ANATOLY KARPOV: BORN TO WIN // Episode five: Korchnoi, an opponent you got to earn

Anatoly Karpov is an extremely lucky man. Throughout his outstanding chess career, he was lucky more than once. Including on his opponent... His antagonist in life and on the board for many years was the impossible Viktor Korchnoi.
If you can imagine two people and destinies that are as different as it gets, it is Viktor Lvovich and Anatoly Evgenievich. A hard worker who made himself an "ass" (Spassky informally called "Korchnyak"), an incredibly fanatical worker on chess on the one hand, and Karpov ... to whom, looking from the outside, everything was given without the slightest difficulty! They had only one thing in common - both were simply obsessed with the thirst for victory and success!
Before the Interzonal in 1973, which was to be held in Leningrad, Karpov's patron Tupikin decided to conduct a closed "survey" among his friends, asking them who they thought would face Fischer? The answers produced different names: Karpov himself, according to him, wrote "Petrosian", as he believed that the former World Champion had the most chances. And Korchnoi's note read: "Korchnoi and Karpov Interzonal will win the Interzonal in Leningrad. The final match of the Candidates shall be Korchnoi - Karpov. Its winner: Korchnoi." Well, almost...

Again, I cannot thank you enough for these marvellous videos, and for the subtitles without which I would miss a great deal! On a point of information - the game which Karpov describes at 34:36 was not played at the Alekhine Memorial tournament, but in the 41st USSR Championship, in 1973.

Fantastic series! Karpov has gotten a lot of bad press due to both Korchnois and Kasparovs dissing of him but he really is a nice guy. Maybe more so than both of the aforementioned!
