Really appreciate the shout-out Zack. Let's get another podcast in at some point and talk some of this technical stuff through!

Funny thing is now that I'm learning the olympic lifts , I feel that I have an advantage with weightlifting channels becoming relatively popular . If I wanted to learn the olympic lifts a few years ago I would have maybe used terrible technique for years and not realised it .. hell I would have had to learn it from a crossfitter or something .. but now with so many people delievering criticism back and forth and experiementing and teaching .. etc .. learning proper weightlifting technique is easier than ever because I'm litteraly learning from people who learned from people who learned from their mistakes , and I appreciate that !
@normaaliihminen7225 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying you shouldn't learn from internet because everything can call them expert on something in internet but It should go without saying you should consult to actual weightlifter. In other words don't rely on info sourced from internet.
@authenticbaguette66735 жыл бұрын
Normaali Ihminen I agree , however that's not an option for me since the closest weightlifting gym to me is a few hundred kilometers away .. I'm not going to let that be an excuse for me to be lazy , though . I'm willing to dig through a lot of nonsense to find good advice

I do 'clean without contact' as a warm up to focus on staying connected with the barbell in turnover. It helped a lot!

This was very helpful. Made me realize I’ve been overemphasizing/exaggerating the triple extension which even if it’s by a tenth of a second throws off the entire lift by making it slower and less smooth
@michaelsenft36085 жыл бұрын
Great job. As noted previously, you have a gift for coaching, for identifying the cues that drive better results. A shame coaches who employ the clean for athletes in other sports dont take the technical aspects seriously - better mechanics, better performance shouldn’t be only focused on weightlifters. Inspiring to get back in the gym and apply these tips! I’m 61 but believe one is never too old to improve - thank you for the continuing insight
@nickwysoczanskyj7855 жыл бұрын
That was really helpful! And I feel better about my clean now. Technically speaking. I’m weak as shit, obviously, but at least I now know that my form is going in the right direction. I’ve just done day 20 of your 8 week program, and was reviewing the slow motion of my 1rm attempts - so this was super timely. Thanks, Zack.

4:40 Dude I have the same issue straightening my arms ... I thought I was the only people living on this planet with that "issue" ! I started weightlifting three months ago, I'm having a blast and I'm glad to see it's possible to succeed in weightlifting with arms remaining slightly bent even if you feel like they're straight as hell. Keep up the good content ! Cheers from Belgium

It's been close to 5months since i actually started c&j and i love it to death since its so different from just typical commercial gym workouts but man it's so difficult. In my mind i know what to do but when its actually time to do it, it's totally different. Stuff just happens so fast you dont have time to correct yourself as you go. I cant afford crossfit gym and the time since i'm on rotating days off with midnight shift so i bought bumper plates and a bar and self teaching through videos. Thanks for the info. As of now body weight 155lbs, c&j PR 180lbs. Hope to look back at this comment in a year and see how much i've grown.

Hi Zack. I Love your content. There was a polish weightlifter, Szymon Kolecki, who had similar problems with his clean. He injured his back at the age of 18 or 19 which obviously stopped his career. He struggled for a good nr of years to fix it and had several operations. Once his back was fixed and he matured he eliminated this problem and his coach was Zygmunt Smaclerz who was fired as a haed caoch after bringing only one medal from the Olympics. He moved to USA and is a coach there. You could try to get in touch with him and ask how he managed Kolecki and improved his clean technique. Alternatively you can ignore all of it.

Hey Zach. If by any chance you manage to see this comment, I only have one question. Since I have a ganglion cyst on my wrist, catching the bar from a clean is really not an option for me as it gets the cyst inflamed instantly, which prevents me from training whatsoever. For that reason, I have only been doing snatches, since they seem to be more forgiving on my wrist. My question is - is it bad to train only one Olympic lift (can it create some sort of imbalance)? Thanks for the great content, you've been a humongous inspiration.

Hey Zack can you do a breakdown of Rostami lifting? He seems so explosive and the bottom position seems so stable, what can you say about that?
@woogie29015 жыл бұрын
Hey Tellie, would you say the same thing with the fixation on maximising triple extension in the snatch? Or could it be more important in the snatch? My coach had me working on trying to extend fully for a while, and I think he got annoyed with my inability to get the timing right when I'm forced to fully extend. My default is to rush through extension, and get under it quick, but nowhere near as technically sound as Meso.

I am a new lifter and my contact is about mid-thigh. I have a positive ape index like you, but not as severe. Should I work a slight bend into my pull to make contact higher? In general, does ones ape index determine if a bend is necessary and to what degree?

My main issue in the clean is that I can recover from the squat, especially when I go too deep. Its feel like I cant recover fast, or that I don't have the strength do it quickly after the little bounce in the bottom. What do you think I can do for train in this?

Emi Hoid most likely the arm bend. Which is why I try to explain both sides and why what I personally do is an effect of my intent (pulling to fixation) and the outcome is a quick arm bend.
@richardarmitage59765 жыл бұрын

why do american lifters, even when getting to the point where they can compete internationally, like Wes Kitts, still look shaky compared to the top ten in their class? Was thinking it's to do with the fact that American kids aren't recruited to lifting programs before puberty, but I don't know.

To be such an apparent expert in all thing weightlifting and critical of so many lifters’ form who have way higher numbers than you is strange. Like the small twirps at the gym who wanna come by and give you advice on how to lift when you literally lift quadruple what they do. This guy critiquing world class lifters “imperfect form” is so odd. Basically only this guy knows how to do it right and his form is the only acceptable technique.
