What to expect when you are working in Sweden as an employee?
If you are interested in working in Sweden/Stockholm, I'll talk about general working culture in international companies, how common is it to talk about money and compensation and how to ask for a raise.
What kinds of benefits you get when you work here, what are the vacations, parental leave, and all about free food and fika you can get!
I'll discuss what salary ranges data scientist usually receive in Sweden/Stockholm, what are the differences for seniority levels.

Yeah, the biggest surprise for me was the “Swedish Summer”! I started my first job here in Sweden this past April. A month later (in May), they asked me to block off my vacation days on our group calendar. I initially put in for 2 weeks (actually thinking that was pretty ballsy, given that I’d been working there only a month), but then my boss came back to me all confused, wanting to know why I put in for “only” 2 weeks. She then explained that I actually had to take 4 weeks! I have to say, that was a surprise. I can now also say that it was one of the best, most relaxing vacations I’ve ever had-and fully paid!

I actuallyprefer choosing my vacation dates by myself rather than having to ask for an ‚exception‘ in case I wanna take my vacation at a different time period.

@@tybaltmercutio I'm not sure what you're referring to, as they simply asked me to block time off on the group calendar. They didn't specify which days I needed to block off. Most people in Sweden get between 25 and 30 days of vacation here, and you can choose any dates you like. It just works out that in Sweden most people take their vacation in July and August. So by taking at least some of their vacation during that time, people benefit from the knowledge that pretty much everyone else will be on vacation at that time as well, which I can tell you makes for a WAY more relaxing vacation. In the US, it was very typical to be on vacation (i.e. one that was previously planned and also approved by management) and still have people emailing you, calling or texting you--obviously completely oblivious to the fact that you were on vacation. In fact, during our last year living in the US, my wife's brother got married, and my wife actually pleaded with me to quit my job so that I wouldn't be so disctracted during my vacation. All I can say is, the 4 weeks of vacation I took here last summer were hands down the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations I've ever had. Until you experience the Swedish way of doing it yourself, you obviously have no idea.😄

When we talk about salary it's important how many hours in a month you work. Because someone can say his/her big salary and everybody like: "Wow, cool, you're so successful!" But maybe this person works 6 days in week, 12 hours a day😀

Good and informative, but I think you forgot to mention that about 90% of Swedish employees have some form of pension plan that the employer pays as a benefit.

Agree, pensions are a big thing and important to add as a benefit. In many other countries it is something you need to negotiate but in Sweden most employees have it included in the compensation package. Also from the employer side it is a big thing, as attractiveness but also a huge cost that impacts budgets and profits

one extra comment, in Sweden, your salary is also based on what highest degree you had. For example, for same position, there is different salary offered by company between Phd employee and Master degree one

No that’s not correct. There might be a difference but not based on the degree but most likely based on what you can do or your actual knowledge. In Sweden we have a meritocracy mindset, not title based (trust me, I have a PhD degree myself).

Hi! I think the most popular job-hunting website in Sweden is LinkedIn. The recruiters are quite active there when it comes to tech jobs. There are many places with English as the main company language, but they tend to be either tech companies or Swedish branches of international companies. Most likely, knowing Swedish would be expected for some customer-facing jobs, where you would have to communicate with people in their local language.

I work in the area of security information and i dont have a bachelor's degree in tech (i do have certifications that validate my knowledge in the field) the question is: Do i have a chance of getting hire in Sweden without a degree? Like I said I have experience and certifications.

Yes, you have a chance! It's not mandatory to have a degree to work in Sweden.

Most of the people don't have the salary high enough to get this relief. And you have to commit to living in Sweden temporarily, no more than 5 years. Therefore, it's very rare, I believe.

on average it's 40 hours per week, right now most IT companies do home office, but in "regular times" it's less common. You could negotiate some amount of wfh with your boss though! :)

Just a swede don't work in IT but it's a blooming business tons of studios and developers in sweden especially Stockholm and its a well paid job with good benefits. Should definitely be able to bargain a good contract, you should look online and apply from abroad at first!

How much do data engineers get paid?

Compared with German salaries and system (health care, education, vacation, etc), Swedish salaries are a joke. I agree that you can hardly compare them to Bay Area jobs due to the massive difference in work culture etc, but for example in Germany the benefits are literally the same (30 days vacation, general healthcare, free education) and the salaries easily reach 100k € for professionals with needed skills and in the right industry. But it's mostly the tax which is considerably lower, especially for married couples. If you earn ~110k in Germany that is roughly 6k net per month and that is a normal salary for an engineer or SW dev at a big company in southern Germany. To reach this number in Sweden (ignoring the fact that cost of living is higher there), you would need a monthly wage of 90.000 SKR which is extremely high and impossible to reach with a technical role. I can understand the American PoV that you "get something back" for your taxes but from a German perspective it's really nothing you gain, you just pay more taxes.

@@anonymous1177 I'm not saying it's impossible, but compared to Sweden where there are quite a lot of English speaking corporate environments, these don't really exist to the same degree in Germany. I am a computer science graduate, working in data engineering and when I look for jobs in Germany I would say 98% are listed in German or if written in English specifically state that German language is required. What that means to me is that German companies seem to operate only within the DACH environment.

Some employers have that as a benefit, so they pay that. You can also do that yourself

@@AnastasiaKVL You got it ”half right”. In your income tax i Sweden a certain percentage of the tax is invested towards your future pension. That’s a tax companies have to pay. When you retire that money is paid out as your basic pension. Then most compinies, private or public pay an additional premium towards your top pension. That’s a deal once negotiated between the labour unions and the employers cental organization. So without having to pay any of your net income in premiums you will always get a pension. But you are right; you can always negotiate for you employer to pay towards a privat, individual and additional pension scheme.

3500 euros in avg for a senior "data scientist" in a country like Sweden is not exciting to say the least. The cost of living when compared to south European countries is so much more expensive which means those 3500 euros may be equivalent to 2000 euros in Spain, just to give an example but any other country would work as well. If you come from a third world country, Sweden may be like paradise but as an European citizen, it's just not worth it. PS. And I didn't say anything about the weather there.

The only way to actually increase your salary is to switch jobs. Which is kinda sad. It doesn't really make a difference how good you are at your job, its like 1-2% difference between a complete useless worker to a high performing worker.

13:18 I like your videos, but trust me on this, your last advice of leveraging another offer to negotiate a raise in your current role is NOT GOOD. Even if your employer agrees to match the offer, you'll be walking around with a target on your back, as you've burnt that bridge of trust with your bosses. So, if you've decided to take the offer, then say goodbye regardless of whether they want you to stay. Don't stay to negotiate.
