I think it must have been a shock for many who saw this film as kids to eventually learn the truth of what happened to them. And also to learn that Rasputin was killed over a year-and-a-half before them by other members of the family. The gruesome thing is that her and her sisters' deaths were more brutal than their parents' and brother's: they were killed instantly, but the girls had sewn jewellery into their corsets, which were like an armour against the first round of bullets. The assassins then viciously stabbed them several times with bayonets, then to make sure that they were dead, they shot them in the head.

What really makes this movie stand out is how it defies cliches while still feeling like it's following the 90s Disney formula. Anastasia gets what she has wanted for several years and yet, in that moment, discovers that isn't entirely what she wanted. And at the same time, it's tragic that her memory loss prevented her from truly knowing what it was like to have a family or grow up in one.

The real Empress Marie Feodorovna actually was very beautiful, although she didn't look anything like this - she was very tall and curvy, with large brown eyes and long brown curly hair. She was also noted for being quite the fashionista and was feted by Parisian designers as one of the most stylish women in Europe. However, in real life she was never reunited with any of her family, not did she ever search for them - she accepted from the start that they were all dead. Nor did she flee to Paris - she actually fled first to London, then to her native Copenhagen.

As a child I always believed that Anastasia did survive the revolution and that’s why this movie was made. It was around 2008 when I ran across an article that stated dna conclusively identified a body that was found as being Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia.

How I like this cartoon, watched many times when I was 13 years old. Yes, when I was 13 years old, I wasn't little kid, but I miss that time anyway, that was my childhood. This cartoon is amazing, these songs and characters are nice! Unfortunately real princess Anastasia's fate and her family is sad😥.

The ball gowns are wonderful and they got the detail if the Order of St. Andrew (that blue ribbon) right, and the empress was awarded that order, but historically Anastasia was not awarded the order of St. Andrew

It never occurred to me why Ana cannot be with Dimitri and be an empress of all Russia at the same time. I guess since she is royal and he is not. That would the most obvious answer. 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean they both want to be together but Ana also wants to be with her grandmother, the life she missed. I do not think they explain that in the movie unless I missed that. 😮

it's because of the themes! Yes, their titles are a major obstacle, but you're right they could have made it work. But the dowager says it herself "you were born into this world of glittering jewels and fine titles, but I wonder if it's what you really want." What Anya thought she wanted was to return to her family and old life, but it wasn't what she really wanted or needed. She was obsessed with the past. She pinned her entire sense of self and finding out where she came from. And she did that! "But is it enough?" She has to make a future. She needs to figure out who she is on her own terms, and that's what Dimitri represents, a future. She doesn't leave her grandmother forever in the epilogue she says she'll visit soon. She's leaving the life of Grand Duchess Anastasia to make one of her own. I hope that makes sense haha. I swear I'll make a video essay about this someday

Russian Grand Duchesses were also ranked very highly among European princesses. Alfred, son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, married a Grand Duchess and she was expected to be treated better than her sisters in law (who were princesses and technically ranked below her) were.
