Shortly before 8am on 7th December 1941 the residents of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu were jolted awake by explosions as Japanese aircraft roared overhead. Unknown to them, a huge aircraft carrier strike force had approached from the north and in two waves would bomb airfields and warships across the Island and at Anchor in the major naval base at Pearl Harbor. By the time it was over, just two hours later, more than 2400 men lay dead, the Harbor was engulfed in flames, and for the Americans at least, WW2 had begun. This is that story.

The US knew they were going to get attacked, but this was the best way to get America itself into the war. They just sacrificed these men

In retrospect, these ships were already obselete as an effective fighting force, as the Japanese proved with their attack.

When you read about what happened before the attack you'll learn that it was the enlisted men who did everything right and the officers who made all the mistakes.

It did but we took it down after a couple of days due to some tightening up of the visuals and extra segments added in that we thought made the story more understandable.

Great video. Small nitpick, the quality/soundlevel of the commentary varies at times, little annoying at times. No big deal, doesnt distract from the great video, but wanted to give you some feedback.

Oh I have a named ww2 marine helmet with emblem to a Sgt stationed at Ewa during the attack. I obtained it from him along with all his paperwork, uniforms before he passed in 1982. He was a good friend of my dad.

Excellent documentary. As always, I appreciate the maps and imagery that you use. As a visual learner, they were especially helpful for helping me learn more about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I hadn't seen all of the raw footage before either. I also appreciate being able to learn about Dorie Miller and Peter Tomich. Both were brave and selfless and courageous. Also, as always, great narration by Dan. Keep up the nice work.

As an Australian, with some years on the clock, I find this such a sobering event to watch & listen about. I am lost for words to even begin to describe the sorrow that I feel for those killed & injured and their families, and for the USA as a whole. It is just so tragic.

Despite being recommended by several Naval officers and congressmen for the Congressional Medal of Honor, Doris Miller was awarded the Navy Cross, because the Sec of the Navy at the time refused to sign off on the award of the MoH to a black serviceman.

InB4 someone says they should have gone ahead with the third wave, which was a) not planned, b) could not have done much because the fuel storage was NOT nearly as vulnerable as Nimitz said it was, and c) was logically impossible for the Japanese to pull off.

It baffles me how Dorris Miller only gets a Navy Cross for all that he did and being one of the last to leave west virginia helping to remove wounded!! Yet two officers doing there job are killed and given medals of honour for doing nothing more then what is expected of a Naval officer!!

Peter Tomich was Croat from Prolog, what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina. He spoke Serbo-Croatian not German. If you don’t wanna call him American after all he did, at least don’t insult him by calling him Austrian.
