If it's not already; a nice feature on cameras would be an un-squeezed/stretched preview mode for anamorphic lenses so that you can see the image as it'll be while you're shooting. Have a quick toggle high up in the UI/UX that allows a "Stretch By.."/"Squeeze By.." with the respective multipliers.

Yeah, I agree! But I think that's computationally very intensive. But I would love to have it! :)

I really liked your comment about just shooting with gear that makes it fun! I know us photographers get really hung up on needing to use the BEST tool for the task, but some people seem to forget that at the end of the day most of us got into photography for the fun of it! When I first got into photography as a 10/11yr old, all I had was my Mom's cheap plastic point and shoot camera and I had a BLAST! Ever since then I find myself trying to recapture that feeling. Like most, I've definitely caught some Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) where I buy gear I'll never actually use because I think that will make photography as fun as it was years ago. But on the flip side, the last couple years I've decided to slim down my gear to only two cameras and I've really enjoyed it more than when I had a ton of cameras and gear! Keep up the great videos Lukasz! 📸🙂

Thanks!! I'm glad you share the same sentiment. I find trying out unusual lenses like this brigs a lot of enjoyment to my shooting these days, but even with a simple 28 or 35 I have an awesome time. It's all about exploring the world and discovering things. :)

Hello Lukasz, great episode as always. It would be awesome if Axel could use a second anamorphic lens to film this episode... The biggest issue for me would be the distortion, but I'm obsessed with straight lines. 😄It distracts me even when I watch (Hollywood) movies and tells me subconscious something about quality of the production. P.s. You are probably aware of the new (Viltrox 28mm f4.5 and Samyang "Remaster Slim") pancake lenses? I thought it could be a good topic for one of your future videos. Both lenses seem to create huge interest at the moment. The Viltrox has (unfortunately) fixed aperture, but I think they have a Nikon version. The Samyang is for Sony only, but maybe you could rent or borrow a A7. I think such videos could attract big viewership at the moment (especially as both lenses are not available everywhere, yet). Have a great weekend! 👍

Yeah, it would have been cool but they only gave us one. Please, there's no way it would work on a gimbal as it's too heavy (for ours at least) and it's a manual focus lens. So, it would have to be a very, very different video with a lot more static shots. I'm not aware of those lense. Honestly, I really don't pay attention to new gear, I just accept stuff we get for free if it's interesting, like this anamorphic lens (I turn away a lot of gear reviews cuz they simply don't interest me). Honestly, I'm kinda tired of gear review videos. We have a few more in the pipe and I can't wait to get through them and just get back to creative shooting on my own terms. :)

My Sirui saturn 35mm anamorphic (the lighter version) has become my main lens for photography so I'm happy to see other photographers dabbling with anamorphic shooting :)
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 ай бұрын
Nice!! Yeah, I was torn between the two. But Sirui told me the Venus version was the pro one so I took it hahah, even though it's heavier. I wonder how it compares optically to the Saturn.
@darkpheonix69008
@darkpheonix69008 3 ай бұрын
@EYExplore I know the saturn was initially aimed at FPV drones, small rigs, and such, but I'm not sure why they call the Venus the "pro" line. The optical formula is virtually the same. The Saturn does have better focus breathing and constant squeeze factor along all the focus range.

great review. Cropping a 24 mm lens top and bottom you will end up with a different image. You will cut off a lot of your composition. or am i confused now?
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 28 күн бұрын
You would end up with a similar composition but a different DOF, field curvature, lens flare, distortion, and bokeh. Basically, it would all look different but the framing would be more or less the same.

Enjoyable and instructive vid, Lukaz. Appreciate the PS demo of “unsquish” (new technical term😊). Can the correction be done in Lightroom? Other YT posts about this kind of lens tend to skip over editing stuff. When checking live view is the image compressed? Good subname for the vid, IMO, “Forced Creativity”😊. BTW, I understand there’s at least one anamorphic add on lens available for the iPhone. Cheers!
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 3 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I don't think the correction can be done in Lightroom. I don't use LR but use the similar Adobe Camera Raw and couldn't find a way to do it. I wish it was possible! Yes, in the viewfinder the image is squished. You get used to it though. :)

I thought about it, but didn't see any subjects that warranted it on this shoot. You end up with a very narrow and tall image too, though I guess that's not so bad for phone screens. Anyway, it would be cool for some subjects!

What aspect ratio are you shooting in on your Z9? How do you compose, just eyeballing it?
@EYExplore
@EYExplore Ай бұрын
The Z9 is just set in 3:2 like normal. Everything in the viewfinder is squished to fit. I compose the same way I always compose. For example if you frame up a line that goes corner to corner diagonally through the frame, when you stretch out the image to account for the anamorphic lens, then the line will still be going corner to corner. The relationship between objects does not change in the frame, only their shape.

Using an anamorphic lens, you're using the full resolution of your sensor. Using a wider lens and cropping top and bottom, you're losing some of that resolution. I have a Moment anamorphic lens for my iPhone and I love using that for photos.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 26 күн бұрын
This is true! Thought at 45mp on my camera, I'm okay with losing some resolution for the sake of storage. Actually, when I converted the anamorphic images to the correct aspect ration, I actually squished them down on the vertical axis instead of stretching on the horizontal axis. Stretching them would have increased the 45mp to 70mp or so. Ouch! :)
