreme he likely would’ve listened to his warning signs to avoid Walter and just had Gale learn the product from Jesse. It still would have been better than what they were doing but he would’ve driven himself nuts always knowing that even if it was better than before they’d never truly master perfection of the best product unless the process was handed down from Walt and his standards that matched those of Gus. The chase of that feeling would be no financial difference between Jesse or Walt but the standards negate that and led to so many problems. Bypassing concerns for the product in general had to have been lucrative to accept the concerns but still fun to ponder that working to bring Walter in was likely the need to meet the highest level of standards possible over being financially motivated since Jesse probably would’ve gotten to the same monetary result.

I like how every public interaction Gus has with Walt, Walt is like a stuttering child caught doing something he shouldn’t have while Gus keeps up a flawless poker face

I'm really glad I watched the show before Gus became a meme. The twist of the unassuming extra being the menacing crime lord Walt's looking for is too good.

I think it's funny that there must've been Karen customers demanding to speak to the manager at Pollos Hermanos, not realising how much mortal danger they are putting themselves into.

7:20 "kids won't eat it" this line throws me because it suggests that he is married with children. however we know he lives alone and is probably gay. was it a throw away line? was he lying to Walter? discuss
