Ben Carson is a Christian and an accomplished Neurosurgeon. He became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in 1984 at age 33; he was the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the United States. At retirement, he was professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Carson's achievements include participating in the first reported separation of conjoined twins joined at the back of the head. Although surgically a success, the twins continued to suffer neurological/medical complications. Additional accomplishments include performing the first successful neurosurgical procedure on a fetus inside the womb; performing the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins; developing new methods to treat brain-stem tumors; and revitalizing hemispherectomy techniques for controlling seizures. He wrote over 100 neurosurgical publications. He retired from medicine in 2013. He sees no conflict between his Christian faith and modern science.

A wonderful explanation. Sadu sadu sadu. Buddhism teach about Quantum Physics too. The origin of the smallest unit of matter, called a “suddhāṭṭhaka.” (sometimes written as suddhāshtaka). These eight never arise in isolation and thus are called “avinibbhoga rupa.” They always rise together; all eight are there in any suddhāṭṭhaka. The relative “amounts” of each component can vary, and thus some suddhāṭṭhaka can be dominated by one element, for example. Even then, all eight are present to some extent. We can try to use a new type of mathematics to discover the truth. I guess the mind is based on the first 4 elementary particles in the Universe called 'Maha Bhūta Gati (Gati Bhūta)' ('Character of matter ghosts/particles') which cause to form another 4 matter elementary particles in the Universe called 'Mahā Bhūta'. And our mind doesn't have a start, because the Universe started to form from the first 4 elementary particles ('Gati Bhūta') which was the first cause to form the mind with the help of other elementary particles. The first relationship of the mind is with the immaterial particles ('Gati Bhūta'), and that immaterial particles caused to make the matter particles ('Mahā Bhūta'), so it sounds like the mind ('Gati Bhūta') made the matter. And mathematically I think the matter particles are under or outside the first 4 elementary particles like this: immaterial particles (matter particles) OR matter particles (immaterial particles). I guess the particles which are inside the bracket caused to form the particles which are outside the bracket. Eg: According to this mathematical formula: (a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2 Matter + Antimatter = (+0-0)^6 + (-0+0)^6 (+0-0)^6 = (+1-(-1))^3 x (+0.0-0.0)^3 (+1-(-1))^3 = (+1)3 - ((+1)3 x (-1) - ((-1)2 x (+1)2)) + (-1)2 x (+1) - ((+1)2 x (-1) - ((+1)2 x (-1)2 - ((-1)3 x (+1))) + (-1)3) There are two sets: Outside set: (+1)3 - ((+1)3 x (-1) - ((-1)2 x (+1)2)) + (-1)2 x (+1) Inside set: - ((+1)2 x (-1) - ((+1)2 x (-1)2 - ((-1)3 x (+1))) + (-1)3) I guess, only the life in Brahma worlds and the life in Heavenly worlds could exist if the Universe were not able to form the life on earth (Human world). According to Buddhism our mind use 4 elementary ghosts (active invisible particles) called Character ('gati') ghosts (Character of 4 matter particles) to make matter too, and according to Buddhism almost all the matter particles (mahā bhūta) in the universe came from an interaction of 'Gati Bhūta' ('Character of matter ghosts'/ 'immaterial particles') and the mind which works together. That is where mental energy (immaterial) is converted to matter at the very fundamental stage. So, maybe the Brahma life could form easier than other life forms from a small group of the elementary particles. According to Quantum Physics almost all the elemantary particles don't have a single Quantum state until we interact with it to measure it, so the elementary particles are a representation of many dimensions at once, and I think it is not a wave, but it interacts like a wave too. The universe is based on dimensional interactions, and the dimensions don't have a position and a speed because of the singularity of the universe. So the physical meaning of the elemantary particles is a representation of the singularity of the early universe too. We can use the duality of the 6 directions of the universe to find the dimensions of the Universe. We can't use Kilogram, Litre, Time, Distance to explain Quantum Physics, Most units are not fundamental, and quantum physics should be based on ratios, dimensions, virtual shapes etc. There is a difference between the Quantum Reality and the Physical Reality. Just because scientists couldn`t discover something from their technology that doesn`t make that thing not scientific. If you want to explain Quantum Physics, then you have to use the Mathematics of the Universe. I already have enough mathematical explanations to understand quantum physics. If you can't understand the real mathematics of the Universe, then you can't understand science too. Maybe there are a lot of people who can't understand the foundations of mathematics. But without mathematics you can't talk about science. Accrding to Buddhism, one’s character (gati) determines one’s future births. The origin of the smallest unit of matter, called a “suddhāṭṭhaka.” Four of these are the “satara mahā bhūta“ (The Four Great Bhūta. Bhūta is another name for “ghost” because of their elusive nature.): The four mahā bhūta ('Matter') are with four basic “gati”. It says, “gati (character) attracts a similar gati”. Thus “gati” leads to “bhūta,” the first phase of rupa that can be seen (only by Buddha). That is the suddhāṭṭhaka stage. That is where mental energy (immaterial) is converted to matter at the very fundamental stage. According to Buddhism there were 70 aeons (70 big bangs) when there were no Buddhas. and again there were around 30 aeons (30 big bangs) when there were no Buddhas. Usually a Buddha appear when there are living beings, but we can understand that there are written evidence in Buddhism where clearly stated that there were previous Universes where Buddhas didn't appear. So that sounds like Buddhism talking about probability (maybe natural fine-tuning) too. And it is scientifical. The Buddha said that there were aeons more than the sands in the Ganges river (in india). - Suresh A Big Bang is a start of an Aeon (Kalpa: A great kalpa is 4 medium kalpas). Existence of the Aeons (Kalpa) in Buddhism shows a start and an end of the Universe again and again. "A world that is a thousand times a thousandfold minor world system is called a thousand-to-the-second-power middling world system. 514 (3) A world that is a thousand times a thousand-to-the-second-power middling world system is called a thousand-to-the-third-power great world system. Ananda, the Tathagata can convey his voice as far as he wants in a thousand-to-the-third-power great world system." - The Tathagata (The Buddha) (Anguttara Nikaya The Numerical Discourse 277 |Page:314) If the first 1000 world systems (small universe) = A Galaxy, then the thousand-to-the-second-power middling world system (1000x1000) = Maybe the 'Dark Matter' combine groups of galaxies making a thousand-to-the-second-power middling world system (middle universe), And then a 1000 middling world systems (1000x1000x1000) = thousand-to-the-third-power great world system (the triple thousand-great universe) When enormous numbers of these suddhāṭṭhaka fuse, they get to a more condensed state of “mahā bhūta.” The subtle bodies of Brahmā and some gandhabbā are made of mahā bhūta. Only when vast amounts of these mahā bhūta fuse together to become even more condensed, that we can see them. At this highly condensed state, the matter is called “dhātu.” Bodies of devas are made of finer dhātu. That is why we cannot see devas, but Brahmā can see them. Thus our bodies are made of more dense dhātu that we can see. That is why solid objects are called “Pathavi dhātu“; suddhāṭṭhaka in such solid objects have predominantly Pathavi. According to the Buddhism there are 16 hells (16 Hells = 8 Cold Hells + 8 Hot Hells). Above the hell levels there are 10 levels. 4 levels for Animals , Ghosts, Asura, Humans. And there are 5 levels (good heavens), and the last level (6th heaven is a highly enjoying Kaama/Mara heaven) (Dark Matter sounds like heavens). But the next 20 levels (20 brahma levels) are almost neutral (without genders). The first 10 brahma levels enjoy bliss (with body) but the next 10 brahma levels are neutral (with mind). Maybe the 'Hawking Points in the Cosmic Microwave Background' shows the existence of black holes of the previous aeon. Time was irrelevent even after the big bang because of the high energy in the Universe both during and after the big bang. According to Quantum physics Mass makes the time, and the Higgs field can't give Mass to elementary particle even after the big bang until the Universe start to cool down, and it shows that the Mass is not a part of the calculation of the big bang, and the mass should be a sub dimension. I think the Big bang is a part of the cyclic process of the Universe which has a connection with the edge of the Universe. And maybe the big bang is an illusion of the Universe which makes the Universe look very small from the destruction process by removing the Mass from the particle before the next big bang. So if that is just a temporary separation of some groups of particles (earth/sun), then maybe it has a potential to rearrange some major groups of particles with nearly the same materials again. However, we can't find a good balance in the cosmic background, so it shows the existence of a previous Universe, and every big bang can change the size of the Universe. Maybe we will be able to find the process of the big bang mathematically. - W.S. Madusanka

At the 40 minute mark, it is very strange to hear the lady. She completely misses the point. The Ajahn is not talking about Global Warming which btw doesn’t lead to the Sun getting hotter. Rather, he is talking about the Sun becoming a red giant after millions of years ending up engulfing the earth. It is strange when she disagrees although this is well established science through our actual observation of other stars

To the first question asked after the talk, it was a bit of a misunderstanding, the ozone layer protects us from solar radiation (UV and Xrays and the like), and anthropogenic climate change is what she was really talking about. Buddha was talking about the very long term inflation and heating of the sun (and turning into a red giant eventually), many millions to billions of years in the future.

The Ten Worlds is a classification of ten distinct states of life, and forms the foundation for the Buddhist view of life. Through examining the Ten Worlds, we can come to understand the nature of our own state of life and gain insights into how we can transform it. The Ten Worlds are: (1) the world of hell, (2) the world of hungry spirits, (3) the world of animals, (4) the world of asuras, (5) the world of human beings, (6) the world of heavenly beings, (7) the world of voice-hearers, (8) the world of cause-awakened ones, (9) the world of bodhisattvas, and (10) the world of Buddhas. The first six worlds --- those of hell, hungry spirits, animals, asuras, human beings, and heavenly beings --- are known as the six paths. The remaining four --- those of voice-hearers, cause-awakened ones, bodhisattvas, and Buddhas --- are known as the four noble worlds. According to the ancient Indian world view, the six paths refer to the six realms of existence among which life transmigrates in the unending cycle of birth and death. Buddhism adopted this concept. The four noble worlds are life-states that are attained through Buddhist practice. In Buddhist sutras other than the Lotus Sutra, the Ten Worlds are regarded as ten separate, fixed realms of existence. The Lotus Sutra, however, fundamentally rejects that point of view, teaching that the Ten Worlds are ten states of life inherent within each living being. It reveals that living beings of the nine worlds from hell to the world of bodhisattvas possess within them the world of Buddhas, and that Buddhas also possess all the other nine worlds. Therefore, a being presently manifesting one of the Ten Worlds in fact possesses within itself all of the Ten Worlds and can subsequently manifest any other of the Ten Worlds in response to external influences. This teaching that all of the Ten Worlds are inherent within one another is called the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds. Nichiren Daishonin writes: "Neither the pure land nor hell exists outside oneself; both lie only within one's own heart. Awakened to this, one is called a Buddha; deluded about it, one is called an ordinary person." (Writings of Nichiren Daishonin-I, pg 456) A single life possesses all the Ten Worlds. This means that, even if right now we may be experiencing the painful life-state of hell, we can transform it into the supremely joyous life-state of Buddhahood. The principle of the Ten Worlds based on the Lotus Sutra opens the way for such dynamic inner transformation. Let us now examine the nature of each of the Ten Worlds. First of all, with regard to the lowest six worlds, or the six paths, the Daishonin writes in "The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind": When we look from time to time at a person's face, we find him or her sometimes joyful, sometimes enraged, and sometimes calm. At times greed appears in the person's face, at times foolishness, and at times perversity. Rage is the world of hell, greed is that of hungry spirits, foolishness is that of animals, perversity is that of asuras, joy is that of heaven, and calmness is that of human beings. But some people are like that concentrating on saving the themselves, which is perfectly fine. The debates goes on, different people inherited different karma or “seeds”, and are drawn to different styles of teachings.

My Question is: Why did Buddha teach that the earth was flat when he was fully enlightened, It was known that the Buddha saw the entire universe with his third eye, and even astoundingly the Buddha was capable to travel to the Tavathisma ( Thauthisa develova) , Deva realm and taught the Abidhamma continuously for three months to an audiences of Devas including his passed away mother (Maha Maya). While Buddha was so capable to see and travel through the entire universe, how come Buddha did not know that the earth was round and the earth was revolving around the sun, but not the other way around ? Why did Buddha teach after his enlightenment, that the earth was flat? Why didn't he know that the earth was round or elliptical or even more precise shape?

+samuel samarasinghe WHAT BUDDHA SAID ABOUT THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH ? FRI, NOV 2, 2012 AT 8:04 PM BY: KERTA Once upon the time, one of Buddha disciples (bhikkhu) asked the Blessed One about Kappa or Kalpa (an aeon). Kappa or Kalpa is a period of a duration of the world. The Buddha answered : "A Kappa is long, bhikkhu, the Blessed One said. It is more than several hundred thousand years. Suppose, bhikkhu, there was a great stone mountain with one yojana long, one yojana wide, and one yojana high, without holes or crevices, one solid mass of rock. At the end of every hundred years a man would stroke it once with a piece of Kasian (very soft) cloth. That great stone mountain might by this effort be worn away and eliminated but a Kappa would still have not come to an end. So long is a Kappa, bhikkhu.” (Samyutta Nikaya 15.5) Describing the duration of the world, the Buddha used a symbolical description that happened very close to a scientific discovery related to the shape of the world. He depict a great stone mountain, one solid mass of rock, by using the form of a sphere, which is a very similar in shape with the globe that we know today. A sphere (from Greek ?????? - sphaira, ball ) is a perfectly round geometrical object in three-dimensional space, such as the shape of a round ball. Like a circle, which is in two dimensions, a sphere is the set of points which are all the same distance “r” from a given point in space. This distance “r” is known as the "radius" of the sphere, and the given point is known as the center of the sphere. The maximum straight distance through the sphere is known as the "diameter". It passes through the center and is thus twice the radius. In mathematics, a careful distinction is made between the sphere (a two-dimensional surface embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space) and the ball (the interior of the three-dimensional sphere). For the explanation that given to us more than 2.500 years ago, before the rising of science and modern technology, this is quite extraordinary.

+samuel samarasinghe Mr samuel use your common sense. Most of the buddhist cosmology came from the hindu cosmology because after the death of buddha around 3 to 4 hundred years later many brahnims who turned into buddhism have written the buddhist suttas and they were liar in name of buddha such as buddha said this and that but Big no that is full of lie. Buddha is buddha ultimate truth and never comment such silly cosmology not only flat earth also the sumeru or mount meru which is considered the center of univers. For example, a renowned Indian scholar named Vasubhandhu (ca. 4th or 5th century CE) provided an elaborate description of the Meru-centered cosmos in the Abhidharmakosa. That is bullshit because he never saw the original buddha and it was not buddha's idea.

This is what the Buddhist cosmology according to the ancient Buddhist scriptures. .....Buddha. teach about an under world, the earth, the mid region of Devas inhabiting world of passions and desires, the higher region of Devas inhabiting the world of forms and perception and the highest region of abstract world known as Brahma lokas inhabiting great beings. Buddha teachs the earth as the centre of the univers, resting on the Mount Meru surrounded by seven con centric rings of mountains and seven oceance, with the hells of asuras below and the worlds of devas above. In theory Buddha new nothing beyond Jambudvipa (India) To Buddha earth was a flat disc resting on the mount meru.

Very fluid talk, and it is nice to see we can discuss the implications of 1 billion inhabited worlds, about time the human race grew a pair, and moved out from the European binary model. No, we aren't alone and we are not the most advanced, and the Earth will disintegrate! Just, make sure you have enlightenment by then. :.)

Jonathan , European binary model??? What do you mean? Binary, as in we live in a binary star system? If that's what you mean, that is definitely not the "European model" whatever that means.

The model taught by Europeans...in the main, (not Eastern or Native philosophy) but I have since learnt (yes in one month) that maybe we do live in a Binary star system and that Sirius maybe the twin (pair) of our Sun.

He is right about big crunch it's mentioned in Qur'an chapter 21 verse 104 The) Day We will fold the heaven like (the) folding (of) a scroll for records. As We began (the) first creation We will repeat it, a promise upon Us. Indeed, We - We are (the) Doers. so from this we can conclude that it will be a big crunch gravity will be a dominant force in the end of universe.

Saqy G Buddhist believe in 26 levels of heavens( google 31 levels of existence) . Big bang and big crunch happen till 7the level of heaven. Higher heavens don't experience periodic desolution and creation. So the being who takes first in 7th heaven after big bang can see other beings taking birth after him. Seeing this, he concludes that he is the creator and other beings who follow him begin to worship him as creator. This is described in brahmanimantanika sutta. thedailyenlightenment.com/2012/03/the-buddhas-victory-over-a-god-demon/

+Buzel Bazel Mr samuel use your common sense. That is bullshit because he never saw the original buddha and it was not buddha's idea.

sthung raja ....there might be some influence sure, but the buddha said that his teachings would last 500 years before becoming more and more corrupted. So within this time range there was King Ashoka who became a devoted buddhist as well as at least some of his kids, who actually became arahants and spreaded the teachings to Sri Lanka for instance. (according to my memory) And Ashoka set up stone pillars all over India of today, with the teachings of buddha within this predicted time range of 500 years. When these pillars were duged out, teachings were recognised from the Nikayas we know today (at least partly, i am not sure how much they found) The Abhidhamma, Visuddhi Maggha are anyway not regarded as "original" in that sense.

Siddhartha Gouthama is neither a mathematician nor a astronomer similar to that of great Greek mathematicians and astronomers like Anacimanda, Theal, Pythagoras, Aristarchus, Aristotle of roughly of his day. It is wrong to interpret 2500 years old fable and mythological statements uttered by a Hindu prince like Siddhartha Gouthama to explain quantum mechanics of 21st century. It is wrong in my humble view to "sell" Buddhism to a skeptical public by playing up its apparent agreement with modern day science, as I have seen some Buddhist monks are trying to do

Reincarnation and deva realms are modern and rational? You take quite a bit of things by faith. Have you seen the higher realms of the devalokas? Have you seen the Brahma loka? When was the last time you had a conversation with Brahma or Indra? Have you actually seen beings in the avici hells? Have you seen ten, or fifty or hundreds of your past lives, or are you taking all of this on faith? By past lives I don't mean some minor "deja vu" experience that thousands of people, Buddhist and non Buddhist have had. Have you seen somebody die and watched them go into some kind of Bardo experience and seen where they were reborn? Have you seen any of the life in other worlds as described in the Avatamsaka sutra, or in the Vimalakirti sutra? Have you personally witnessed any of the fantastic miracles and supra-mundane events described in some of these sutras? Of course not. Reincarnation is no more scientific than any of the miracles recorded in the Bible that skeptics scoff at, your cosmology has nothing to do with science, but everything to do with old Buddhist fairy tales. By the way, I am not a materialist, I do believe in the Biblical miracles, but really, your religion is based no more on reason than it is on faith than Christianity, which by the way, has plenty of historical and scientific evidence to back it up. Galileo was a staunch Christian during his entire life, as were Kepler, Newton (an unorthodox Christian to be sure, yet one who believed in Biblical prophecy and who wrote more about theology than he did about science) and Copernicus. Thus even your own Buddhist beliefs about reincarnation and deva realms, according to the words of Buddha himself in the Kalama sutra, fail his test of "if you don't see it don't believe it".

I agree when you say that kalama sutta says don't believe ,find it out for yourself.but Buddha teaching is meant to describe our existence and where suffering comes from.you say if you can't see anything dont believe, but something's can't be seen.it can only be experienced. Like emotions of anger is real, can science see anger,? Our vision is only a very small spectrum on the scale of light.don't depend on your eyes for truth, its not the whole picture, just a portion.devas or other beings described by the Buddha is for reference for those who is interested in these subjects .whether it is true or not,we can't confirm it until we experienced it.but we can't discount it either for it hasn't been disproved.now quantum mechanics propose many parallel universe theory and it is science not mumbo jumbo.

hahaha A beliver in God coming out of a virgin doesn't have the right to talk about a logical and rational religion like Buddhism which talks about existence of infinite world systems, galaxies, big bangs, big crunches. It is funny how a believer of 6 thousand years old Earth, created by an angry and jealous god who himself came out of a virgin pussy which he himself created, has the audacity to mock Buddhism.

Here is a list of some scientists who are Christian: Many historians (of many different religious persuasions-including atheistic) have shown that modern science started to flourish only in largely Christian Europe (see The biblical roots of modern science)creation.com/biblical-roots-of-modern-science. These historians point out that the basis of modern science depends on the assumption that the universe was made by a rational creator (see Why does science work at all?)creation.com/science-biblical-presuppositions. An orderly universe makes perfect sense only if it were made by an orderly Creator. But if there is no creator, or if Zeus and his gang were in charge, why should there be any order at all? So, not only is a strong Christian belief not an obstacle to science, such a belief was its very foundation. (See also a refutation of the argument Newton was a creationist only because there was no alternative?) Scientists alive today* who accept the biblical account of creation Note: Individuals on this list must possess a doctorate in a science-related field.
