I think people are confused because even though she was not an influencer, she hung around people who were influencers and has that stereotypical "influencer" look, so I think people who didn't know her that well or how her career started maybe assumed she was one?

I think there's a big distinction between someone like Troye or Conan, who wanted to be singers since they were kids and from the start it was clear that making music was always their goal and passion in life, and they built an online following through seeking the kind of community that, at the time, wasn't available to them in their real life. Compared to someone like the D'Amelios where it feels like after they blew up on TikTok they quickly realized how fleeting and unpredictable that kind of fame is, so they started scrambling for something more stable and legitimate and music seemed like an easy option. Audiences aren't dumb, people can pick up on earnestness.
@nicky.reardon

I think you’re misunderstanding the point I’m trying to make here. I wasn’t evaluating anyone on their talent or abilities. It was specifically geared towards people who had established audiences for creating content, and successfully transferred that to a Music audience. I totally agree with you Troye and Conan had that clear intention from day one, but for the purposes of specifically this video. I was analyzing their music release strategies and marketing

Madison was never meant to be an influencer. She actually started out by being discovered and was actually signed to a label around the age of 14 before she was dropped. She had to start from scratch all over again. I'm very saddened by how misunderstood she is.

part of the reason why madison beer’s discography is all over the place is bc of her record label history. the first one wanted to push her to pop and she was stuck for awhile with them hating it, she had trouble with at least one other one, and has released independently as well. she was always been extremely music-driven tho

madison may hang out with influencers but she’s so far from being one, idk where people got that narrative. if you’re really a fan of hers, you can tell how much of a music lover she is & honestly, she does have an easily identifiable aesthetic / has things that can easily be associated with her. i just don’t think people care to do the research (not you, just generally speaking) ! also she put out an ep in 2018 before her debut album. to me she just feels like she’s misunderstood ! 🤍
@r1ddhim4
@r1ddhim4 26 күн бұрын
she doesnt have an identifiable aesthetic tbh. she mostly stuck to either seductive futuristic/alien themes (which was so cool) or the coquette bows and frilly skirts. she never really stuck to one thing for long enough so you really cant associate her with one recognizable aesthetic, especially now that the latter bows and cute-yet-sexy theme is being DOMINATED by sabrina lol. madison's music is honestly good, i wish she'd stick to the hot siren theme cus it fits so well. and she's gotta stop hanging out with influencers bcs that definitely harms her image as a singer a lot. i definitely get why people see her as an influencer more than an artist
@vaydaotti
@vaydaotti 25 күн бұрын
@@r1ddhim4 i think that perhaps her “aesthetic” is the fact that she’s always consistently incorporated her interests into her art. rick & morty, fight club, truman show, jennifer’s body, the beatles, the turtles (50s/60s in general,) etc. as a fan, i’ve always been able to look at her and know exactly what she’s about. it’s also quite clear from her instagram. since you mentioned sabrina, compare her feed to madison’s.. it honestly feels like you get a better sense of madison’s aesthetic through her insta. silly, but since we’re talking about aesthetics it feels relevant. but ! we can agree to disagree !

As much as I love Addison's rebrand. It's still all over the place. She still has no branding and proper marketing. Like her image in music is confusing because there's nothing in her branding or marketing that makes people remember her. For example, Sabrina and Olivia's marketing. Their teams really work on the psychology part of it. Sabrina has blue, Olivia has purple, Sabrina is this babydoll, Olivia is this rockstar-ish. Or Taylor Swift has this hannah montana career where her fans grow with her. With Addison or even Madison Beer, their music careers are like (???). Like where's the branding? Where's the storytelling? Where's the image? What's the theme?

I know in one interview (unsure if it was a daytime show or whatever medium it was,) regardless, she stated she was sort of the inventor of the selfie…( there is footage of her with her camera, taking photos of herself, in the way we do now before the front camera was invented and mirror selfies was dying off.)

I also think what Shawn lacks that Harry Styles and Justin Bieber does not lack is sex appeal. Shawn Mendes is soooo handsome, but has zero sexual energy. Harry and Justin have that, while Shawn doesn’t. Similarly , I relate it to why JC Chasez didn’t turn into a superstar like Justin Timberlake. he just didn’t have the star power that JT has. Another case (where it turns out it doesn’t matter for her) is Taylor Swift. Very unsexual, but that’s not what her audience wants from her so she doesn’t need it. Love the analysis Nicky!

For the distinction influencer to music versus cinéma, my theory is that according to a lot of my theater friends / actors, their motivation is understanding a charachter and wanting to embrace it. Being an influencer demands I guess this authenticity of being oneself, and music gives that too. Even when you don’t write your own song you want to sing something that resonate with you so you can actually interpret it and give your all. I guess acting people struggles more with giving to the world their authentic self which is why they are so good at getting into the skin of a charachter! Being an ancient youtuber and now artist myself that’s what I went through 😇

Blue Neighbourhood by Troye is one of the best pop albums ever! I still listen to it now and am floored by how great the production is. I think first impressions really do matter. When you look at the biggest artists in music, their earlier music still holds up and was considered great at the time. If from the get go, your music doesn’t hit than people are less likely to pay attention to you as time goes on, even if your music has evolved. First impressions matter!

When you talk about QB at 23:50 or so, I think it boils back to your original thesis/charli quote. People who become famous on YT might have less to do with music on paper, but in reality a pop star is primarily a personality. If their personality AND following can shift over, that’s what makes them a pop star. On the other hand, acting and being an actor isn’t concerned with artistry that SHOULD be distinct because we can see how damaging that is to an actors career longevity (kristen stewart, the rock, elizabeth giles, victoria justice maybe, etc) because you get typecasted. I remember reading in a fiction book that “the best actors have no personality” because it makes them the plastic/malleable canvas for the character they need to portray. For example, logan paul is such a personality that he could never be a serious actor, and so realistically he can only move to a lateral personality/starring field like fighting. That being said, I think this brings us also to the discussion of artistry vs talent ! Music industry values artistry more than talent and it’s the opposite for the acting professions. This is why QB is in the minority in this movement to alternate industries.

Eh, in the 2000s honestly we all thought Paris was a flop (as far as music goes). It wasn't until later after her extensive DJing that she became more iconic as far as her music. It wasn't bad, but the scene was insanely oversaturated with that type of sexygirlpop and you couldn't top Britney no matter what.

I'm kinda seeing this phenomenon at play with the career trajectory of some of the girls from Dream Academy, particularly Adela, how she's been parleying her dancing TikToks to specific, unique pop artist vision.

46:51 this part makes senses but also confuses me on a fundamental level as someone who loves all these artists. i think even with the art i create as a fashion student or with my own life everything is so much more complex and intersectional. and in the era of the trend aren’t we all a little bit of everything? i guess that what differentiates the art and the consumer. consumers are multifaceted and that’s what gives their wallet importance to creatives tapping into their different tastes/identities, and creatives help to push a concept further in a direction that can make it larger than life and really resonate at different points of a consumers mind. it really feed into your point of the artist creating a world that has a pov, because the consumer wants escapism into a narrative that is stable and concentrated and not as diluted as the everyday mundane of life.

48:17 this reminds me of one of my fave artists. I discovered Alexander Stewart on TikTok and his heartbreak pop, especially from usually either a gender-unspecified adolescent and/or young adult perspective or from a man who freely experiences and expresses his emotions, really appealed to me as a niche. He still makes TikToks too but I think they’ve always been mostly focused on his music with a couple funny unrelated ones here and there for a little bit of fun now and then. I also relate it to your earlier point abt male artists, especially straight white men, getting huge followings of straight white women who just admire them for their looks rather than other fans who truly resonate and can empathise (more than sympathise) with their music. He fills a niche that was left unfulfilled for me and so he’s much more than “someone I found off of TikTok”, same as a similar example of the interracial biseggsual (I have to self censor that or else it gets deleted, don’t come for me) Cambridge couple I found off of TikTok that filled the other specific niche of another type of representation. 😊😁🙂

An other influencer who makes music but hasn't made it in the music industry is Niki Demar. Also, this video makes me ask for a video. I feel like there is a video to be made about Selena Gomez ? Her being very successful yet at the same time receiving a lot of hate. The way people view her as an actress vs her as a singer etc Like from Alex Russo, to Spring Breakers, to Rare Beauty to Emilia Perez. Mixed up with all the relationship drama and her physical and mental health issues. Idk if that inspires sth in you ? lol Almost 44k, you can get there ! ☺️

I’m at the Shawn part (he follows me on twitter, I just have to mention it of course). I feel so bad regarding his sexuality because I’m nosy and delusional so I always wanna know but I would never ask or try to make him say it lol. I’ve never got why people do that. I just waited and he dated Camila so I was like ok cool
