Arabic is my second language, French is my first and English my third. I have no problem understanding you. But I do think it's a culture/pride issue that shouldn't be underestimated or belittled. Allow me to speak my Arab tongue before they occupy my language as well, Allow me to speak my mother tongue before they colonize her memory as well." Rafeef Ziadah, Palestinian poet.

I am from India. I am fluent in English and Hindi is my mother tongue. I now live in Canada and ever since I was a child back in India I was driven towards Arabic music and their history. I listen to a ton of Khaleeji artists and I feel proud to be able to appreciate artists like Fairouz and Ziad Rahbani. I only understand words in Arabic but I can't speak so it's great that English is used as a common language. People like Anas and you guys bring so much inside information to an outsider like myself who has limited resources to learn about the culture. I consider myself a life-long scholar of the History, culture, music and other arts of the middle east including the politics of the region. The French influence on Lebanese Arabic culture fascinates me just as much the Tribal roots of the Khaleeji Arabic culture. Their music their food are poles apart and yet similar blows my mind.

34:37 I disagree with what has been said about language criticism.. To me, I really feel sad that Arabs start speaking English together when they all Arabs and their mother tongue is Arabic. It almost makes me feel that the society thinks they're cool if they don't speak Arabic - this does not apply to every case, as Anas said some words cannot be translated. I live in Toronto, I speak English and French. In fact, I'm typing in English right now because the whole episode is in English. So the argument in that second does not align with everyone's perception. I believe in freedom, I never bully someone if they don't speak their language, this is just a personal thought that I tend to keep it for myself in many occasions. Nice episode overall 🙂

@@sardeafterdinner Who said wealthy people don't do revolutions? Washington, Lafayette, Danton and Guevara were wealthy or relatively wealthy people. Wealthy people don't just do revolutions, they lead them. I think that's what Davies' J-curve tries to explain. However, I was trying to point out that some point of views are flawed or biased. For example, while I agree that you should try this and that to find yourself, however some people cannot afford the price (time) of a failure. Anw, I usually enjoy your Sarde. It's not because people do not understand your English. It clearly indicates an issue with being connected to your culture. Language is one of the primary characteristics of any culture.

Regarding what Anas said around the one hour mark: Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A prostitute had once been forgiven. She passed by a dog panting near a well. Thirst had nearly killed him, so she took off her sock, tied it to her veil, and drew up some water. Allah forgave her for that.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3143, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2245 Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim Ibn al-Qayyim said, “If Allah Almighty had forgiven one who gave water to a dog suffering from extreme thirst, then how about one who relieves the thirst, satisfies the hunger, and clothes the naked among the Muslims?”
