Hi. I don't know if you'll see this. If you don't, that's alright too. I randomly stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for sharing your story. It's morale-boosting. And I'll even say intimidating to me at the same time. But that timidness stems from admiration too. You're well versed, accomplished, possess the intellectual capability I wish I had sometimes, and are living the type of path that I once wished I had. I'm one of those folks who find science topics cool even though I'm not good at it, don't understand or grasp many science & math concepts, and have no intention of going into a STEM career. As strange as that might sound. I'm just a curious layman watching into the bubble from the outside. And yes, I know that hard work and dedication plays a big role in it too. And we could all achieve great things if we put our minds to it. But it goes to show too that one's upbringing/milieu plays a large part in how well one might thrive. For one, like someone just mentioned, having supportive parents can make a difference. And how lucky you are to have had that; supportive parents who had shared interests and involved you into something from an early age. I never had that as a child. I struggled a bit more than my peers. I always fell behind. I struggle with dyscalculia and host of other things. I was on an IEP throughout most of my academic career. Parents are immigrants who were unfamiliar with the U.S. school system & curriculums. They aren't bad parents though. We just didn't have access and knowledge of what resources to use. I sometimes can't help but imagine how I'd turn out today had things been handled better and if I was brought up differently. I've also been put down and dealt with some toxic teachers and classmates growing up. Even to this day, at age 32, I still feel behind and stunted sometimes. It feels wasteful... But I make do of what I have. Anyways, I'm sorry for my nonsensical ramble. I'll see myself out. Thank you again for sharing your story. Stay humble. Keep doing what you do and keep striving and being an inspiration to others.

Hi! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You're totally right. I got lucky in many things - like you mentioned, the amazing family. I'm healthy. In some other things, maybe I got unlucky - I was jealous of my college peers who didn't have to take out student loans and work at night. We all are dealt a certain hand. And there's always someone to compare to. I met a friend for dinner last week who is about to sell his company and I just thought "ugh, I'm so behind. I should have done this and that. I wish x and y had/hadn't happened. I made a bad decision." I think of that supermodel I follow on Instagram who I think is AMAZING and is my gym inspo and she still filters her photos, you know? But what can we do? I think all of us sometimes wish for what we don't have. I'm trying out writing a gratitude journal this year. I thought it was so silly, but maybe it will rewire me a bit. Lots of life ahead. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." - Gandalf

Which goes to show that if you want to succeed in any STEM field, you need all this along with a little bit of luck. Very often, I feel burnt out, stupid and question my life decisions. If you're like me and you're going through the same, you're not alone. While stories like this are meant to motivate, it just goes to show how lacking some people like me are for pursuing a career in STEM/academia.

An amazing story, wow, and so inspirational as well. I did a physics degree, I got a master's in it and I think also was attracted to it because my dad was a physics teacher. I was just enthused so much growing up and intrigued. I'm a bit older than you so space was the big thing at the time and computer science was still quite new, in the 90s. I love the past of your story about writing to professors and applying for jobs on a research team, I wish I'd done that, I wish at the time I'd known it was even possible. Maybe that's one thing students should be made more aware of, what is possible. When I graduated I'm not sure I thought that there weren't jobs of there. You're right though in that the jobs actually using the physics that I'd learnt were sparse, mainly in the defence industry and I just didn't want to go into that industry, I didn't want to stay and do a PhD and didn't want to teach, but I knew the skills are had were attractive to potential employers. You're so right that physics gives you a base to quickly learn new things and apply them, also to question and try to look at problems from lots of different angles. I ended up working with databases and then into software, well a mixture of both really. Looking back I too wish that I'd taken more computing modules, but what I did have me a taste for more, and I was even more enthused when working on a group project trying to build a basic speech recognition system. That failed and didn't come to anything, but it did make me want to pursue a career in IT. The whole quantum computing revolution seems amazing and if I were coming up to going to university or even coming up to graduating I think I'd be very interested in this area as well. Привет, Anastasia - I feel that you're my *"long-lost twin"!* My own academic path has been very non-linear, to put it mildly... and roamed across math, cs, machine learning, molecular biology... with a longstanding deep love of physics - not pursued professionally, notwithstanding a job at Lawrence Berkeley Lab when I was in grad school - but always there... With great effort, I've been _resisting the temptation_ to jump into quantum computing, never mind 2 job applications to Rigetti, to focus on my other research areas (in Knowledge Representation, in "ML meets neurocomputing", and in quantitative modeling of biological systems)... But I'm currently taking a stroll thru what may be the best book ever on Mathematical Physics (Peter Szekeres), in anticipation of taking my foot off the brake for quantum computing! And, likewise, I interrupted graduate school, and I started a company at one point, haha Lately, I've been mostly working in Pharma, and more specifically in the Healthy Longevity field. A lot of good wisdom in the advice you dispense in your video! I love Russian, btw, and it's next on my to-study list... for now focusing on German, while trying to keep up my French and Brazilian Portuguese. *Yes, I'm crazy... we're both crazy* :) I best describe myself as a "POLYMATH" - a description that seems to match you, too, to a T... Inspiring, I'm a physics too :-) . I dropped out of my PhD after I was not able to work/find a lab to finish my work after my funds dried up, thinking about next step too although I'm 37, now need a job though, will see.

@@Anastasia-Marchenkova I'm thinking I need to learn code or maybe get into science communication so maybe KZbin but it takes time. I need to learn a lot more software though to get into data science. Maybe later I can give it another try. How much time do you give to all the different avenues you are working on?

Hey, hope you are doing good now. Leaving a phd in mid a courageous step… i am happy to see people who got clarity to take decisions for themselves instead of just blindly following the league.❤

Hey Anastasia. Thanks for sharing your story and congratulations for maintaining this channel! I would like to peek a little into your experience: What is the best quantum/hybrid platform/library/language for SAT solving? And what is the current limit, in terms of number of variables, it could actually solve? (I hope you do not mind the question, you probably know it from the top of your mind and I am overwhelmed in the search for the answer as a new comer.)

I was never worried that I won't be able to find a job after a physics undergrad. I signed a perma contract with Intel while I was still in my final year.

@@Anastasia-Marchenkova I suppose a lot of people in physics are Introverts who struggle to perform well during job interviews. Many of my friends are extremely intelligent and capable but they lack the confidence and human interaction skills to convince the companies to hire them.

Your story is super inspiring. I just completed my high school and I'm searching for colleges. I came across quantum computing when I was in my first year and it really interested me.Could you please assist me of which field I have to choose for studying quantum computing as the colleges I searched do not have quantum computing as a degree. It's either Engineering Physics or Computer science engineering these are my options right now and I really wanna get into quantum computing. Please help . Thankyou😊

Curious if you've ever heard of the use of monoatomic elements in quantum computing, like monoatomic iridium or gold. They are considered exotic matter and will be the future.
