We saw sharp Karpov in Linares'94 - end of his peak - and it was "Beast mode Karpov"

Chessmetrics rated Karpov's performance at Linares as 2899 [basically 2900]. When computer chess programs started playing stronger than humans to me they looked like a refined "Karpovian" style.

@@asherasator Yep, looking for that small advantage or the destruction for any major inaccuracy.

@@ElComendante1928 Exactly. That's why the computer program preferred the Rook at D1 over H3. Karpov showed some of the most perfect human chess, even with the mistakes, blunders and inaccuracies. Some of Karpov's greatest games he lost or drew, he had positional superiority! A computer in those positions would've completely taken it home to a win. Even Kasparov said in a serious game that was drawn, "Karpov had a 75% win".

We miss Karpov and Kramnik.

Karpov was probably the stronger player but Kasparov had youth and a phenomenal work ethic on his side. If their age gap had been reversed, it would be no contest. Meanwhile, Kramnik continues to morph into Dvoretsky, an excellent analyst, if a lttle dry according to current tastes.

Wow that was some recap. Amazing! Interesting to see Karpov and Kasparov played the chicken game against each other. Karpov forcing Kasparov to play defencivly and Kasparov forcing Karpov to play offencevly. Probably Karpov thought thats Kaspy would just shelter as long as possible and then crack or he thought that Kaspy would make a rush impolsive move to break out and Karp would capilise on that. But it was Kaspy that won the mind battel and played some remarceble defencive moves before he could exell in the new dynamic possision.

I wonder if Karpov and Kasparov were closer in age what would have happened. Karpov clearly understands better chess than Kasparov, but kasparov plays much more aggressive.

That is why he had a lifetime score of -5 over 150 games despite his clear better understanding? Oh and by this game 72 game- he was only one ahead with his clearly better understanding.

Kramnik very insightful here - not the curmudgeon who claims everyone who beats him is a cheater.
