This video is built around a talk given in the Vivekavana Buddhist Society, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia on January 6th 2013.
The talk is illustrated with infographics describing the planes of existence and with photographs and complimentary text.
The talk describes the various ways the universe comes to destruction, and how it re-evolves.
It also talks about the moral devolution of humans, before a reversal happens which eventually leads to the emergence of Metteyya (Maitreya) Buddha.
The talk is mainly based on two discourses in the Dīghanikāya, Aggaññasutta (DN 27) and Cakkavattisīhanādasutta (DN 26).
An extension of the Geography of Buddhism series, this video looks at the sacred geography of Buddhism.
The first video in this series on The Planes of Existence is here: • Bhante Anandajoti: The...

Thanks for the very enlightening talk on Aggaññasutta. Now I can see how well the Buddha connects our psychological and physical cosmological worlds to the foundation of ethics/morality and to how refined our constitutive mental state.

I think myself that the growing body of Jataka stories were the main thrust behind the rise of the Bodhisattva ideal; but surely the two visions were melded in the Middle Ages when it was customary to look on Buddhist Kings as Bodhisattvas also.

Just a though, but could the Universal Monarch have possibly been the original inspiration for the Mahayana Bodhisattva ideal...just a thought ?

Thank you Bhante for this lucid explanation. Humans are really stardust, see article at Space.com . Both body and mind gets trapped by sensual craving, physical survival and pleasure/lust/accumulative instincts...urge to privatize all things.

bow for your sermon. may i know, will the world destroy after the Goutom Buddhas shasana?
@DharmaRecords
@DharmaRecords 8 жыл бұрын
+Kalpo Toru No, the world is not destroyed at that point, but some time after Gautama Vuddha's Sāsana, another Sāsana will arise under Lord Maitreya.

+Kalpo Toru An antarakappa signifies a time when the Buddhasāsana is no longer present, but that is not now, as we still have access to the Lord Buddha's teachings.

could i know which kappa we are in- ayu,antara,asongkhyey,maha kappa? you means we are not in antara kappa ?i beg your pardon vante... i have confusion.that's why i disturb you. regards ...

+Kalpo Toru Yes, there is some confusion in the question: āyukappa refers to a person's lifespan, antarakappa refers to a time when no buddhasāsana is available; asankheyyakappa is a period of uncountable time; mahākappa is a particularly long period of time. We are currently in the bhaddakappa, in which five Buddhas will appear, four have come (Gautama was the fourth), and Maitreya will follow.
